Cattail Creek is a long-time favorite among vacationers, prized for the magnificent beauty of the creek that runs throughout the mountain. Cattail Creek is located in Yancey County, the highest elevation in North Carolina and enjoys average temperatures in the mid-80s in the summer and lows in the 50s. Our mountain home has three bedrooms and can sleep six comfortably, seven in a trundle bed. All rooms are creekside, and downstairs has floor-to-ceiling windows which offer expansive views of the creek. There are many vistas from which to enjoy the creek including a private overlook, with views of a waterfall. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, picnic table, and fire ring. Our home is very comfortable and beautifully decorated with indigenous art and furnishings.

About Wendy Hollady
I live in Tallahassee, Florida where I work with homeless veterans.
Wendy Hollady purchased this House in 1990
Why Wendy Hollady chose Cattail Creek
Although the house was built in 1990, it is the site of a former cabin owned by my parents, and grandparent's before them. Every summer beginning in the late 50's, we would spend a memorable summer in Cattail by our beloved mountain creek. My father and both grandfathers were Methodist ministers, and considered this place 'holy ground.' My father named the house 'Shalom', which means peace.
What makes this House unique
Renters tell me that our house feels more like a home than a rental. I have a large library of books which you are welcome to borrow. The creek is an outdoor playground for kids and you will never tire of the sound of a waterfall lulling you to sleep at night. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, table, and fire ring. Trout fishing, tubing, campfires, and hiking are all available on the property, but the location is ideally situated for day trips to Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather's Mountain, whitewater rafting, the Biltmore House in Asheville, etc, all under an hour from the house.

If you need to decompress, this is for you!
I live near Asheville and have seen many, many beautiful places. This is absolutely stunning. The creek is literally steps from the house. You can hear it from every room. If you like the sound of flowing water, you're going to LOVE this. The house itself is a work of art! Someone spent a lot of time selecting the pieces of furniture & decor - functional & beautiful. The floor plan is ideal - open living, dining & kitchen area; master BR on main level with 2 equally beautiful BRs on the second floor. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need, including a lot of spices. We didn't use the fire pit, grill or gas logs but they all appeared very functional. Wendy, the owner, gives you lots of info about the property as well as things to do in the area. I've never spoken to her (just emails) but she is a jewel. I would not recommend this to people with small toddlers, but older children will adore it. If you want to beat the heat of summer, this is the place - cool & shady. Would love to see it in the fall. This Asheville family will be returning.
Nancy, thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review! Sharing my home with fabulous travelers like you makes my heart smile. Please come again.
A simply beautiful home in a breath-taking setting!
So comfortable, peaceful and inviting. This home is every bit as advertised... and more! Having grown up spending my summers on Cattail Creek, it means so much to be able to share the experience of this special place with my own children. This home was spacious enough for two families with three small children to spend an entire week without feeling like we were on top of each other. We even found affordable overflow rooms right up the road for our adult children who could only join us for a couple of days. Great rental whether you are looking for a quiet, spiritual retreat or an adventure packed hiking, rafting, shopping or sightseeing experience!
It was a pleasure having you Leah! I'm so glad that we share those wonderful summer memories, and especially glad that you got to recreate that experience with your own family. Thank you for staying at Shalom. Come back any time.
Outstanding owner, gorgeous property, wish I were back already!!!
Exactly what you’d expect based on listing, truly gorgeous property with outstanding owner.
Wondeful mountain retreat for the whole family.
Beautiful property nestled in the mountains with its own private access to the river. The home is beautifully detailed with local character and wonderfully warm mountain theme with three bedrooms and room for all. The grounds are well kept and feature multiple access points to the river where children and adults alike can play, climb, relax, fish or cool off. The home features a very open concept with windows and views from every room. Windows open the peaceful outside to the inside allowing the relaxing river sounds to fill the home. Our 9 and 7 year old boys have adventures they will take with them forever. We will be coming back. Thanks Wendy!
Oh, thank you so much Bill. I'm so glad your kids enjoyed themselves. It was my pleasure to host you for the weekend!
Gorgeous welcoming & peaceful home.
We loved staying here. The accommodations are wonderful. And the house setting is breath taking and extremely peaceful & relaxing.
This property was well stocked, spacious, very cleaned, and well accommodating for two families.
We had a very wonderful and memorable time. We enjoyed the views and tranquility of this home. It was well accommodating for two families with a spacious living room and kitchen. We created wonderful memories and plan to come back during the summer season to enjoy the beautiful flowing river.
Yancey County has more artisans per capita than any other county in the US. Burnsville is home to the renowned arts and crafts school, Penland. Festivals abound throughout the season and include Bele Chere Festival in Asheville, (the largest outdoor festival in the Southeast), the Arts and Crafts Fair in Burnsville, August 5-6, 2012, and the Carolina Literary Festival in Burnsville, September 5-7, 2012.
