About Roger

I grew up in Southern California and as a kid always enjoyed vacationing in the mountains with my family. The mountains has always be a place of fond childhood memories of my family and the times we spent together. Eleven years ago I got the opportunity to work here in Big Bear Lake. I clearly remember the first day I drove up. I was amazed that in just a short drive I was in a whole new place of beautiful scenery and clean pine-scented air. Shortly afterwards I discovered that Big Bear Lake is a four-season resort with so much to do. It opened the door to discover new things to do with my family. Now we mountain bike and hike together. The kids enjoy snowboarding and we go boating with family. This is a great place to do alot or if you prefer, relax and do nothing at all. The mountains are a great place to get away and build memories with the ones you love. We hope you come and enjoy Big Bear Lake and stay at our wonderful home in lower Moonridge.

Roger purchased this house in 2012

Why Roger chose Moonridge

There are many nice areas in Big Bear Lake, each with their own unique qualities. We chose lower Moonridge because of the abundance of pine and oak trees that cluster around the homes in the neighborhood. The neighborhood is a quiet and well kept area. It is just a few blocks from Bear Mountain Ski Resort, Moonridge Zoo and the golf course. It is a great place to enjoy a peaceful getaway when you want to relax and recharge your batteries. It's also a great place for the active vacationer. There are plenty of things to do at the house or at the many seasonal resort spots Big Bear has to offer.

What makes this house unique

When you stay at our place you will know why we bought this home. It is full of all sorts of unique features. The beautiful wood walls and ceilings give way to big open skylights. Through the skylights you can see the giant pine trees that surround the house. It has two wood fireplaces and central heating to get cozy on those cool nights. The neighborhood is quiet and in a perfect location away from all the hustle. It is only a short distance away from all the recreational actvities and events that Big Bear Lake has to offer. When you leave you will want to come back.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Roger, we did enjoy your home and look forward to staying there in the future.

Owner's Response: Hello Dawn, Thank you for your Five Star Review! It is always a worry when we rent out our home to strangers. We never know if they will be appreciative or take care of our home. You have on both occasions. We want to especially say that we appreciate you coming back. You are excellent guests, we hope you continue to come back. Sincerely, Roger

Initially the place appeared nice. Our second night there, around nine, an alarm began to chirp sporadically. I thought it might be a fire alarm that may have a battery that was weak. After investigating further, I discovered that it was actually a carbon monoxide detector that we found placed on a TV stand behind the TV and all of its accessories about 3-4 feet from the fireplace which had been in use throughout the evening. The chirping continued even though several attempts were then made to reset the device once it was found. After trying to contact the owner with no luck initially, I contacted the Fire Department and was directed to evacuate the structure until they arrived and were able to determine if it was safe to inhabit. I awoke all of the children in the house (ages 3 and 5) then sent them and the rest of my family out into the rain for about 45 minutes. The FD got there took some air samples and found a miniscule amount of CO coming from the fireplace and nothing else. The event encompassed nearly three hours. Later when we were able to talk to Rodger he offered us a late check out at 1:00 pm vice 11:00 the usual time. On check out day we were tired and left at 11:00 anyway. I sent Rodger a cordial email explaining what had happened and asked that he consider refunding us the fees incurred for the evening of the mishap. I suggested that maybe right next to the fireplace wasn't the best place for the CO detector and in fact the manual for his specific model substantiates this. His response was condescending, rude and combative. He accused me of not taking advantage of the late check out just so I could try to gauge him for the money I had mentioned. He also threatened to deduct from my deposit the cost of a video game which we recognized to be broken when we arrived and said that the reason the alarm went off was because we burned cheap pine wood. Rodger places a lot of emphasis in advertising his game room in which many of the games were poor condition. There were other issues in the house, the Jacuzzi water was filthy, only a few of the remotes had batteries among other things. The owner was offensive and potentially dishonest. I do not recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: Not sure what Maria means? I returned their full deposit back, a military discount and I offered them a late checkout. On their second to last night there was a Strong Wind Advisory. They started a fire in the fireplace burning magazines that caused a lot of smoke. Their first text was at 10:18 PM to say the CO monitor is chirping. Their next text was at 10:56 PM and they said fire department left and told them the strong winds caused a down draft and brought smoke inside, we are good now." I called them right away and they said, the FD checked the CO monitor was good and there was no CO in the house. "They were all good and everything was fine". For their half-hour of inconvenience I offered them a late checkout. They did not accept my offer and then sent me a lengthy letter saying quote, "My family and I had a very pleasant time during our stay at Rodger's House. The residence was clean, well maintained and nicely equipped." He then went into long narrative of how the CO monitor was chirping and that it was not in the best location. I have the manual to the CO monitor in the Welcome Booklet that I asked them to read when they check-in. In it, it recommends exactly where ours is placed (7feet from the fireplace)and what to do if it chirps; open windows. He said, "I am requesting a full reimbursement for rental fees incurred for Saturday, 11 February 2017." He did not want my offer of a late check-out. He got his full deposit back even though his family broke in half the Ms PacMan arcade game and broke the control panel to the air hockey table. I told him I personally emptied and filled hot tub the day they arrived. I explained that the hard water in Big Bear can appear cloudy when you fill the hot tub.

Terrific rental property

  • 5 of 5

We had a truly wonderful stay here. The house was comfortable and clean, and I was truly grateful for the game room and hot tub -- our teens were very happy! We definitely hope to stay here again in the future.

Roger was responsive to our questions, and the house was exactly like the listing described. We had three adults and five kids in our party, and the layout worked well, providing plenty of space for everyone.

Great- as described!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time. The driveway was paved and ready for us and the house was clean! The house provided more then enough room for a big group of people to be comfortable and the jacuzzi was great for relaxing after snowboarding. For those of use that don't participate in snow sports the house is actually close enough to walk to the zoo (and snow summit :). Kitchen was stocked with the basics and a ton of dishes. We would stay again.
