About the Property
Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
The living/dining room has a sofa, easy chairs, dining table with chairs, and coffee and end tables with plenty of lamps, pillows and other amenities to make it feel like a 'home away from home.' There is a woodstove and baseboard heat for any chilly mornings or evenings. A maximum of four guests to a cabin is requested.
The cabin is just steps from Johnson Creek, a major tributary to the South Fork of the Salmon drainage, offering some of the best fly fishing in the Inland Northwest. The East Fork of the South Fork and the South Fork of the Salmon are an easy drive away, and the Middle Fork of the Salmon, along with its fine trout tributaries, Pistol Creek and Indian Creek, can be accessed by hiking and horseback trails or by a short flight from the Johnson Creek Airstrip, just down the road from the ranch cabins. Several air charter companies can provide this air service from Cascade or McCall.
The lush meadows surrounding the cabin can provide feed and accommodation for guest livestock for horseback trail riders wanting direct access from the ranch property to a myriad of trails leading to high-mountain lakes, scenic summits and Wilderness trails leading to the Middle Fork of the Salmon and beyond. There is a small charge and special arrangements can be made for the livestock in corrals or portable fencing provided by the cabin renters.

Year Purchased: 1986
About the owner: Diana, raised in the mid-west and living for many years in Washington, D.C., purchased Wapiti Meadow Ranch to operate it as a guest ranch, pack station and, eventually, a fly fishing lodge. She and husband Barry, a retired backcountry air charter pilot and partner-owner of Bryant Ranch, just down the road, have operated Wapiti Meadow as a full service outfitting business for 25 years. They are going into semi-retirement and renting the cabins that have been the 'homes-away-from-home' for outfitted riders, fishermen, hunters and hikers during previous busy years. Now visitors to the backcountry can enjoy being 'self-guided' from the cabins, exploring the wonders of the wilderness on their own, but with advice from Diana and Barry on the best fishing, riding and hiking spots in their huge 'backyard'. Their experience as Orvis Endorsed Lodge outfitters, Dude Ranch Association members, and residents and recreationists in the area for a life-time can give cabin guests unique advice on their recreational opportunities at their cabin door. The Bryants live adjacent to the rental cabins and are always on hand for consultations and assistance.
Why the Owner Chose Cascade, ID, USA:
The lure of wilderness living, the desire for good company there, and an enterprenerial spirit that couldn't be quenched drew Diana to the Idaho wilds where she met Barry, a fourth generation owner of Bryant Ranch, adjacent to the Johnson Creek Airstrip, just down the road. Diana had experimented with backcountry living by working at Stonebraker Ranch in Chamberlain Basin during her first stays in Idaho, and while at the time she wanted something even more remote than the road-and plane-accessed Johnson Creek Valley, she's grateful now that she settled here with it's good road access to Cascade and McCall and the nearby Johnson Creek Airstrip. During their career here, Diana and Barry have had a riding and Wilderness pack trip business, a hunting outfitting business, a fly fishing lodge business, and a Bed and Breakfast offering, but have streamlined their lives and are now able to offer their cabins as rentals.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The historic log lodge which anchors the property was hand-hewn from timber on the homestead, and the more modern and comfortable cabins replaced other more rustic structures here in the 1970's and have been updated lately. The ranch history is central to Idaho's and Valley County's history, with the original homestead being established during the Thunder Mountain gold rush in the late 1800's, and the Cox family establishing the earliest 'Dude Ranch' in Idaho on the site in the 1920's. Operated from the late 1920's until the 1970's by the Cox family, it was known as the 'Cox Dude Ranch' here in Idaho and far beyond. When Diana purchased the property in the 1980's it had been out of service as a guest facility for 12 or more years. However, the lodge, cabins, barns, fencing and all the necessities for re-establishing it as a 'dude ranch' were still there. It wasn't long before Wapiti Meadow Ranch became known for its hospitality, fine accommodations, and great wilderness sports activities.
