Skiing: From Reggio Emilia is it easy to reach the local Ski Resort of Febbio (its around 60km drive)

Febbio 2000 claims its position as the highest balcony on the Apennines. With its 3 chair lifts which climb up to an altitude of 2063 metres, Febbio 2000 is the highest winter sports resort in the northern Apennines. It offers skiers 12 kilometres of downhill slopes, which are constantly levelled and covered with artificial snow at a lower altitude. It is equipped with modern ski-lift systems. Special slopes for snowboard enthusiasts are provided in Febbio 2000 and also the higher part of the ski resort, which offers fantastic off-piste areas with natural ravines. Even for good skiers and lovers of downhill skiing, the area offers various possibilities for excursions and cross country ski of all levels and refuges at a high altitude. How to get there: take the provincial road 9 from Villa Minozzo towards Civago. When you reach Asta take the provincial road 99 towards Febbio.

Canossa and the Great lands of Matilda: Remembering the great Countess Matilda

The Apennine hills above Reggio Emilia are like a balcony provided by mother nature for looking out over the plain below and across as far as the Alps on clear days. They had an important role during the Middle Ages and still attract visitors today. Despite the ravages of time, the castles that represented the heart of the ancient lands ruled over by Matilda still hold the nostalgic appeal of the period straddling the eleventh and the twelfth centuries when the schemes of European politics unfolded among these woods and ravines and the heroes of the tales were Popes and Emperors.

Nowadays, what remains of these castles has been ravaged by the passing years yet they still hold great appeal and tell of serious events that unfolded in the past provided your imagination can stretch to see the fluttering of the flags, the beacons and the dispatch riders galloping to and fro.

Pietra Di Bismantova: The points of interest also include thePietra di Bismantovawith its massive, rocky cliff face soaring 1047 metres above sea level. A large expanse of fields stretches over the top of this flat mountain, covering an area of 12 hectares, and are surrounded by hornbeams and hazelnut trees. The Pietra di Bismantova and its surroundings is part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park and is a very interesting site for both archaeologists and naturists.

The highest reaches of the Apennine Mountains of Reggio Emilia also bear traces of ancient glaciers, now extinct. During the ice age of the Quaternary period of the Ice Age (the last one was 10,000 years ago), several glaciers formed in the mountains above Reggio Emilia. As they slowly made their way downhill, the debris they took along with them eroded the terrain below. Traces of their passage can be seen in the form of huge amphitheatres, hewn out of the mountain sides in the Ozola valley at Lama di Mezzo or at the source of the river.

Lovely Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a week in Reggio Emilia in this lovely apartment.

Sarah was there to meet us and was delightful and welcoming.

There was a problem with the internet but Sarah came to the flat on the first day and solved it -we had no problems after that.

The flat is large and clean with more than enough room for 4. Big bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen is very well equipped but be careful not to put too many appliances on at once!

The flat is in a great position -only 5 minutes walk to the centre. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep and a CoOp 2 minutes walk away.

We visited Parma and Modena by train - very easy. A highlight was the Ferrari Museum in Modena and a visit to a Balsamic vinegar producer.

I would thoroughly recommend staying here.

Wonderful flat and great location

  • 4 of 5

It would be hard d to find fault with this flat. And I would have given it 5 stars but for the fact that the internet/wifi never worked. We arrived on a Monday and immediately called the problem to Sarah's attention. Despite being told to try unplugging and unplugging the modem it did not work. On the third day we were told someone would come. No one did nor did they on the 4 rh or 5th day. Then it was the weekend and no hope of getting the problem resolved. It really was quite frustrating although we did eventually find a nice cafe which had wifi. By all accounts, Sarah tried to rectify the problem but after reading a review posted several months before we arrived ( and after we had booked) I was surprised it was not working when we arrived.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry about this and the inconvenience it caused. I tried my best with the Italian phone company to rectify this problem and everyday they assured me it was going to be working and now at last they have been out to check to see what the problem was and all is working now fine. Apart from that I hope you enjoyed your stay.

Nice apartment; terrible parking and poor customer service

  • 2 of 5

The apartment was beautifully renovated with high end appliances and fixtures. It has 2 large bedrooms and 2 beautiful, large bathrooms. It is very clean. Central location convenient for walking to shops and restaurants but the parking situation is horrible. WiFi did not work and poor response from owner who promised to correct the internet situation and provide a parking pass but never showed up or even called. Not that a parking pass would help; there is simply nowhere to park especially on busy market days and evenings. No hot water in 1 bathroom on 1 day.

If you want a clean, central location and plan to walk to shops and restaurants in Reggio Emilia this is great. If you have a car or need internet access or prompt response from owner, look for another place.

12 good days in Reggio Emilia

  • 5 of 5

Spacious well-equipped clean and tidy apartment, central location, good restaurants nearby and a wonderful gelateria, two decent grocery stores in neighbourhood.

We would stay there again and would recommend it to others.

An absolutely beautiful flat in a gem of a city. Sarah's help and support prior to and during my stay was first rate. Was there in mid-November for a week long International Study Program at the Loris Malaguzzi Centre exploring the Reggio approach to early childhood education. Though I stayed there on my own, the flat would be ideal for a team visiting the centre from a school or a school district as it is a lovely 25 minute walk through the town to the centre. Amenities are steps away - restaurants, cafes, and a super market only steps outside the door of the flat.

Mille grazie!

Comfort, luxury, and location

  • 5 of 5

Sarah's house was the perfect place for our stay in Reggio Emelia. The quiet setting and well appointed rooms made us want to stay inside and enjoy the ambiance that Sarah has created. There was so much room for the two of us that we wished we had brought friends along. But when we were ready to explore we didn't need to go far. It was close to all the sights within the city and an easy walk to the train station for further exploration. This house made our week in Reggio the highlight of our month long Italian vacation.
