About Diana Smith

We bought Fairtide in 2011 as a family gathering place for grandparents, children, and grandchildren. Our family has been coming to the Vineyard since 1946, so it already felt like home to us.

Diana Smith purchased this house in 2011

Why Diana Smith chose Martha's Vineyard

We have always loved historic houses, and we feel this house has great presence and character. It was built in 1905 by Capt. George Eldridge who made his fame with the Eldridge tide tables, still a family run business making charts used by sailors today for navigation. It is only a few houses up from the heart of Vineyard Haven, but with a double lot it has a feeling of spaciousness, privacy and open sky in the back yard.

What makes this house unique

This house has the character of an old Captain's house with the modern convenience of a new kitchen. We like being able to walk to the ferry, restaurants, shopping, the town pier, and the library, while enjoying the peaceful surrounds of a large property.

Perfect! Perfect! Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Imagine a beautiful home, fully equipped with EVERYTHING you could ever need, in a lovely quiet neighborhood, with a spacious yard, within a couple blocks of shops, the ferry...Diana was the perfect hostess from flowers on the diningroom table to ketchup in the fridge! We were THRILLED to have found such a lovely place and so PLEASED with how attentive Diana was to all of our pre-stay questions. Such charm!

We loved it! Wish we never had to leave!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here - right on main street of town - last summer for 6 weeks. It was everything we could want - spacious - lots of bedrooms and baths, charming, totally equipped with everything and anything we could imagine, historic exterior, updated interior, great dining area and patio, beautiful yard. It is close to town but quiet and peaceful, easy access to beach and restaurants - and one block to outstanding lobster rolls every Friday! Ideal, attentive owner, responsive to everything, always accommodating. We would stay there year after year but we were there last summer while waiting for our own home to be built. We recommend this home enthusiastically. Go and have a great time! We predict you will want to come back.

Midway KY

Sisters and their families

  • 5 of 5

My sisters and I have been coming to the Vineyard for the last 19 years. We have stayed mainly in West Tis and Lambert's Cove, so we decided to venture out and try Vineyard Haven for two reasons. We had two young adults ages 18 and 15 who we felt could benefit from being in town where there was plenty to do, and there was the possibility that our three college students would possibly be joining us.

Fairtide, 172 Main, filled the bill. The property was exactly as described and the pictures although realistic did not do this place justice. The living room, dining area, and TV rooms had more than enough space to accommodate all of us. We found more than enough towels, an abundance of kitchen ware, and plenty of off street parking. My sister also liked the extra hooks and towel racks in the bathroom. I must mention that offering a jeep for extra transport was definitely a selling feature. Since three of us flew in from KY we loved the idea of coming and going as we pleased and not having to rely on others. It was great to be able to send one group to the beach while the stragglers readied themselves. We did visit Owen Park (beach two blocks away) which was fantastic for those members who wanted to hit the beach more than once. We also took in Tashmoo beach about a five minute drive because of the easy access from the house.

We found the rooms to all be clean and Diana provided a vacuum, broom, rags etc. for any little mishap. Instructions for recycling and trash pick up also were explicit.

I had the responsibility for finding a place to stay and Diana was extremely helpful in answering all my questions before and after I signed the contract.

I would definitely recommend this property for all the reasons I mentioned and others such as access to Stop'n Shop, the library, walking distance to sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Great for our teens.

We used the services of Bob's Pizza, ate breakfast at The Cave, bought newspapers at Leslie's pharmacy, took out frozen yogurt at Tisberry and took more than one walk to the lighthouse (1.6mi. or 3.2 since you have to come back). Great way to see a little of Main Street.

My husband and I also bought two week memberships at the Mansion Health Club. (corner of Beach and Main) The prices for the use of the facilities was appropriate and offered numerous classes which were included. It was about a seven minute walk from the house.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay although too short!

Owner's Response: We are happy to have had such great guests who kept the house in perfect order, went out of their way to take care of the house and car, and even ironed a table cloth!
