Skiing: From Reggio Emilia is it easy to reach the local Ski Resort of Febbio (its around 60km drive)
Febbio 2000 claims its position as the highest balcony on the Apennines. With its 3 chair lifts which climb up to an altitude of 2063 metres, Febbio 2000 is the highest winter sports resort in the northern Apennines. It offers skiers 12 kilometres of downhill slopes, which are constantly levelled and covered with artificial snow at a lower altitude. It is equipped with modern ski-lift systems. Special slopes for snowboard enthusiasts are provided in Febbio 2000 and also the higher part of the ski resort, which offers fantastic off-piste areas with natural ravines. Even for good skiers and lovers of downhill skiing, the area offers various possibilities for excursions and cross country ski of all levels and refuges at a high altitude. How to get there: take the provincial road 9 from Villa Minozzo towards Civago. When you reach Asta take the provincial road 99 towards Febbio.
Canossa and the Great lands of Matilda: Remembering the great Countess Matilda
The Apennine hills above Reggio Emilia are like a balcony provided by mother nature for looking out over the plain below and across as far as the Alps on clear days. They had an important role during the Middle Ages and still attract visitors today. Despite the ravages of time, the castles that represented the heart of the ancient lands ruled over by Matilda still hold the nostalgic appeal of the period straddling the eleventh and the twelfth centuries when the schemes of European politics unfolded among these woods and ravines and the heroes of the tales were Popes and Emperors.
Nowadays, what remains of these castles has been ravaged by the passing years yet they still hold great appeal and tell of serious events that unfolded in the past provided your imagination can stretch to see the fluttering of the flags, the beacons and the dispatch riders galloping to and fro.
Pietra Di Bismantova: The points of interest also include thePietra di Bismantovawith its massive, rocky cliff face soaring 1047 metres above sea level. A large expanse of fields stretches over the top of this flat mountain, covering an area of 12 hectares, and are surrounded by hornbeams and hazelnut trees. The Pietra di Bismantova and its surroundings is part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park and is a very interesting site for both archaeologists and naturists.
The highest reaches of the Apennine Mountains of Reggio Emilia also bear traces of ancient glaciers, now extinct. During the ice age of the Quaternary period of the Ice Age (the last one was 10,000 years ago), several glaciers formed in the mountains above Reggio Emilia. As they slowly made their way downhill, the debris they took along with them eroded the terrain below. Traces of their passage can be seen in the form of huge amphitheatres, hewn out of the mountain sides in the Ozola valley at Lama di Mezzo or at the source of the river.
