About Gary Hester and The Hester Family
We're the Hester Family and this is our mountain home, thanks to Mom and Dad and the Hall Family too, some of us have been coming to Highlands since the 1950's. Wow. Lots of changes since then. But loads of memories! We love it so much and now we'll sharing it with you if you like.
Gary Hester and The Hester Family purchased this House in 1988
Why Gary Hester and The Hester Family chose Mirror Lake
Back in the 1950's Curt Hester started bringing the family to Highlands. Their dear friends the Halls had come to Highlands and fallen in love with the area. After many summer trips to the area, Curt decided it was time to go ahead and buy some property. So in the 70's he bought a few lots in the area. Then in the 80's when it was getting close to retirement time, Curt decided to build his dream home in Highlands. By 1990 Curt and Hazel had moved to Highlands permanently. They enjoyed the beauty of the area and had many picnics by the lakes, streams and while sitting on top of sunset rock. They remained in Highlands until 2011 leaving a family legacy of beauty and love of the mountains.
What makes this House unique
Our 3 story home is a great place to bring people together but also a great place to get a little alone time. Just send the kids to the Den and you've got the upstairs all to yourself. Walk down through the back of the property and hang out on a bench in the woods and just soak up nature. Or lounge on the deck and listen to the wind in the trees. Coffee on the deck in the early morning is amazing!!! Just a whoosh and a whistle of the wind to keep you company and occasionally a curious squirrel!

Comfortable, peaceful mountain retreat.
We really enjoyed our time. Check in and out were easy. It was a great location. Nice fireplace. Unfortunately we only had firewood for one night of our stay. Also the upstairs toilet leaked on the floor and there is an unpleasant smell under the kitchen sink. Otherwise very nice. A great way to spend New Years.
GREAT HOUSE IN THE MOUNTAINS
This house is in a great location, very close to town. What I really liked was the fact that the house was very clean which is very important to me, in my other stays in the Highlands the
houses were not very clean, so for cleanliness I would give it a 5 star. This will be my favorite place to stay and I will call them every time Ralph and I decide to come for a visit! The house has a wonderful fire place of which we used every night, since it was very cold. It has a huge deck in the back that would be great in the summer with a wonderful grill. It did not have any paper towels or napkins, soap and more toilet paper so make sure you bring some with you, I'm sure they just forgot to stock those items. All in all we had a fabulous time there and I would highly recommend it to anyone!
Perfect home for us to relax with our Golden Retriever
House and furnishings are basic. We enjoyed the setting in the woods - driveway is on a big slope that my husband had no difficulty with - I parked on street :-)
We are glad you had a great time in our vacation home, in Highlands. We enjoy the woods setting immensely and yet it is still close enough to walk into town. You are welcome to stay again anytime. We park on the street during the winter (Ice/snow), but up/down the driveway the rest of the year. Plenty of room at the bottom of the driveway to turn around and go back up.
Nicely maintained older property
The property is a bit older and does not appear to have been updated in a while, but has been reasonably maintained and is certainly convenient to town. In a way it was fun and reminded us of the homes we grew up in during the 70s. The deck area is very nice, with about half covered, which is nice when there is an occasional rain. Considering its proximity to town, it is still quite private.
Very dated and poorly equiped.
Someone needs to give the property owner a checklist of recommended kitchen utensils and cooking utensils. Extra pillows were in the walk in closet, but no extra pillow cases. The cabin has a good layout, but just presents itself as very tired and in need of a good cleaning and "sprucing up." At the very least someone needs to be following up with the cleaning crew to assure that the cob webs are knocked down.
VERY unfair rating. All others have been 4's or 5's.
Kitchen and Cooking utensils were in various drawers and have been consolidated into two. Several utensils have been recently purchased, to replace any missing. New coffee maker was added.
Pillow cases were in the bathroom closets, NOT in the walk in closet.
Cob Webs were found on some decorative items, which are placed high up on the garden walls and have been addressed with the cleaning crew.
The rest of the interior of the home was spotless, when I personally visited it on September 1st.
The total exterior of the house has just been recently painted (week of 10/15/16). The interior painting has been touched up, where needed, as well.
The cleaning crew does many vacation homes in Highlands and are highly recommended by both Owners and Rental Offices.
Great peaceful location.
The house is in a great location - peaceful but yet just a 20 minute walk to town, half of which is a shady country road. The house is surrounded by trees, in a very natural setting, with a large back deck, party open and partly covered, for reading and eating. The only downside is that the decor is a bit dated. The room arrangement works well but note that the downstairs family room is accessed via the garage. The owner and caretaker were very responsive to any needs. The single car garage is a plus for rental property. The driveway is VERY steep (common in Highlands) but our sports car with a very low clearance did not bottom out.
Highlands has been a mountain respite for over a century allowing our visitors to unwind while being treated to the finest amenities.
We feature several spas for those requiring special attention. Our accommodations range from historic inns and quaint bed and breakfasts to hotels and cabins. Homes are available for rent by the week or month.
For your dining experience, you may sample various culinary cuisines from over twenty restaurants including five who have been awarded the coveted Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
Nature is never far away with waterfalls, hiking trails, and varied outdoor adventures awaiting you. You can experience llama treks to all terrain vehicle tours through the forests. White water rafting is nearby. For those less adventurous, there is horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, tennis, and golf.
If you are looking for a cultural experience, we have professional summer stock theater at the Highlands Playhouse, the 25th anniversary of Highlands Cashiers Chamber Music concerts, the American Museum of Cut and Engraved Glass, and varied other productions. The Center for Life Enrichment offers several classes each week on varied topics. Enjoy the auction at Scudders or shows at various art galleries.
Several non profits have events throughout the year. Check our calendar for events by the Highlands Historical Society, Bascom Louise Gallery, The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center, Carpe Diem Farms, the Art League of Highlands, the Highlands Plateau Audubon Society, and Mountain Garden Club.
Shopping in our little village includes unique shops featuring art, antiques, clothing, jewelry, crafts, home furnishing, and a broad range of retail selections not found at your neighborhood mall.
Young people can enjoy programs at the Highlands Nature Center, Performing Arts Center, Highlands Playhouse, and the Highlands Recreation Center.
