Please note that the Ginger Farm is an ongoing farm in development. A workshop is currently being built with a future farm dwelling and a barn is planned in the future.
Also, occasionally we have farm workers living in a unit below the house, whom you will hardly notice to help on the farm.
Our future goals are a Nursey, farm shop, eco tours and farm weddings. We want to help locals with developing their own backyard gardens. We are a certified Blue Zone farm.
If you would like an up to date photo of the back of farm of what is in progress, please inquire.
Kahiwa & Deanna
The Ginger farm is home to Waimea’s famous Cherry Blossom festival. During this time our home is opened up for a Japanese Home Tour, tea tasting, and Japanese craft making. For the remainder of the year we open up our home for guests to rent.
I have 3 miniature goats and two Kune Kune pigs that you get to feed and pet during your stay.
We are located five minutes from Waimea town and only 15 minutes from some of the most pristine beaches on the island, Hapuna and Puako. The house is on a three acre farm overlooking a babbling steam with an avocado tree and a panoramic view of Mauna Kea. Just down the road every Tuesday and Friday is a local farmer’s market where the freshest fruits and vegetables can be found. Another farmer’s market can also be found one block away only on Saturdays.
With temperatures on average a bit cooler compared to the rest of the Island, our home has a fireplace that allows for a warm and comfortable atmosphere.
In addition to the best farmer’s markets, hikes, and beaches minutes away, you will easily reach other exciting destinations. Kona and Hilo are both an hour’s drive away and the entrance on Saddle Road for the 'Mauna Kea Summit' is 30 minutes away. Another 30 minutes away is Honokaa Village leading you to Waipio Valley, and 45 minutes away is Pololu Valley in Hawi. From Hilo it's only 26 more miles to Volcano park.
The town of Wiamea has plenty to offer with its art galleries, boutiques, Parker Ranch, spas, golf, playgrounds, astronomy at the KECK observatory, the Anna Ranch Museum, and a great selection of local restaurants. As stated by one restaurant critic 'For a town of 8,500, little Waimea is turning into a culinary mecca. That may have something to do with the fact that it sits amid some of the state's best farms and ranches. Waimea is all about locally sourced food.' Just see for yourself and visit one of our many farmer's markets.

About Deanna Olivier
Welcome to the Ginger Farm. Deanna, the owner restored this 1938 farm house who is an interior designer. The name Ginger Farm came to the owners when smelling all the glorious wild ginger flowers on the 3 acres. The ginger farm is a work in progress and soon edible ginger will be planted to replace the current wild variety. The owners have many plans for their farm which they hope will be a place for all the community to enjoy in the future.
Deanna Olivier purchased this Farmhouse in 2008
Why Deanna Olivier chose Kamuela
Waimea is the loveliest spot on the island. The Ginger Farm is in the the center of it all.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
This is also a perfect location for mountain bikers, triathlon trainers, and any type of sports or science enthusiast. Bikes can be delivered to our home. We also recommend a stroll down the beautiful and fragrant Mudlane located just five minutes from our house.

Beautiful home base in Waimea
We enjoyed the the beautiful furnishings and views of Mauna Kea from this home. Waimea was a great location from which to explore the Kohala Coast and North Kohala, and I really liked the climate of high-elevation Waimea. There is a very friendly cat on site, and of course the three goats and two pigs were a big hit with my 11-year-old daughter! Be prepared to get muddy when you feed them! The only downside to this property is the relatively close proximity to the road - you can't see the cars passing by as there are banana trees screening the road, but the traffic is noticeable on the deck. We did however get used to this quickly, and the noise of passing cars certainly did not prevent us from sleeping or otherwise enjoying our stay. A beautiful farm experience!
Lovely property with a great deck. Very peaceful.
Very interesting house on a growing farm next to the highway
I had the impression from the Google map that the house was farther away from the highway than it was. It is, as the owner said in response to a previous review, about 30 feet away. With all the doors and windows closed I didn't find the noise very distracting. But we did find conversation on the lanai difficult at times. I live in a quiet suburb. Perhaps folks who live in a city might be used to constant background noise. I'm not.
Otherwise our stay was good. The house was comfortable and dramatically Japanese down to the smallest detail. The farm is a work in progress. We enjoyed communing with the kuny kuny pigs and the goats and Fee Fee the cat. Deanna the owner was there to greet us and show us around. It's close in to Waimea and not far from the coast. Lots of positives.
I have to say though that if I return to the Waimea area I'll look for somewhere else to stay. Somewhere farther from the highway.
Delightful and unique experience
Beautiful home and property close to Waimea stores/restaurants as well as Kohala beaches. There was some road noise during the day, but it was fairly quiet at night. The home is beautifully decorated. The owner lives at the house when it is not rented out. This means that the kitchen is really well stocked but there is somewhat limited space to put things away in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Be prepared to get a little muddy taking care of the pigs and goats every day. The owner was very responsive and helpful. We had a wonderful stay.
Very pleasant property but disappointing in that it is just feet from a road with heavy traffic
Very pleasant property but feet from a road with major traffic.
Peaceful house in a great location
We loved our stay at the Zen House. The house itself is gorgeous, with Japanese decor and comfy beds and furniture. It was clean and comfortable inside, with a very well equipped kitchen and two bathrooms, and the yard was equally beautiful with a garden, fruit trees and walking trails. The animals (pigs, goats and cat) were a sweet bonus. Our hosts were very understanding when we needed to leave the accommodations a day early (and in a mere 20 minutes) because of a travel snafu. This place has no deficits. Waimea is a little cooler and wetter than communities on the west side of the Big Island, but the town itself (which has several great local restaurants) is located in an ideal spot for an hourlong car ride to Mauna Kea, the Northern East coast of the Island, and the Kona airport. Thank you so much for making the Zen House available to guests.
