Wonderful as always!!

  • 5 of 5

Once again this home provided my family with the perfect get away. The views are breathtaking and the cottage had everything we needed. We can't wait to come back!

Great central location

  • 4 of 5

Loved being on the beach! View from master suite was wonderful. Kitchen was well stocked. Large dining room table was a plus. Water softener did run low and beeped non stop but the property manager brought salt on same day to correct the annoyance. The front deck was wonderful. Beach chairs were not available but would be a great addition to this property. Would recommend this vacation rental to friends and family.

Nice location but very disappointing accommodations.

  • 2 of 5

The cottage was in a nice location, nestled right off M28 on Lake Superior, however, Google maps could not be used to find this address and directions provided via email were difficult to read. Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was a lock box under a broken lock box that had an "X" on it, which I am assuming didn't work. After retrieving the key, there was a hand-written note informing us that the door lock wouldn't work unless you pulled the key out "a smidge". This was particularly annoying since we arrived late and it was hard to see. A couple of steps that led down to the small area of beach were gone-this could be hazardous for small children and the elderly. In addition to these outside issues, inside the list goes on:

- Absolutely no curtains or shades in any room.

- Electrical shortage in the half-wall between kitchen and living room. Lights would go on/off when bumping the wall.

- Water softener was empty. It was beeping incessantly and water was tinted yellow. We had to go purchase our own drinking water.

- Linens were very musty. We questioned whether or not they were fresh.

- Over the length of 3 days a collection of around 50 gnats, mosquitos, and spiders spontaneously generated in the full bath from an unknown source.

The most shocking and ridiculous issue at this cottage was the list of visitor requirements for staying at the house:

- Garbage containing food items must be frozen and taken out at the end of stay.

- Linens that were slept in must be stripped and washed, and start a second load if time permits. Seriously!?

- All dishes must be washed and put away "where you found them".

- Put out fire before departure...except the house did not have a fire pit!

Checkout time is 10am. All of these tasks are to be completed before departure...and notify them if we leave the property before 10.

Although there are many other smaller inconveniences in the house, I chose to cover only the main problems.

We travel extensively and also own rental properties. We felt that for staying 3 nights, it was not a place that we would recommend nor stay at again.

Where do you live?

Nice setting but house needs a lot of help -- and a new property manager

  • 2 of 5

We rent on services like Home Away a lot so have a point of reference. This house needs a lot of help. Upon arrival lock box didn't work. Had to call for help. Only one key. Key didn't work in front door and we had to walk around to back door, which was very difficult to jimmy open. A hassle every time we got back to house. Major road noise especially when windows are open -- be warned. There are no shades or curtains on a single window in the place including bedrooms. So no privacy or relief from sun at dawn. The full bathroom in the basement has no mirror (try shaving), no bath mat, no soap in shower, busted off towel rack and missing towels. The bed downstairs is an oversized single -- doesn't work for two. Two of three smoke detectors didn't have batteries. Oven was filthy. No duvet covers on any of the quilts, which smelled like last few renters. No place to put clothes in any bedrooms--need small chest of drawers in each. No mirrors in any bedrooms. Dining room light switch broken off though operational. Bedside lamps don't provide enough light -- and are needed on both sides of beds, not just one. No instructions for TVs with multiple remotes and hundreds of channels. WiFi code was scratched on the back of a piece of paper -- not easy to find. Good wifi though. Faulty lamp caused electric to short out wherever plugged in. Water softener ran low on salt and beeped nonstop -- very annoying. No soap for laundry -- yet we were told to start washing linens before leaving. Great potential view of lake but trees are so overgrown you can only see bits of it. Bottom stairs to beach are tumbled down and have no railing so older visitors won't ever see the view or enjoy beach. No beach chairs provided (though there were tons of beach toys for kids). No light on deck so would have to grill in dark. Property manager was so unresponsive that we called owner who came over to assist with electrical issues. I'd get a new manager if it were my place and make a punch list of the many repairs and updates that this place needs to be marketed as a rental. On the plus side nicely equipped kitchen and nice dining area. Someone in charge needs to walk through this place and try to experience it as a renter to see where it's falling short.

Fantastic Location!!!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic Location!! This cottage is located on the best beach on Lake Superior - miles of sandy beach to swim, walk, and kayak on! The view of Lake Superior is gorgeous from the front deck....such a great spot to enjoy your coffee in the morning and watch the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Plenty of bathrooms/bedrooms for a large family, and the big dining room table was a lovely place to gather for breakfast and other meals. The cottage is close to Munising and Pictured Rocks (we rented a pontoon boat to view Pictured Rocks Lakeshore....awesome), the many beautiful waterfalls in the area, and the Brownstone Inn is just around the corner (best whitefish dinners on the planet!). The small but quaint Au Train markets are convenient for gas, ice cream, or quick items, and both make great pasties...yum. A must is a swim in the Au Train river where it empties into Lake Superior.....a lovely wind-swept dune with enough sand and water to keep any kid (or adult) happy.

The cottage does need a bit of TLC; the bathroom window did not open and there are no window treatments on bedroom/bathroom windows (the many trees provide privacy). But these are easily overlooked for the awesome location and the opportunity to vacation on the most spectacular lake on the planet.....Lake Superior!
