About Alan Evans

Originally from London, England, my wife Brenda and I moved to France in 2003, following retirement from our soft furnishing/interior design business. We have lived in this area since then, first at Saint-Georges-sur-Cher and now at Saint-Aignan.We have a large family in England and go visiting twice a year.

Alan Evans purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

Why Alan Evans chose Saint-Aignan

We purchased this property in 2004. I knew it was for sale, even though there was no board outside or was not being advertised at all. We have carried out extensive renovations as it was totally neglected and in an awful condition. We were nevertheless attracted by it's position overlooking the river Cher, and close proximity to restaurants, bars etc.. Of course, the region speaks for itself, surrounded by the chateaux and vineyards of la Loire, and 5 mins from Zoo Park Beauval.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The house has the benefits associated with Maisons de Maitre. High ceilings, parquet flooring, wall paneling, marble fireplaces, but also comfortably furnished, with modern heating system, electrics, and sanitation.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed in March 2013 with 6 adults on a family holiday. The lovely restored old stone house accomodated us all very well with three large bedrooms and ample living space downstairs. The kitchen was adequate and enabled us to cook up a feast from the Saturday market. The view over the river Cher was simply stunning. As our stay was at the tail end of winter we missed out on enjoying the terrace overlooking the river and the sun drenched courtyard, but the house was warm and inviting.

We made many trips to various chateaux in the area all within a short drive of Saint-Aignan, as well as day trips to outlying caves and wonderful market towns.

The medieval town of Sait-Aignan is amazing with it's ancient church and chateau as the centrepiece. The bakery is fantastic, with the local people accomodating and friendly. There are nice restaurants, good supermarkets and lovely specialist shops as you wander around the ancient streets. A walking tour of the town ( in English ) is run by the local tourism office which opens your eyes to everything that Saint-Aignan has to offer. The Saturday market in the square has great seasonal local produce, and vineyards are a short walk away.

Highly recommended for a Loire Valley indulgence. Everything is right at your doorstep with Alan on hand to ensure you have everything you need.

Beautifully furnished house in historic town centre

  • 5 of 5

Another fantastic week at St Aignan in this delightful house. Our family of four very much enjoyed the town centre location (boulangerie and restaurants within a few minutes walk) with its wonderful views across the river Cher. All the rooms are beautifully furnished with very high ceilings so that the house is light and airy inside. Very easy to reach many local chateaux by car/bicycle and this year we also visited Zooparc Beauval which exceeded expectation (especially the bird show). Thank you Alan for another lovely holiday in St Aignan.

Definitely 4star, a dream place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

Great location with river views in a charming town St Aignan. The house was lovely, spacious, clean, well equipped and well maintained. It was very comfortable and delightfully furnished. Alan the owner was very, very nice and always helpful. It was great for us as Australians to stay in a period house - we really enjoyed it. The chateau and cathedral were lit up at night and there were cobbled streets, a fabulous bakery/patisserie, an amazing cheese shop and many other shops and restaurants. We were very impressed by the high quality of the food available in France and visited markets at Loches, Amboise and Saint Aignan both for food and a wide variety of other retail. We visited many of the chateaus in the Loire valley and our favourite was Chenonceaux, we hired bikes and rode by the Loire in Amboise and generally enjoyed French culture and the many beautiful villages and towns. We loved our stay here and highly recommend it.

Surpassed expectation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four enjoyed a fabulous week in Saint Aignan. The house was spotless, full of character and well equipped for self-catering. We loved the town and had several delicious meals at restaurants just a few steps away. Splendid views of the river from the balcony too. Also very convenient for visiting local chateaux - many within half an hour's drive (or a bit longer on a bike!).

Highly recommended.

French charm

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from Saint Aignan and enjoyed a superb stay at this property. The house is beautiful and spacious, with lovely rooms and very comfortable beds. The view over the river from most of the rooms and the sunny terrace was lovely and we, too, we're treated to the spectacular ascent of a hot air ballon as well as a local fete and local families enjoying a stroll or splash along the banks of the River Cher. The town has all the amenities you need as well as great choice of restaurants within five minutes walk. Saint Aignan is a perfect location to tour the chateaux of the region; almost all the chateaux are within an hour's drive. We couldn't have asked for anything more. Alan was a great host and on hand if anything was needed. We have been to France many times but few places we have stayed have been so perfect. Highly, highly recommended!

Situated 50 kilometers south-east of Tours, and 40 kilometres south west of Blois, historic Saint Aignan is an ideal place to experience traditional French culture. With it's wine-industry, a bustling Saturday market offering fresh fish & local produce, numerous restaurants and cafes, and an indoor/outdoor swimming pool all within 5 minutes walk. The medieval collegial (church) features an 11th century crypt with wall paintings dating from that period. While the Chateau commands spectacular views over the river and roof tops. I must not forget the geographical importance of Saint-Aignan relative to important historical sites in the history of France and England, see the burial place of Richard Coeur de Lion at Fontevrault.

The famous Zoo Beauval is 5 minutes away, and the area is famed for it's Chateaux at Chenonceau, Chambord, Amboise,Valençay, & my personnel favourite Chaumont with it's world-renowned view across La Loire, and beautiful gardens.
