Senderos de Paz – Paths of Peace, is a 3 acre oasis, 55 yards above sea level and just 150 yards from the beautiful beach of Playa Manzanillo and a nice walk or quick drive to the breathtaking beach of Playa Hermosa.
We have a microbrewery on-site where we fabricate and sell our beer along with a small restaurant menu to our guests and the public. Our guests are welcome to use the 10 meter x 10 meter teak yoga platform/shala, located in the center of the property, with ocean and sunset views for relaxing, practicing yoga, hammock time, etc.
We are located just 10 - 15 minutes north of Santa Teresa, so with us, you'll find all the peace and tranquility you need, but you'll be close enough to jump in a car or 4-wheeler and have access to anything and everything you could want in the lively town of Santa Teresa.
Your poolside bungalow is set around a huge, endangered hardwood tree named the Gavilan. The Gavilan sits around the pool towards the ocean side of the property.
There are three bungalows on the property - Bungalow One and Two are fitted with queen beds and the third bungalow, the Brewery Bungalow, has been recently remodeled and has a full bed. Each bungalow has a full kitchen, small refrigerator, gas stove, coffee maker, wifi, satellite tv and all the kitchenware you'll need.
The bungalows are built in a simple one room studio style with the kitchen and bedroom on opposite sides of the floor plan and a separate bathroom area with the patios placed for pool, monkey, bird, and ocean viewing. The bungalows were completed in June 2012 with laurel wood ceilings and paneling and the patios, door and window frames all accented in teak.
All bungalows come completely furnished, fully equipped, and are surrounded by lush gardens, gravel walkways, private parking, pressurized hot/cold water, SKY/cable TV, wireless internet, cleaning service, gardener and laundry facilities and/or service needed.
I began visiting Mal Pais in the early 90's to explore and surf. In 2000, I realized Santa Teresa was already growing too fast, so I purchased this property in Manzanillo in 2001 and began gardening, planting and reforesting in 2004. The property has transformed from vines and brush for cows into walking trails and gardens with over 30 different type of native trees within half an acre (2000 meters) of the bungalows. Since then, the birds, butterflies, monkeys, iguanas, and animals have returned.
Take time to walk along the trails of our property...look for coatis, anteaters, jaguarundis, white face and howler monkeys, various bird species, and iguanas...or find one of our sitting areas and just watch and listen to the ocean.
We are here to help with any questions or needs, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your stay with us...
Also, in Manzanillo there are 3 mini-supermarkets, 2 typical restaurants, a fantastic seafood restaurant and of course, a brewery.
The neighborhood is very peaceful with private homes and rental homes spread out in what really is the countryside. It is a stark contrast to the high level of activity just south in Santa Teresa. Some neighbors still pass by on horseback, and it is common to see cows beings herded down the main road to a hand dug well on the beach for water and grazing. The property is located up over the ocean - 55 meters - so you can hear the waves crashing on the reef below. There are no buildings between the ocean and the property. There is a road in front of the property that takes you down to Manzanillo Beach (250 meters) which you can walk or drive. You can go south for less than 5 minutes and arrive at Hermosa Beach.
One of the great things about the beaches here are you can head down Manzanillo Beach all the way to the Bongo River (about 7 km) and somedays rarely see a footprint on the beach.
Below the property on the old road, there is a small, picturesque waterfall that is fed by our springs in the rainy season that flows under the beach road and onto the beach. Along the same road, there are a series of beautiful tide pools where you can find plenty of privacy almost any day of the year.
I love to fish and to surf and there is plenty of that here in Manzanillo, just ask!
One can arrive to the Nicoya Peninsula by direct bus out of San Jose, by renting a car and taking the ferry over from Puntarenas to Paquera, or by Sansa Air flying into Tambor.
A car can be rented out of Tambor at Budget Car Rental.
Also, we can offer to pick you up by taxi in Tambor and brought directly to the property as well as stopping in Cobano for groceries for $50.
ATV's....We have negotiated very good prices with various rental agencies for ATV rentals. This is a great option for getting around and lots of fun. Just ask.
We have private and secure parking for our guests.
Finally, many guests ask if a car or ATV is necessary. It depends on the traveler. Some people love to walk and enjoy there time here walking everywhere and seeing everything at a slower pace. I am always impressed by this. But in general, I recommend some type of vehicle during your stay so you can really get to know everything the peninsula has to offer, but it is not necessary as we have taxis that provide great service to our guests and can take you anywhere you wish to go.

About Trey Derrick
I'm a surfer/traveler who stumbled upon Mal Pais and Santa Teresa in 1993 and never could quite let go. I made the Manzanillo/Playa Hermosa area my home in 2001 and have never looked back - great waves, incredible natural setting, and interesting people - I've found my paradise. I've been fortunate to have lived all over the US, travel the roads with rock bands, drive through Central America by Jeep, live in Europe and Japan - all the while surfing - but I have been more fortunate to have had total strangers open their homes, hearts, family and cultures to me and show me things I could have never learned on my own. I'll never be able to thank them for their kindness and teachings, but I can repay them by passing what I can on to others. There's nothing I enjoy more than sharing what I've found here in this small, but unique corner of the world.
Trey Derrick purchased this Bungalow in 2001
Why Trey Derrick chose Santa Teresa Beach
I chose Manzanillo because it is far enough away from the action and the congestion of Santa Teresa, but close enough to hop in the car or on a 4-wheeler and have access to anything and everything one could want - and most importantly, the private and pristine beaches and the outstanding surfing and fishing Manzanillo has to offer!
What makes this Bungalow unique
The bungalows are surrounded by a plethora of indigenous trees, and the pool has a very old endangered Gavilan tree on the ocean side. The entire property is 3 acres and is connected by walking trails with ocean views from almost every corner of the property. The property has been reforested and planted which has brought back the birds, butterflies and animals to the property. You can sit anywhere on the property and hear the waves crashing below down at Punta Pochote.

The room was comfortable with an excellent bathroom and lots of hot water in the shower. A lovely pool was outside our door, much needle as it was very hot during the day. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and the sunsets unequalled from the second pool where our friends were staying. The beach does require a bit of a walk but it was almost empty, which we loved. This property is a number of kilometres from town and is easier to access with a car which we had. We enjoyed our time here.
If beautiful sunsets, secluded beaches, singing birds, and the sweet smells of Costa Rica’s abundant flowers are what you are looking for, then look no further. Senderos De Paz is the real Costa Rican deal. Trey has created an oasis away from the tourist traps of Santa Theresa. As soon as we stepped inside of Senderos De Paz, we knew that our Costa Rican holiday was going to be spectacular. Trey and his staff were attentive to all of our needs, but understood our need for privacy and personal space. Our cabina was very comfortable and clean with a good supply of hot water and pressure. The most difficult decision we had while staying with Trey was deciding whether to step outside and leave our little piece of paradise and and to walk the 400 meters down to the beach and experience another slice of Costa Rican heaven. From lounging in the pool, walking the beach, surf fishing, to viewing all of the creatures and plants around the area, we were completely satisfied with our choice to stay at Senderos De Paz. After two months in Costa Rica, we were able to compare Senderos De Paz to several other locations and can honestly say that Trey’s spot was one of our favorites and that we will definitely be returning. Senderos De Paz is “Tres Bien!”
Already planning our trip back!
We traveled to 4 other places in Costa Rica but this was our favorite by far. We got a little lost on the way and our car wasn't the best for travel on dirt roads down the Nicoya peninsula but when we finally arrived we were very pleased. Manzanillo is a wonderful, serene beach town (if you could even call it that, only one corner restaurant/convenience store) and Trey's property is situated on a hill above, with great views of the sunset, monkeys and lizards frequenting the area, a very short ride or walk to the beach. We rented an ATV to get to and from the surrounding towns and beaches. Overall a great time. Can't wait to visit again!
Owner on hand and very helpful, Howler and Whitefaced monkeys in the tress by our pool almost every day! We are self sufficient travellers who travel to Costa Rica for the beaches and wildlife, this was a perfect spot for us to stay. :) also great surfing just down the road
A little bubble of Paradise.
I arrived at Sendereos De Pas after an adventurous journey through the peninsula and along ocean roads to enter into a little oasis at the top of a hill overlooking the ocean. It was dark but the sounds of the howler monkeys and birds were every where. It was so peaceful and tranquil and the pool was warm and inviting and I happily plunged in.
I had the opportunity to stay in Bungalow 2, bungalow 3 as well as Villa Pichote and all of these properties reflect the descriptions and photos about them.
The wood work and detail in each one is so unique and the bungalows are perfect for two travelers. The Bathrooms are huge, the tile work and attention to detail in each place shows a great deal of pride was put into the building of this place.
Each place has a kitchen and the best part was water was already there and coffee was ready to go in the morning. Trey, the owner and operator took the time to answer any questions I had, offer rides to nearby grocery stores, restaurants and places of interest. Manzanillo beach is a less than a five minute walk down the hill and from there adventures await. You can walk for miles along the beach, the water is warm and the sunsets are beyond description.
Villa Pichote is perfect for families or a group of people. Each level has a large lanai with views right to the ocean. It's perfect for sitting outside each morning drinking Costa Rican coffee and listening to the sounds of the abundant wildlife. Evenings are enchanting and the infinity pool is enticing, complete with bar stools to drink your wine and watch the suns final descent for the evening.
Senderos de Paz truly lives up to it's name Paths of Peace. The tranquility of the surroundings and the beauty of the people who run the place Trey, Maylen, Keynor and of course the ever present guard dog Winston made it a magical place to stay.
super rad place!!! awesome people
I don't even know where to start, from the very beginning the place was magic!
After being in Costa Rica for less than 24 hrs I knew this was the place for me, whether your into views of the pacific, chilling by the pool, or just enjoying the peaceful vibration of the Manzanillo hills.
Not to even mention the cleanliness and hospitality of the place and people this was a must see/stay
destination. Between meeting the awesome manager "Trey"or any one of the beautiful house maids Im sure anyone would be as impressed as I was.
.... so if your headed over to the pacific side to either surf, do yoga , or just want to relax while
still being central to Santa Theresa, playa Hermosa, and Cobano I highly recommend getting ahold of Trey and booking a reservation at any one of his cabinas or condos!
