About MARIA KOKKINOU
Hello, I'm Maria! Born and raised in Athens, I manage Porphyra Books, a publishing house. I love living under the shadow of the Acropolis and enjoy receiving guests.
MARIA KOKKINOU purchased this Apartment in 2012
Why MARIA KOKKINOU chose Athens City Centre
Plaka is the most unique place in Athens, in all of Greece. Leaving in a place where the past joins the present in a unique and magical dance is the reason I decided to invest in an old house in Plaka that needed an extended renovation to become what you see in the pictures.
What makes this Apartment unique
Lovely little shops in the neighborhood, some of the best restaurants of the city, great proximity to all major archaeological and historical sites of Athens, a few minutes from most museums. When living in this house you get the true ambiance of the historical center of Athens!

Yes we loved Athens. We enjoyed the Place that we stayed at. The remodel was super cool.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay in Athens. Maria’s place, there in Plaka, was in the busy, exciting center of all the ancient sites. We were able to walk to so many of them. There were great restaurants around which we enjoyed that had fantastic food to fill our bellies . We did have a rough experience with checking in however. We were given the wrong address and the wrong phone number to contact Maria. We messaged Maria and got the corret address. We thought it odd when we found out that she had been home the whole time and never thought to look outside and see that we were there. The next morning she messaged us and said we had to pay an extra $20 euros for late check in. She acted like it was our fault that we had the wrong address and that the phone number that we called was to her office. the address and phone number were sent to us after our reservation was confirmed. Maria’s place was super clean and absolutely beautiful and comfortable. It was nice to have two bathrooms. Overall it was a great experience for us.
Dear mr Mark Wilkox,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
I find the part of your review about me very unfair and I would kindly ask you to delete it.
The reason I kindly ask you that is the following:
The wrong address and phone are a mistake of the platform, not mine. I have asked them to correct it as it has appeared at an unknown to me time. You were the first customers to go into such trouble and I am very sorry for that, still I could not help it as I did not know anything about this wrong detail.
I remember giving you the correct details over e mails but you were standing in front of the house without ringing the bell. Extra charge for late check in is in the description of the property as this is not a hotel offering 24 hours reception service and someone has to be up for your arrival.
I am very sorry for the trouble you had! It was your vacation and I know how special that time is for all of us.
I am happy you enjoyed Athens and appreciated my home despite the unfortunate circumstances at your arrival.
I hope that HomeAway will allow my answer to appear.
All the best,
Eleven Minutes to the Acropolis
If you want to be close to all of the history and sights in Athens you will need to spend your time in Maria’s beautiful house in Plaka. There are so many restaurants within a block on the house it is ridiculous. And shopping is everywhere in the Plaka area. This central location could not be any more ideal than it is. Her home is newly renovated and fabulously spacious. A great place to come back to after many hours out seeing the many sights of Athens. Maria was a great host for our stay. We spoke to her a few times and loved her insights and thoughts on a variety of topics. We went to Rakor, a restaurant recommended by Maria as a real local sport to eat. Delightful food and atmosphere.
We arrived by Metro and walked 10 minutes to the house. Easy walk that helped us get acclimated to our location. You can see the Parthenon from the walk over. Dinner was easy to find and we ate a restaurants only 100 feet from the house. The next morning we were at the Acropolis by 8 AM and beat the crowds to this awe inspiring piece of history. By the time we were leaving the crowds were pouring into the area. We had lunch and headed to Greek Archaeological Museum for the afternoon. We arrived after a 25 minute walk through the bustling Athens streets. Along the way we visited the market filled with fresh meats, fish, vegetable and fruits. What an experience and something not available in the USA that I know of.
Thank you Maria for making our stay so great. If we get back to Athens were will definitely want to stay with you again.
The first floor of this beautiful house whose origins date back to around 800 AD has been recently renovated. Featuring a double bedroom, it is best for two but can sleep up to four people (or a couple and two children) by converting the living room.
With an exceptional skylight and numerous original works of art, this real athenian home will make the difference during your stay in Athens.
The atmosphere is bright and luxurious thanks to a bespoke open-plan kitchen, a large glass panel on the roof and an interior garden. It's all about letting as much natural light in as possible, without ever getting too hot thanks to thick stone walls and a state-of-the art air conditioning system. The finishing of the interior looks splendid, consisting of hand-finished wood, cast iron and genuine Pentelic marble.
The flat is located on 18, Lysiou St, which is by far the most iconic street in the Plaka area: Almost entirely car-free, vibrant and full of wonderful things to explore. Plaka is pretty much an ideal choice for Athens visitors, as the beautiful neighbourhood maintains an old-world glamour while being positioned in the core of Athens' city centre.
