Overview

About the property

1 King, 2 Twins (plus full sized baby crib)

Built in 1896, this home retains all its historic charm yet has been brought up to date with an open concept main level and 21st century appliances. The location simply could not be better, as the home is on a quiet side street yet within a short walk of everything. It is only steps from a concentration of restaurants known as Restaurant Row, with tables out front by the sidewalk. Stanton Park, which is ideal for small children, is one block away. Union Station, from which virtually every sightseeing tour in Washington departs, is three blocks away, as are the Senate buildings, and immediately beyond them is the National Mall with major sights such as the Smithsonian museums and the National Archives.

Less than five blocks away:

- US Capitol

- US Supreme Court

- Library of Congress

- Folger Shakespeare Library

- Belmont-Paul Women's Equality museum

- Union Station

Within 1.5 miles:

- Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

- Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

- National Gallery of Art

- Smithsonian American Art Museum

- National Museum of the American Indian

- Hirshorn Museum (modern art)

- National Archives

- Verizon Center (Washington Wizards NBA team)

- Madam Tussaud's

- International Spy Museum

- Newseum

- US Botanical Garden

- National Building Museum

The home has been furnished for a family of four, but also has an optional twin-size and normal height inflatable bed for a fifth person. There is a crib, high chair, and stair gate for baby. It is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is quiet yet so centrally located that the sites are within walking distance, a huge plus since none of them has parking. You will live like a local, walking one block to the grocery store with the house shopping cart, or getting around on DC's bright red public bicycles, which you can pick up at a bike rack close to the house.

Your rental includes a free permit for street parking. However, due to our proximity to the major tourist attractions we recommend not renting a car. We are walking distance to Metro and to most of the major attractions. Should you need a rental vehicle for a day to visit out-of-town sites, there are rental car offices minutes from the house.

Although we are steps from Restaurant Row, you will find the house equipped with a cook's kitchen. Whether it is a coffee grinder, a blender for margaritas, or a selection of spices, you will find it on hand.

Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, a starter set of toiletries, etc. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

So how to proceed?

We recommend using the 'Request Booking' button, which will confirm availability and provide a detailed quote before you reach the screen on which you are asked to commit. We book with the $150 cleaning fee, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. All payments are self-service, via credit card or e-check using HomeAway's secure payments page. You do not need to provide us credit card information.

If we don't have your dates available, you may want to check our two other two-bedroom home, HomeAway property #339969.

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

Alec Smyth purchased this townhome in 2012

What makes this townhome unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Urban Oasis

  • 5 of 5

We found this gem in Capitol Hill at the last minute on the way out of Georgia with Irma making her landfall. Alec was prompt in accepting us as tenets and immediate with all the particulars. The townhouse was clean and charming. He greeted us and showed us the layout. It was in a great location to Union Station and many restaurants. It was a very reasonable, short uber ride to the Mall. We enjoyed our stay

Perfect vacation rental in Wash DC

  • 5 of 5

This house could not have been more perfect for my family of 5 (including 3 teenage boys). The house is an easy 10 minute walk to Union Station where we took the Metro each day to visit attractions throughout the city. We also caught a trolley at Union Station for an evening Monuments Tour (highly recommend). The house is also just a short walk to the Capitol Building.

The house itself has everything you might need and more - the kitchen is completely stocked, towels and toiletries, even umbrellas and rain ponchos!

The neighborhood is great and there are several restaurants and a market about a block away where we purchased some food and drink essentials.

Prior to our arrival, we received a detailed document with information about everything you'd want to know (the house, getting around the city, suggested attractions and tours, etc.). Really very helpful as we planned our trip.

Can't say enough great things about this rental!

Elegant, spacious, we'll equipped

  • 5 of 5

Really is as big as it looks or bigger! (One full bath, one half.) Had everything we needed--including umbrellas, maps, full kitchen. AC was quiet and effective. Owner provided excellent info about area and was very responsive to all inquiries. Interior stairs are a little steep! Highly recommended.

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our family of four. It was centrally located and within walking distance of the National Mall, Union Station, and the Capitol. The house was well equipped with all of the amenities we needed. The owner, Alec, is well organized and very responsive. He provided helpful information on the area, attractions, restaurants, etc before we arrived and was available to answer questions before and during our stay. I highly recommend this property.

Was perfect for my family and the location was ideal

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week away at this house - great location and the house had everything we needed. It's so close to Union Station and that gets you to anywhere in DC. We enjoyed having breakfast at the house and the kitchen had what we needed. Customer service was great as well - we kept hearing some high pitched noise in the kitchen and they sent someone out the next day to fix. Great place and we appreciate the memories we made!

The house is located on a quiet side street street only steps from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk, and one block from Stanton Park, which is ideal for small children. Union Station, the epicenter of tour excursions, is only three block from the house.

Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.

The Senate buildings are only three short blocks from the house, and beyond them is the National Mall with the principal tourist attractions of Washington.
