About the property

Aloha, and welcome to Simply Paradise - Hale Honu on Sunny Kaloli Point. Our cozy cottage is on a peaceful forest retreat along rugged volcanic coastline, on the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Just 20 minutes south of Hilo International Airport. Located in Hawaiian Paradise Park Subdivision, our home is in a safe, friendly, local neighborhood where you can walk, bike and enjoy the ocean scenery, you can even fish off the ocean cliffs nearby. Excellent for the whole family or perfect for a romantic getaway.

Hale Honu is an immaculate cottage with fully equipped kitchen, full bath with tub & shower, one bedroom with a double firm bed. Flat screen TV, comfortable double futon couch in living area and large lanai with hammock.

Linens , bath and beach towels, body wash, and dish products. Tri-fold mattress for that extra guest.

Guests will enjoy the sweet trade winds; being surrounded by orchids, ferns and native trees; listening to the sound of waves and venture a 5 minute walk to the ocean cliffs and view magnificent sun and moon rises out of the Pacific. Take a 4 1/2 mile hike to Shipman's/Ha'ena Beach.

During your stay take a 30 minute scenic drive up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at 4000 ft., the summit of the world's most active volcano, Kilauea. You can learn about our unique shield volcanoes and see how our islands are being created at the Jaggar Museum and Visitor Center. View ancient and active lava flows depending on activity and weather conditions. Some nights you can see the Kilauea lava 'glow' from the back lanai.

Tour the rim of the caldera at the summit and hike into a pit crater, then stroll through a 300 year old native rain forest and experience a lava tube. For the hungry hiker there are cafes, restaurants and a winery, all at Volcano Village, a charming community just outside of the park.

Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana village, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Don't miss FREE Live Hawaiian Music outdoors here every Wed. and Fri. night and enjoy local treats at the farmers market and food stands, featuring a variety including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there, you'll pass the historical Star Of The Sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing into the ocean!

Leisurely continue north along the coastline, there are many parks and breathtaking scenery. Experience exciting Zip Line Aventures North of Hilo, 5 total on the Big Island. You can often see the green sea turtles along the shore. At Pohoiki Bay you might catch some of the best surfers on the island. Fishermen launch their boats from the ramp here. Next you'll come to Ahalanui State Park. This is a must! Stay awhile, take off your shoes and relax in the warm waters.

This pond is heated by volcanic thermal vents. It is an ancient place of healing created and used for generations by Hawaiians. Once refreshed head towards Pahoa and take time to walk through Lava Tree State Park with it's fascinating tree molds and tranquil paths. Last stop is historic Pahoa town, a colorful community where you can dine or take out fresh fish, BBQ, Chinese, Italian, Mexican or Thai cuisine.

Include charming, eclectic Hilo Town in your itinerary. Second largest community in Hawaii. Explore Hilo's unique history on bay front at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander through the stands of the Hilo Farmers Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh, hot tamales and Filipino desserts! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruits to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach. Spot dolphins, whales and swim with turtles. Then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

I invite you to come and enjoy paradise!

About U`ilani

I am originally from Iowa and Leland is a Native of Hawaii, Army-Retired. We fell in love with the life style and beauty of the Big Island. Our wonderful Ohana, Ui'lani and Stan will enjoy assisting you. We hope that you will enjoy our Aloha and our home,

Mahalo, Elizabeth and Leland

U`ilani purchased this cottage in 2011

Why U`ilani chose Keaau

We chose beautiful Kaloli Point area because it's rural, safe, and friendly. Towns are easily accessible, but still has that small 'coastal community feel'.

What makes this cottage unique

It's always lush and green here! We are right in the middle of the best parts of the the Windward side of the Island. Beautiful Hilo to the North and tropical Kalapana to the South. There is so much history here in the 'Aina (land).

Tropical Paradise in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

What a pleasant surprise to drive up to this tropical paradise on a tropical rainy evening of our arrival. My husband and I planned to spend Thanksgiving with my mother but sadly she passed away prior to our visit. Since plans had been previously made we went ahead with them hoping the visit to the Big Island would aid in the healing process. We couldn't have selected a better place to meet those needs. We arrived late and very tired. Not knowing the area, we had difficulty finding the cottage in the darkness but the owner graciously stayed with us on our cell phone until we reached the property. The cottage is nestled in a safe, secluded and semi private neighborhood. The openness of the living room, dining area and kitchen, gave the ambience of living in the tropics. The warm breezes at night and the sound of the ocean waves just a block away made it even more serene and relaxing. In the morning we opened the curtains to catch glimpses of colorful birds perching from one tree to another. This became a daily adventure. The garden was filled with beautiful flowers and greenery. The only thing we needed to buy was groceries. Everything is cleanly maintained, comfortable and provided for in the cottage to include wifi. We were disappointed with the amount of rain the Island received this time of year (which only lasted a few minutes through the day), but didn't let it stop us from adventuring off to nearby towns and the Volcanoes National Park. In addition, we had the opportunity to fish off the rocks as waves of the Pacific crashed into the rocks. We can't say enough how we enjoyed ourselves and will definitely return. This cottage most certainly helped us at our time of loss. Very well affordable and worth it!

Beautiful, Quiet, Minutes from the Crashing Ocean! Everything I needed!

  • 5 of 5

Being from the Big Island but living on Oahu it is always nice to get out of the city and enjoy the country. Reservations went smoothly. I was able to luck out and book last minute. Response time was quick. The one bedroom house was on stilts and hidden by Ohia trees which gave much privacy. There was toothpaste, salt and pepper, cooking oil, tea bags, hair spray, and a couple of other odds and ends that was left over from previous renters which came in handy. I would not rely on them as it is dependent on what previous renters leave behind. The hammock on the lanai was a welcome end of the night with a glass of red wine and listening to the coqui frogs sing the night away. A cooler was provided as well as snorkel gear, a boogie board, and beach towels. Location was very convenient to the Volcano, hot springs, grocery and drug stores, and restaurants. I felt very safe there and I was a single woman traveling by myself. The home was well maintained and very clean on arrival and U'ilani was very helpful and present if needed for and advice or help. She made me feel very welcome and had a true Hawaiian spirit. Much Mahalos.

Owner's Response: Much Mahalo for your booking. We are so glad that there were things you could use that was left from the previous guests. The hammock, surrounded by the ohia trees and the sounds of the coqui frogs topped with a glass of wine sounds like a really nice & relaxing time. Please know that we do appreciate you sharing your personal experience and our home with anyone who may be looking for a place to stay while visiting the Big Island. We sure hope we get another chance to share our home with you again. As you are always welcomed back to "Simply Paradise - Hale Honu". Mahalo nui loa. Oh! we hope you found some place to start your business... Malama Pono Aloha, U`ilani

Perfect Getaway for Business or Pleasure Travelor!

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I stayed here for 4 nights in October 2016. The home felt very private with all of the trees surrounding, and felt like living in a treehouse. The neighborhood is one of the safest on the east side of Hawaii. We saw many people walking their dogs, etc. during the day time. When we first walked in, the space was very cute and cozy, but it seemed a bit warm. We showed up in the middle of the day when it is warmer outside and the windows were closed. There is a fan in the living room and a floor fan in the bedroom. Once the windows are opened, the breeze cools the house down quite a bit! This was the first time I have stayed somewhere with no A/C. Typically have the A/C on 72 during the day, and 71 at night. The rental probably felt about 74 degrees during the day and at night, when we were sleeping, we actually got a little cold (just using sheets) and had to grab the extra blanket for the bed. So it was probably about 70 degrees at night, which was great. The coffee maker worked great, water is provided for drinking, the shower worked well (hot water comes on fast and the water pressure was just right), and plenty of towels were provided for beach and for use in the house. The internet is cable high speed internet! I brought my computer to work a bit here and there during our stay. The internet was fast and reliable. I actually brought an HDMI cord and connected the tv to my laptop on a few occasions to have a second monitor and it worked perfectly. The house was very clean. There was not a dishwasher, which might be common in Hawaii (other rental we stayed at was the same way).. So you have to hand wash dishes, which wasn't a problem to us. It rained a few times when we were there, but I have heard that Hawaiian Paradise Park is one of the least rainy places on the east side of the island. It would rain off and on, and more at night times. The rain was refreshing. Love listening to the rain during the night time. The owner U'ilani is available by text, phone, or email. Very quick to respond if you need anything. The listing details are 100% accurate. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would stay here again!

Fantastic holiday house in rainforest surrounding

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house surrounded by nature and luscious rainforest like trees which provide a very relaxing and peaceful location.

It is an excellent place to stay while on holiday to check out Hilo and Kilauea volcano (having a car for the duration of the stay is necessary).

Shops are 20+ minutes away by car.

Its advertised description was accurate and doesn't do justice to this hideaway in amongst the beautiful nature of the Big Island.
