About Alison & Brian
We're a close-knit family living in the Midwest that really treasures making loving memories and supporting healthy, wholesome fun.
Alison & Brian purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Alison & Brian chose South Haven Charter Township
We have a large family and extended family. This property allows one or two families to be close together and really share each other's company, the uncrowded beach and magical evenings by the fire pit. Nobody has to jump in a car or go back to a sterile hotel room in the middle of the evening. Family and friends can hang out as late as they want and retire to their bed a few steps away.
What makes this Cottage unique
Dune Cottage is in the shadow of a Lake Michigan dune. There are 2 or 3 routes to the beach, depending on your preferences. Each route is a few 100 yards and varies between walking through the forest, roads and dune. The beaches are not crowded. So you're able to enjoy Lake Michigan on your own terms. The town of South Haven provides golf, restaurants, groceries, boating, movies and antiquing just a few minutes away. This property also boasts a quiet, friendly neighborhood, scenic deck and fire pit (stocked with firewood). Dune Cottage is just a few 100 yards from some of the most private beaches on Lake Michigan. And Van Buren State Park is less than a mile away. We are also about 1/2 a mile the Van Buren Trail. So there are opportunities for an extended nature walk, bike ride or snowmobile ride. So it's pleasant walk to beach.

The house was ok
When we first arived it was a little disappointing. There are (what looks like) abandoned houses all in the area and an eye sore of a trailer across the street and the grass was not cut. Someone did mow the lawn on Saturday before we left the next day on Sunday. The landscape definitely needs some love. When we go into the house, it’s a little dated, but that’s ok, it does have a beach feel to it, which I liked. New appliances which was nice. We tried to use the stove the first night and it wasn’t working. Texted the owners and they came to check the fuse box and was fixed within 20 minutes. She was very prompt with responding to any concerns I had. The house sleeps 8 people but they only had five towels in the bathroom. I did let her know I could not find anymore towels but none where brought to us. They did have plenty of gas for the grill and more than enough fire food for the fire pit. However, they didn’t have enough toilet paper, paper towel, or trash bags. I could have texted her and let know, but I didn’t. The point is, that when a house sleeps 8 people, it should be stocked to accommodate, so maybe they need a new caretaker. There seems to be an issue with the humidity in the house. We would hang towels after showering and the next day they would still be damp. I would suggest a couple dehumidifiers, because the house felt damp. Also, maybe another water heater. After two of us took a shower the water was cold. The path to the dunes is a trail up a dirt road and through the woods, which is a little misleading from the description of the house. We were fine getting to the dunes, and when we got there is was beautiful! It was worth the walk, but if you are older or have young children, I wouldn’t recommend it. Might as well drive a mile down the road to Van Buren state park to Lake Michigan. South haven was fun, the house was about 10 minutes from downtown. They weather wasn’t ideal (which obviously isn’t their fault) but we made the most of it. There is only one window air conditioning unit in the house. It was fine for us because it wasn’t very hot during our stay. If it was hot though, I would suggest another window unit somewhere in the house. Overall, my guests and I had a great time! I think this place has room for improvement and has the potential to be so much better than what it is. I may not stay at this property again, but I would definitely visit south haven again.
Thank you for your feedback. My apologies that your experience was less than stellar. Yes, this is a cottage next to a dune. Yes, except for the main road into the subdivision, we have well-maintained, hard-packed dirt roads. Yes, there's a vintage 1954 mobile home, that's being restored, almost across the street from the cottage. (The same model trailer that co-starred in 1953 Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball movie "The Long, Long Trailer") Yes, you can see parts of the green and white trailer through the bushes and trees from the living room window. Other than that, the cottage is surrounded in forest and greenery on 3 sides and is the last house on the lane, so it's very private and picturesque. It never occurred to me to mention that. Yes, it looks like our caretaker missed a few things. That's very atypical of her. The house is kept immaculately clean and usually there's no shortage of consumables or towels. My apologies for her oversight. The (electric) stove wasn't working because you and your guests had tripped the breaker by running the microwave, coffeemaker, toaster and stove at the same time. When you contacted us about it at 10 PM, I immediately drove out and flipped the breaker back and everything was working again. The house is exactly as shown in the pictures. There are even a few small upgrades since the pictures were taken. The lawn is moved every 1-2 weeks throughout the summer. Maybe in the future you should call ahead to check on lawn conditions before your arrival. Yes, we are within 8 minutes of at least 5 Lake Michigan beaches. So there's plenty of beach choices to suit everyone's preferences. Yes, Lake Michigan's coast can be hot and humid during the summer, and it even rains sometimes. The over-sized window air conditioner usually has no problem keeping the house comfortable, and we have fans in the bedrooms for those who like that. We wish you the very best in staying elsewhere in the future.
Very charming and cozy cottage. Quiet neighborhood was very welcome.
Our family enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage was just right for us. The beds were particularly comfortable. The cooking supplies and kitchen were easy to use and enjoyable..we would like to come back for a future visit..
We're glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for your kind words. We look forward to hosting you again in the future.
Cozy, clean and relaxing!
I stayed at the Dune Cottage while working in South Haven. Alison went above and beyond to make sure our stay was wonderful. She was very easy to communicate with. Her responses were prompt and she was beyond accommodating. The Dune Cottage was clean and had all the amenities we needed. I am an avid runner and found the area and South Haven to be a beautiful place to run. I would recommend the Dune Cottage to my friends and family.
Thank you for your kind words. We very much look forward to hosting you again in the future.
Not What It Seems
I stayed in this cottage this summer and I'm not sure where these reviews are coming from. IF this place was a deal, I wouldn't have been mad, but I was overcharged considering. It is NOT close to the beach at all. If you can scale a small mountain and shimmy up a rope to get to a beach -- then you'll be fine. We had to get a pass to the state park a 30 minute walk away to get to the beach OR basically trespass to get to the water. There is ONE AC unit in the entire place. I LOVE lake living so this would be fine, but the rooms became saunas at night- even with the windows open and fans going. The living room doesn't have a couch. NOTE the total bed count includes a day bed in the living room (which also serves as the couch along side 2 Adirondack chairs). The other day bed is a converted garage with no access to AC. The grill is a camper stove, so we had to get an entirely new gas canister for only one week. The "view" was a rusted out green trailer and an abandoned house.
On a positive note, there is a lot of firewood, a nice fire pit, strong wifi, a lot of parking and VERY quiet. If that works for you - great. If not, I would avoid this place.
We are sorry that Dune Cottage was not to your liking. We work very hard to provide a well-equipped, clean, comfortable and enjoyable cottage. Yes, there is a day bed in the living room and a day bed in the sun room (4th bedroom). These are in addition to the queen or double beds in the other 3 bedrooms. You appear to be misinformed about beach access. There are two main routes to the beach, neither of which require trespassing, or using a rope. And, yes, some people prefer to go the Van Buren State Park beach (2 minutes away) or the South Haven city beach (7 minutes away) because it's a shorter walk and less hilly. Yes, there is a dune between the house and the beach (hence the name, Dune Cottage).
We have terminated our relationship with the management company from this summer. We believe we can provide a better guest experience at a lower cost. If you're of the mind to give us another chance, please note our reduced booking fee and reduced rental fees. You would likely save $200-300 on a future stay. Kindest regards.
Clean, quiet, and close to the beach
I had a wonderful time staying here in South Haven. The house is very clean, quiet, and so close to the beach! And the beach is perfect for reading a book, relaxing, or just taking a walk.
The views from every window are exquisite!
I will definitely stay here again soon!! I couldn't ask for a cleaner, quieter, place than this.
Thanks Denise! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to your next visit!
A place to relax
It is important to me to leave the city when I can and return to the peace and quiet of nature. The cottage offered my family a place to get away to enjoy all Michigan has to offer. The dunes and beach were a short walk away and so beautiful and relaxing. The town is five minutes away and offers great shopping and food. The house offers much more than a clean place to sleep; it has all the comforts of home, but its a place where you can relax and breathe in the fresh, crisp air. I haven't slept that well in years. The yard is full of trees and flowers with a fire pit that makes the nights perfect with a drink in hand. I can't wait to go back and visit the cottage again as soon as I can.
Serene, comfortable setting; quiet trails leading to uncrowded Lake Michigan beaches.
