About Sam Dyer

As fate would have it, Sam and Stephanie first met as neighbors in Southeast Portland. Sam, from rural Wisconsin with a degree in film and photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, met Stephanie who was about to embark on a design career in 2003. With a passion for music, architecture, and the arts, the pair sought to create a home for themselves in the dynamic city of Portland. Eager to start their lives together and willing to invest sweat equity, Stephanie and Sam purchased the main house at 705 North Humboldt Street in fixer condition before tying the knot in 2005. After a comprehensive DIY renovation and the birth of their first child in 2010, the ever-optimistic couple embarked on yet another project- employing Harding Construction, they demolished what was an unsalvageable garage to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). Stephanie, with her design background, originally envisioned the building to comfortably accommodate her parents and inlaws. It was only in time that the project intentions expanded to accommodate visitors to the city they had come to love- specifically a short-term vacation rental.

Among many personal touches, this project showcases two of Stephanie's product lines: the Topo Collection for Clayhaus Ceramics (the 3D ceramic wall tile used in the kitchen, fireplace surround, and stair risers), and Archipelago Tile- the patterned cement tile flooring installed throughout the first floor and exterior stoops.

Sam Dyer purchased this guest house in 2005

Great getaway place in North Portland

  • 5 of 5

This little house is perfect for a short getaway. It's very clean and perfect for a couple. There are plenty of linens, and the breakfast nook converts to a queen-size sleeping area as well. It's bright and airy, with lots of windows and skylights.

It would have been nice to have had air conditioning during the very hot days (90+ degrees) of August 2017, but the cottage did cool off with all the windows open in the evening.

It's a short walk to restaurants and shops on Mississippi Ave. It takes a bit longer (30+ min) to take public transportation to the trendy Pearl District or Northwest District across the river. But the public transportation is very inexpensive ($5.00 for a day pass).

My suggestion for the owner - put a curtain over the window in the front door. It's a bit unsettling to think that anyone in front of the house can see you walking around inside.

Truly exceptional stay. Loved the clean and well decorated cottage. They were nice and left light on at night so we could see our way. And location is fantastic! Close to coffee shops and restaurants. Loved it!

Just as in the pictures and even better!

  • 5 of 5

Sam and Stephanie, the owners had a last minute cancellation and lucky we snagged this gem. Super clean, and very well maintained, we were very excited when we arrived. Just as good, as the house were the beds and pillows. Our family are picky sleepers and the three of us slept great.

The neighborhood is safe and within walking distance of everything, with some amazing food and coffee choices. Thanks so much for a great first stay in Portland, another city we absolutely love.

Difficult for more than a couple; floor plan not suitable for a second bed

  • 3 of 5

We were a little disappointed with a few things. First our check in time was pushed back an hour without an explanation. The couple doesn't reside at the main house anymore. The biggest difficulty was that the convertible 2nd bed, which is the dining table, is too heavy and bulky to convert each day; therefore, you only had a bed in the living room and no chairs or table to eat breakfast on. Also, the bathroom was located upstairs in the loft so the person in the downstairs had to come upstairs into your room at night. This is really not a good 2nd bedroom option. Also, we only had one morning of coffee in the house, and even though the owners asked is there was anything they could do for us, when I asked about more coffee, they said go to a grocery store. I knew I could do this, but I assumed they it was an item they usually stock, since all of the VRBO's I have stayed at always have coffee and tea for guests. I assume they normally stock this because there was tons of tea and sugar, and an almost empty coffee bag. I am wondering if because they don't live at the main house anymore they aren't checking on the cottage.

Positives: It was cute, clean and in a convenient neighborhood to go to restaurants, shops, etc and an UBER ride to town was very inexpensive.

Perfect cottage for Portland area activiites

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 3 stayed in the cottage in July, 2017 for 4 nights. The bottom level has a convertible bed where our son stayed and we had plenty of room, although we weren't able to benefit from the table/couch as we didn't want to have to redo the bed every night. But we were so busy out sight-seeing each day that it didn't matter. We explored the Portland area and also did day trips to Cannon Beach and Mt. St. Helens. We really enjoyed how many excellent restaurants and breweries were within walking distance of the cottage on Mississippi Ave. It was nice to be able to get back for the evening and not have to mess with the downtown traffic and parking.

The only thing we didn't like about the cottage is that the front door has a large uncovered window, so with our son having to sleep down there we didn't like that someone could walk up and look in through that window. Also, the sheers that are over the other windows are very light so bring eye shades in the summer because it gets very bright very early!

Those minor issues didn't keep us from enjoying our stay. We felt very safe and were very comfortable. The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, etc. The bathroom is nice and having the washer and dryer was wonderful.
