About Karen Key Speck
My family saw this property by boat over a hundred years ago and became an original settler on Orcas Island homesteading about 150 acres in total.
Karen Key Speck purchased this Cottage in 1890
Why Karen Key Speck chose San Juan County
There were five children who each inherited property. My son and I bought this particular piece of land from my brother. We built a new cottage, but retained the rural spirit of the beautiful land, beach and views.
What makes this Cottage unique
The end of the road privacy is a special commodity in this busy, hectic world. At our beautiful cottage you can walk the beach, play in the field, sun on the deck, or relax inside with a good book. We invite you to see what our family discovered over 122 years ago. You can even visit the local museum and learn about our homesteading forefathers.

Beautiful place with amazing view
We loved the place. It was comfortable and had everything we needed for a weekend away with four adults and two children. The view from the cabin was stunning and the outdoor space perfect for two infants that just started walking. We will be back for sure and highly recommend this rental and location.
Our stay this last November at this property was beyond all expectations. The pictures did not do the property justice and we were completely enchanted with the location and the cozy cottage. Our accommodations were clean, modern and cozy all at the same time and the fireplace came in handy. The neighbors were quiet and friendly and the views and the beach begged us to explore. The owners did a wonderful job of making sure we had everything we needed to get to our location including turn-by-turn directions. We can't wait to return!!!
Thank you for your thoughtful review. Too bad we had windstorms during your stay, but you embraced the pioneer spirit like a local! Come see us again soon.

Great property, amazing views, lovely private beach and lookout
Really enjoyed our stay. The grass yard in front of the property allowed us to throw a frisbee around. The picnic gazebo was great (although the weather prevented us from using it). The private beach was lovely. Just to the left of the beach was a small trail that let you climb/hike onto an overlook above the water where you were surrounded by water for 260 degrees! (VERY small hike, maybe 200 yards). The house was cozy and comfortable. The only thing missing from making this the perfect get away would have been a hottub on the desk, but apart from that we had a really lovely stay.
We love to play Frisbee. You're right - great spot to do so. Maybe one day we'll have a hot tub, but are so glad you found other great ways to relax while visiting Orcas with us!

Perfect family getaway
My husband and I came with our 21 month old daughter and it was the perfect spot. The house was clean and had everything you needed even a few nice upgrades. What really impressed us was how quiet and peaceful it was. We had this great open view of the water and green space which led to the beach. The beach was beautiful, we brought our stand up paddle board and got to enjoy a nice paddle in the morning. Lots of wild life seals, crabs, hawks, fish and other birds. Highly recommend this spot, it's truly a slice of what heaven on earth would be! The owner was very nice too and also let us say hello to his cows which our daughter loved.
Wish we could have stayed longer..
We were only able to spend two nights, but would have loved to have had more time enjoying this property. The view is amazing and the property worked great for us.
We have family that live on Orcas and I had actually lived very near to this property about 35+ years ago, but had since moved away. We were back on Orcas, to have a memorial service celebration, for my Mom who had recently passed. We needed a place that would accommodate my limited mobility concerns and this home worked out very well. It has access into the house via a ramp, vs stairs, so that was a winner. It is it has some grab bars in the bathroom, but could use some in the bath/shower. I had some difficulty with the high side tub.
The house was clean and well stocked for whatever you might need.
The location can be a bit of a drive from Eastsound, but you get to drive through Moran State park, so it is a beautiful drive. Be warned that there are lots of deer, curvey roads and no streetlights, so at night, just slow down and take your time and under drive the speed limit.
We had a bit of confusion on exactly how much housekeeping we needed to do, even though we were charged for housekeeping. There is a request to start the load of used linens in the wash upon leaving, wash and put away dishes and take out the garbage with you to the dump site that you will pass on the way back to the ferry( or be charged a fee). I think we did what was requested and shouldn't have any additional charges, but for the $115. Housekeeping fee, I sort of felt like that should be included. We were only there for 2 days and 2people, so didn't generate too much mess/garbage, but clearly if a longer stay or larger group, it could be more of an expense for the owners. Anyway, just was a bit different policy from other properties we have stayed at.
I didn't make the trip down to the beach because I was using a walker and it was just a bit tough going under my own speed, but my husband went exploring and brought back photos and it looks fantastic ! Great for families, I am sure!
Thanks for letting us share your special spot in the world!
Great place, we'd stay again.
Quiet home at the end of the road on the water, what a view. The whole interior appears to have been gutted and remodeled. They did a fantastic job.
A special spot and lovely rental indeed. Glad you enjoyed your stay!
