Gorgeous mountain home by a roaring creek

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cattail Creek is a long-time favorite among vacationers, prized for the magnificent beauty of the creek that runs throughout the mountain. Cattail Creek is located in Yancey County, the highest elevation in North Carolina and enjoys average temperatures in the mid-80s in the summer and lows in the 50s. Our mountain home has three bedrooms and can sleep six comfortably, seven in a trundle bed. All rooms are creekside, and downstairs has floor-to-ceiling windows which offer expansive views of the creek. There are many vistas from which to enjoy the creek including a private overlook, with views of a waterfall. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, picnic table, and fire ring. Our home is very comfortable and beautifully decorated with indigenous art and furnishings.

About Wendy Hollady

I live in Tallahassee, Florida where I work with homeless veterans.

Wendy Hollady purchased this house in 1990

Why Wendy Hollady chose Cattail Creek

Although the house was built in 1990, it is the site of a former cabin owned by my parents, and grandparent's before them. Every summer beginning in the late 50's, we would spend a memorable summer in Cattail by our beloved mountain creek. My father and both grandfathers were Methodist ministers, and considered this place 'holy ground.' My father named the house 'Shalom', which means peace.

What makes this house unique

Renters tell me that our house feels more like a home than a rental. I have a large library of books which you are welcome to borrow. The creek is an outdoor playground for kids and you will never tire of the sound of a waterfall lulling you to sleep at night. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, table, and fire ring. Trout fishing, tubing, campfires, and hiking are all available on the property, but the location is ideally situated for day trips to Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather's Mountain, whitewater rafting, the Biltmore House in Asheville, etc, all under an hour from the house.

Peaceful paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay in this property was even better than the first. We enjoyed the amazing creek and slept with the windows open every night. The kitchen was great for meal prep with plenty of working surfaces and a great view. Everthing was clean and felt like home. The mornings were cool enough to enjoy the gas fireplace, yet we warmed up naturally on our hikes. We enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, and a day shopping in Asheville. This place is nothing short of paradise!

Owner's Response: .....and I have the most amazing renters!! Thank you Lisa. It means so much to know you love this place. I loved seeing evidence of your kids in the creek. I have so many memories of building damns in the creek as a child and then seeing again, my own children do the same. Thank you for your kind words and for staying at Shalom another summer!

This property was well stocked, spacious, very cleaned, and well accommodating for two families.

We had a very wonderful and memorable time. We enjoyed the views and tranquility of this home. It was well accommodating for two families with a spacious living room and kitchen. We created wonderful memories and plan to come back during the summer season to enjoy the beautiful flowing river.

Our favorite rental ever!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful time at Shalom. The pictures online don’t do the house justice. I found the house to be comfortable, roomy, and well-stocked. The owner was available to answer any questions and her kindness helped make our stay memorable. We will definitely return!

Fabulous Fall Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We somehow chose the perfect week to be leaf peepers. What a beautiful setting Shalom is perched along Cattail Creek. We cracked the windows and listened to the water while resting comfortable and cozy. Friends joined us and we toured the Blueridge Parkway and shopped in Asheville which is an easy drive. Evenings around the fire pit added to the enjoyment. The house is beautiful, comfortable and welcoming.

Beautiful home on tranquil creek

  • 5 of 5

My family (2 small boys, wife and mother) greatly enjoyed our stay at Shalom. The home is beautiful, and the backyard with flowing creek and rock formations provided fun and relaxing atmosphere right out of the backdoor. Pleasant 15 minute drive to Burnsville, and close to Linville and Mt. Mitchell areas. Would definitely recommend this home to others.

Yancey County has more artisans per capita than any other county in the US. Burnsville is home to the renowned arts and crafts school, Penland. Festivals abound throughout the season and include Bele Chere Festival in Asheville, (the largest outdoor festival in the Southeast), the Arts and Crafts Fair in Burnsville, August 5-6, 2012, and the Carolina Literary Festival in Burnsville, September 5-7, 2012. Gem mining is a favorite among kids, as well as an old fashion movie theatre with old fashioned prices: Only $5.00 for current films!
