About Brooke & Charlie McIlvaine

We have roots in Philadelphia, live in CT, and work in NYC. With our three children, we spend a chunk of each summer in Maine.

Brooke & Charlie McIlvaine purchased this house in 2011

Why Brooke & Charlie McIlvaine chose Mount Desert Island

Our family built this house in 1901 as well as the surrounding houses and were pioneers from Philadelphia in creating the summer colony on Mt. Desert sometimes called 'Philadelphia on the Rocks'. Mt. Desert is an amazing island that has such a diverse number of memorable activities. We haven't missed a summer here and for good reason.

What makes this house unique

This is a spacious, light, characterful home which was built for comfort and long summer stays. The property (contiguous to other family houses), location, and personal connection drew us to acquire it.

Our best family vacation home ever

  • 5 of 5

Our week in Maine at the Aleria Cottage described in a single word was "PERFECT" The roominess of the home is much larger than Illustrated in the photos and the grounds are beautiful with flower gardens galore the cottage is located in a very quiet serine setting, yet within an easy walk to the village of Southwest Harbor. Plenty of room for children to play in the spacious yard, and, plenty of firewood provided if you come upon one of those occasional cool summer Maine nights.

A Great Time Was Had By All!

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 6 friends. Everyone loved the house. It was so warm and comfortable. It felt like a well loved family home that always welcomed friends who came to visit. We had everything we needed in the house.Everything was taken care of very well. All the suggestions from the owner were helpful. We would all recommend this lovely house to anyone interested. Southwest Harbor was a charming town with lots of things to do. Bar Harbor was nearby. Please check the cruise ship arrival schedule before you go there to make sure 6,000 people are not getting off the ship the day you plan to go there. Be sure to go visit the Granite Museum. The gent who runs is is one of the last granite men around knowing how everything was done in the old days. We only wish we could have stayed longer. Aleria Cottage was the perfect place to stay on a perfect vacation.

Loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at Aleria Cottage at the end of June. The house is charming, roomy, and comfortable. Enjoyed the garden too! Perfect location to walk to the town of Southwest Harbor. Only a short drive to Acadia's major attractions. The owner was wonderful too.

Great Family Experience

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 9 adults and one 2 year old spent a week at Aleria. It was fabulous. The house was roomy and comfortable, the kitchen was well-equipped and the location was excellent. It was the perfect base for outside activities in Acadia National Park, and evenings were spent enjoying the warmth of the fireplace and movies on the TV. Every one of us enjoyed this experience thoroughly and we are already talking about when we can do it again.

The owner was a pleasure to deal with. He responded to e-mail and phone messages and gave good advice about restaurants, hiking, boating and biking. We found our way around easily and felt completely comfortable in the area.

One note: try to arrive in daylight--it is a bit harder to find the house at night and took us two passes. After that it was simple.

Wild Women

  • 5 of 5

We - a group of women who enjoy hiking and visiting National Parks - gathered in Acadia this year. Our stay at Aleria Cottage was fantastic. It is in Southwest Harbor - a 15 minute drive from Bar Harbor - which made it great. Southwest is a quiet, lovely place accessible to much. The house was perfect - with lots of space to find solitude and big rooms to gather for talks or wonderful dinners. The mornings and evenings were delightful as the deer came over for some of the berries that fell from the trees. We enjoyed badminton in the back yard and frisbee in the front. A well-stocked and welcoming home. Charles was especially responsive to all questions and needs.

family time

  • 5 of 5

we would recommend Aleria cottage to was wonderful! Older home with all the modern conveniences and great personality. It was so easy to move into and suited our family of 6 adults and 4 teenage grandchildren perfectly. Large bedrooms with lots of closet space. We felt the house come alive when we moved in. It all seemed better than the photos. All loved the yard and flowers. Great kitchen. The owners were very helpful with questions about the property. we loved the location! Wonderful quiet neighborhood. We walked into town almost every day; we walked to the dock; to the SW Harbor; to the Claremont Hotel, to Beals Lobster Pound. We loved Thurston's Lobster Pound. The kids got bikes and rode the Seawall Road around to Wonderland and Ships Harbor Hikes. We all visited Bass Harbor Lighthouse. The local kayak company was wonderful and they all enjoyed a trip to see nature (seals) on the west side of the island. We drove to Acadia for hiking, the loop road stopping at interesting points along the way, Jordan pond, Parkman Mtn, Cadillac mountain sunrise, Gorham Mountain, the Coast trail starting at Sand Beach, and a carriage ride. We all did Beech Mountain and some fished at Long Lake. We walked to Bar Island. We had pizza at Rosalies in Bar Harbor. There were so many more things we wanted to do and could easily have stayed another week or two...We had a wonderful time celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. cannot wait to go back.

Southwest Harbor (ferry to Cranberry Island, etc)

Located in the heart of Acadia National Park where there are countless mountains to hike, lakes to swim in, and famous hiking and carriage trails to hike or mountain bike. 10 minutes walk to quaint Southwest Harbor for refined cuisine dining, shops, groceries (including a super characterful general store with high end food offerings), hardware store, bakery, drug store, ice cream, fun shops, etc. etc. are located. Mount Desert is also known for being a noted capital of world class sailing so much so that the famous Hinckley sail boats and and Morris yachts are made on the island. Surrounding Mount Desert (which has the only natural fjord in North America piercing the middle of the island) are several smaller islands which are easily accessable by boat and regularly scheduled water taxis. Boating is amazing. Must islands like Little Cranberry (terrific art galleries, on-dock restaurant, etc.), Big Cranberry (walking/biking), Bakers (light house, hike across to the 'dancing rocks' shore with giant pink granite rocks), etc. are all within reach. Hiking is also world class with phenomenal views from mountains (Flying Moutain, Valley Peak, Acadia, Western/Mansell, etc. on this side of the island and 15-30 minute easy drive to other side of the island for mountains such as Sergeants, Norumbega, Cadillac, Champlain, Acadia National Park for more detail) and multiple lakes to swim in (Long Pond and Echo Lake are 10 minutes or less by car and try jumping off the Echo Lake Bluffs which is across the street from entrance to Acadia mountain trail). A fresh-off-the-boat lobster pound is in walking distance by 10 minutes. You can also walk directly out of the driveway down to the beach and walk along it for a taste of the well known rocky Maine coast. If you are a garden lover, you need to see Thulya Garden (Northeast...reachable by boat or by car) or the Rockefeller Gardens. Dining on the island will please even the most discriminating taste (seriously...) and in walking distance are very refined restaurants like Red Sky or Fiddler on the Green. Go to Bar Harbor by car which is 20 minutes or by a free bus (leaves every 45 mins or so...teenagers can go on their own its that easy). There are plenty of restaurants (Havanna is very good) and ice cream at Ben & Bills is memorable. Tons of shops in Bar Harbor, too. Another thought is to walk to the famous turn-of-the-century characterful hotel The Claremont (10 mins walk) and have a drink on their cool bar on the dock, play croquet on their lawn, dine on the their porch, etc. Also 10 mins walk is the Causeway Club. They have a 9 hole links course (allows for public to play) and tennis, both of which are right along the water (Somes Sound). More challenging golf is at 18 hole Kebo which is a 20 min drive toward Bar Harbor. Mountain bike along the carriage trails and try going over toward Jordan Pond where you can find endless trails and end up at Jordan Pond House for lunch or the famous popovers and tea in a setting that will blow your mind. You won't get through all a list of 'must sees' in a week as there are so many. Trust me, you will sleep well at night.
