About Nan Richardson
We are a family of 7 brothers and sisters (plus assorted spouses or significant others, 14 offspring, lots of cousins, in-laws, and friends) who live variously in New York, Washington DC, London, and Los Angeles. We return like the swallows of Capistrano to Spring Lake for our annual Memorial Day extravaganza, and for many weekends and early vacation weeks. It holds many happy memories for us, and for our children now as well. We are lawyers, publishers, hotel decorators, science editors, art directors, video filmmakers turned property managers, architects. This is the place we come to be together with our extended family who still live in this charming town: cousins, aunts and uncles.
Nan Richardson purchased this House in 1960
Why Nan Richardson chose Spring Lake
Our grandfather came from Ireland (when his older brother inherited the property), to make his fortune in America. He bought a farm in Princeton and part of an old estate in Spring Lake and we summered there with grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, a big extended family, in a compound created from the old carriage houses and stables and gardens of Grandfather's peonies and irises. When two lawyer friends (who lived with their 6 children a few houses away) had to move for work, my parents swapped homes with them. (But in the neighborhood our house is still 'the Maloy house.') It was reportedly built by a Mason (who was a mason) in 1910 and he built it well; the steps and proportions follow those magic numbers. It is a lovely, solid, happy home, and we have great memories of fireflies and flashlight tag, of the screen door slamming softly and Mother coming out on the porch wth a tray of vanilla cream sodas we sipped on the the wicker couch, and the strawberry patch and the sweetness of the lilacs and Rose of Sharon blooming, and the beach all shimmering in that summer light .... Finally, after 50 years, we finished a massive renovation to bring all to a state-of-the art level. Since our children love it as much as we do, the house is now good for the next 50 years, so their children will someday enjoy it too!
What makes this House unique
Peaceful, restful, deeply restorative are the associations we have with being in Spring Lake at this Brighton house. Evening strolls on the boardwalks, morning runs on the beaches, leisurely bike rides anytime, reading (and a little nap) on the porch sofa with its view of the sea, hanging out and catching up in the awning shade, fishing off the bridges in Spring Lake, or deep sea out of Shark River, great BBQs in the backyard, trips to the 5 & 10 for penny candy, to Jean Louise for chocolates, to Hoffman's or Peterson's (now The Sunday Times) for ice cream, The Scone Pony or Tom Bailey's for freshly-baked croissants or doughnuts, and so much more! It's like a Norman Rockwell painting of another time, and the small town feel is underlined in all the daily scenes of boys riding lazily home with their surfboards tucked under arm on their bicycles, or grandparents reading the Sunday paper on the benches by the lake as families of swans glide by. (It is the quintessential beach town: winter population 2700, swelling to 25,000 in summer). And a small piece of heaven on earth.

My college friends meet every year for a weekend getaway. We rented this house in June. It was perfect for us! There was plenty of room. It was a few blocks from the beach and 2 blocks from the downtown area. So convenient! Spring Lake is just beautiful and not your typical Jersey shore point.
The house is perfect. Great size, beautiful kitchen and backyard.
The house is very well kept and cleanly. The yard is beautifully landscaped. We couldn't have enjoyed our stay anymore. Perfect!
Great weekend getaway
With a small group of girlfriends, booked the house for a pre-wedding
last hurrah weekend. It was wonderful to stay there off season. I have
been there in summer (which is fantastic-great beach and pools, bar scene
in towns nearby ), but the town has real charm in the off months also-
very peaceful and pretty. The weather was mostly lovely and we spent
the days walking and running every morning on on the beach and
boardwalks, going on bike rides to little seaside restaurants for lunch,
then having massages and scrubs at a nearby spa, doing a little retail
therapy at the very nice boutiques there, hitting the nearby antique
shops one rainy day and finding treasures, eating the yummy chocolates at
the TWO shops in town and- we had to try both of course! And cooking
great dinners and having a great time together hanging out at night before
the really nice fireplace. We had brunch at Parker House Sunday which was
It was just the bonding time we all needed. I love Spring Lake in

The house was very clean and cozy and everything went so smoothly. My
friends loved it. We will definitely come again!.
Glad that your group had a nice time and may I add thank you for leaving the house so tidy. We would be very glad to have you back -- in any season!
It was a lovely way to spend a week in autumn.
The location was really perfect - walking distance from the train to NYC, to the beach, to town. So really didn’t need a car (but as we drove from Boston had one anyway). We pretty much walked everywhere in Spring Lake but used the car to explore other towns along the shore. The house is immaculate, sunny and cheerful feeling, delightfully decorated and spacious. Character-filled mix of modern and vintage. Bathrooms and kitchen all pristine - with everything you need! The four bedrooms on the second floor are very comfortable - great beds and attractive furnishings. Having two nice bathrooms on the 2nd floor works really well for everyone. And one off the kitchen is very convenient.
The fireplace was great to have the one cool night we were there. Firewood is provided, even some kindling (most places don’t offer that in my experience). Gigantic yard for Spring Lake- beautifully landscaped, very pleasant to sit under the plum tree and read. We enjoyed moving from the deck to the porches following the sun depending on the time of day for morning coffee, lunch and cocktails.
It was so nice to be at the beach without the crowds. We were entertained watching the handful of surfers enjoying the great waves. The water was still warm enough to swim and the days were simply beautiful and nights perfect for sleeping-- with windows open. (NO AC needed!) Owner was terrific to deal with; answered all questions promptly and was very helpful with suggestions for dining and activities.
Hope to stay again!
Great weekend getaway
Beautiful and spacious house and property in a spectacular jersey shore town. Nicely and comfortably furnished.
This is Spring Lake!!
This charming dutch colonial was probably one of the first lovely neighborhood homes built in Spring Lake. It is walking distance to the beach and downtown Spring Lake. It is very roomy and comfortable for a large family. The bathrooms and kitchen have been updated along with a sophisticated HVAC programming system. Back yard is very generous and perfect for kids to run around. Home is chuck full of games, books, toys for every age. A bit pricey, but after all this is Spring Lake!
One of the prettiest towns on the Jersey Shore, retaining its Victorian charm with wonderful pristine beaches, a boardwalk with wooden gazebos, two sweet lakes with little bridges, and adorable downtown with a honest-to-goodness 5 and Dime, attractive shops, two chocolate stores and other childhood delights. Great dining options nearby. Everyone gets around on bicycles. A gentle, relaxing place, out of time. Perfect.
