This mountain cabin is located in the Sequoia National Forest, at an elevation of 7200 feet and in a small community known as Ponderosa. The cabin has 3 bedrooms plus a loft, and 2 full bathrooms. Each bedroom has a queen-size bed, and the loft has twin-size bunk beds (can sleep 2). The living room also has a queen-size sleeper sofa. The cabin has newer appliances, washer & dryer, stone hearth fireplace, mud room and redwood deck overlooking a grove of aspens & pines.
Please note: This cabin is located in the Sequoia National Forest, and in the southern section of the Sequoia National Monument. We are off the CA-190/Western Divide Hwy, at the top of the summit and between Camp Nelson & Kernville. We are approximately 2 1/2 hours away from Sequoia National Park.
My husband Joe & I live in San Diego, California, and are both huge outdoor enthusiasts. Our hobbies include hiking, biking, skiing/snowboarding, horseback riding, backpacking, traveling, and training our two German Shepherd dogs.
Katie & Joe Messeri purchased this cabin in 2012
My husband and I found Ponderosa in 2011, sort of by mistake, and instantly fell in love with the surrounding area and all its splendor. Ponderosa truly is one of the last great California mountain towns, tucked away amidst millions of acres of National Forest. Just steps away from our front door are miles of endless trails that will take you to many points of interest, including the Giant Sequoia National Monument, Needles Lookout, the Quaking Aspen meadow, Slate Mountain, Dome Rock, Camp Nelson, the Golden Trout Wilderness Pack Station, and the Trail of 100 Giants.
From the Giant Sequoias and Ponderosa Pines to the Quaking Aspens, this area offers serenity & peace, and an opportunity to disconnect for a few days and enjoy nature. We hope you enjoy the cabin as much as we do, and that your time here invigorates you and recharges your batteries as much as it does for us.
There are so many wonderful, cozy things about this cabin that we love, and too many to name here. Some of our most favorite things about it are the large stone hearth fireplace, the giant floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, the rustic accents, and the warm feel of it all. We're also at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, which offers privacy and opens up to the numerous trails beyond. But most of all, I think it's the view from the deck that we love the most, which overlooks a grove of Quaking Aspens and Ponderosa Pines. We may hike all day, and then come home to the cabin for a BBQ dinner on the deck before settling in and relaxing next to the fireplace.
Hi! Just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful, fabulous, spectacularly
Fall weekend!!!! It was gorgeous up there - the cabin sits in the best
Aspen grove in the area! Every time we left, we came back to the glory of
the trees and the leaves and the smells... it was just what I needed,
except that I didn't want to come home!!!
The cabin was perfect!!! You have it done perfectly for the mountains - comfy and cute as well! Everything was great and our family had a fantastic vacation! We went to the 100 Giants, Dome Rock and hiked most of the trail to Needles lookout -and had a great burger (and a Fat Tire and Sierra Nevada!!!) at the Lodge!
It was exactly the getaway we were looking for... thanks again so much!!
Katie was a lovely and responsive hostess who communicated all pertinent details of the trip promptly. The cabin was comfortable, fully equipped, and was a perfect place to stay! We spent time looking at the hundreds of stars at night that aren't visible in the city at night, and made smores in the fireplace in the cozy living room. We made dinner in the kitchen, had a cookout on the deck, and the dogs had a blast as well! This listing is great for a get away, would highly recommend this cabin, and a huge thank you to Katie for making our stay possible :)
My young daughter and I had a great experience while at this cabin. It was spacious, comfortable, and cozy. It had everything we needed to stay comfortable! The location was also perfect, and even the backyard and surrounding areas offered beautiful views, nice walks/hikes, including a swing. My daughter and I had a wonderful week of quiet time together and enjoyed evening walks to the nearby lodge for happy hour. I would 100% recommend this rental for any family!
We just came back from our short vacation in Sequoia National Monument. Stayed in Ponderosa Cabin, and are very happy with our decision. Cabin location was great, backed by very serene and peaceful forest. If you want to relax and forget about every day stress from work and city life, you can do that here. Owners where very helpful and provided every information about the cabin and surrounding activities. We had a great time in Ponderosa Cabin.
Katie was very accommodating and made me feel comfortable with all transactions. My three small dogs had a blast and it was just what my teenage sisters needed. My boyfriend loved having coffee on the deck and my mother said the kitchen had everything she needed. I found a swing in the back of the house that I somehow missed when reading the description so I was very excited when I found it. We had a lovely, relaxing time!
This is a full-amenity very homey and comfortable cabin perfect for a family or extended family situation. And that's not even the best part; the best part is why you are going up there anyway-to get away from it all. To breathe in the crisp mountain air, lose yourself in the magnificent starry nights, listen to real silence, and hike in the woods which surround you. Ponderosa is at the top of the mountain but still just short drives to Cedar Slope and Camp Nelson, plus hiking trails including Dome Rock, Trail of Hundred Giants and so on. There were 5 of us; me and my husband and our teenage to adult-aged kids. We found plenty to do without having to get in the car at all, and when we did, we found ourselves just pulling over on the side and exploring some ravine, forestry road or rocky hill. There's as much to explore "off" the beaten path, as there is on.
Some standouts regarding the cabin:
*Thoughtful furniture/ lights arrangement. Functional and comfortable
*Kitchen fully equipped w/everything you need. Get your groceries before you go then put them away, and it's like you're at home. You are going to want to cook because it's not convenient to go to Camp Nelson three times a day.
*Comfortable beds with heavy blankets; feels good
*Big L-shaped sofas around the hearth for lounging. We brought some DVD's and card/board games. Katie has a collection of Stephan King novels, which my daughter and I dove into.
*Fireplace works great, flue sucks it all up, no smoke or irritated eyes. We bought 4 bundles of firewood at Lowes in Porterville and 2 more stacks at Camp Nelson store. We gathered around the fire every night to play games, read, watch old movies, roast marshmallows and sip cocoa or wine.
*Handy mud room for keeping your coats, hats and boots
*The lay out is open, bright and functional- everything downstairs is centrally located around the kitchen, making for a roomy, yet cozy space where everyone can gather easily.
This was a last-minute trip requiring quick-paced e-mails and phone calls between owner Katie and myself. I found her accommodating, flexible and thorough. We arrived tired and ready for a break. We left rejuvenated. A lovely cabin, a lovely mountain, a wonderful experience.
Three generations of us spent our Thanksgiving in this spacious, rustic cabin. It was well furnished and well equipped. Everyone enjoyed putting the puzzles together in front of the large stone fireplace. Lots of hiking in this beautiful part of the country. The owner, Katie, couldn't have been more gracious or helpful. This is a wonderful spot to gather your family.
The Ponderosa Lodge is just a 5 minute walk down the road, and features a restaurant, bar & small general store. Cabin is just minutes from several trailheads that take you to Dome Rock, Needles Lookout, Slate Mountain, & other various trails. The famous Trail of 100 Giants is just a short drive away, and accessible during the summer months.
