About the property

Historic Restored Home, 5 beds, 4 baths with antiques and modern conveniences

This gorgeous 1925 Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Revival design is newly designed with lovely antiques and is close to St. Augustine, Everpark Stadium, St. Johns River, The Shoppes of Avondale, Cummer Museum, parks, walking or bike trails, the beach, restaurants, and many family friendly activities. You will love my home in the Avondale Historical Neighborhood. My house is great for couples, friends, business travelers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets).

We welcome events such as weddings and showers. We also offer packages complete with event coordination designed especially for you with our Manager and Coordinator, Nikki Mays.

The property is furnished and includes dishes, pots pans, blender, coffee machine, washer and dryer, and other provided items like linens, towels, soaps, cleaning supplies, etc. A more extensive list is provided on the Home Away booking site.

At Canterbury House, we are very mindful about leaving a sanitary healthful place that our guests will always feel comfortable in during their stay. We therefore do use full size, 22 inch, expensive queen and twin adjustable electric air mattresses of the best quality available in our home. We top our beds with non-allergenic feather beds that are 3 inches or thicker. When guests have celebrated too much, or their children have accidents we can fully clean and disinfect the bedding in a manner that would not be possible with traditional mattresses and bed clothing. We have received comments from our guests that they have had no problems with the bedding and have enjoyed restful nights.

About Georgette Haverluk, Nikki May

Recently retired from LAUSD as a school administrator and National Board Certified Teacher, I found my second calling in restoring historical houses. I live in Long Beach, California at the shore when I am not building. I am an artist, avid sailor, love traveling, reading, cooking,my 3 doberman pinschers and several cats.

As a transplant from Montana, I grew up in Northern California, went to school at CSU Sacramento, and got my MBS at UCLA and Pepperdine. I am bilingual in Spanish and my partner Nikki and I love hosting guests at Canterbury House.

Georgette Haverluk, Nikki May purchased this house in 2016

Why Georgette Haverluk, Nikki May chose Avondale

Canterbury House is a beautiful property located across from where the Fishweir Creek flows into the St Johns River. It is not unusual to look out the front yard in the morning and see a egret fly by or listen to the mournful sound of an osprey calling to its mate from a backyard Oak Tree. Even the Canadian Geese control traffic and they waddle their young across neighborhood streets. We choose Avondale Historic District as it is one of the oldest and most prominent neighborhoods in the area. Driving down the street is a wondrous treat as you strep back into the Arts and Craft Period where influences of Frank Lloyd Wright, Gothic Revival, Bungalows, and Jacobethan Mansions abound. Why in the neighborhood, there is even Rochester House, a "haunted' mansion where Mary Todd Lincoln stayed! Huge parks abound and the river and marshes are just a short 5 minute walk across the street. Eclectic restaurants and hip shopping areas are found in the Shoppes of Avondale and Five Points. Downtown with Museums, Stadiums and Convention Centers is 10 minutes away. Don't forget the Farmers Market on Saturday where local artist and farmers sell their wares. For you golfers, there are quaint small courses minutes away or the prestigious Saint Johns Golf Course in nearby St. Augustine, America'd oldest city. Evermore Stadium is home to NFL's Jaguars, the Gator Bowl, rival Florida and Georgia State to mention only some of the legendary football battlegrounds sponsored here in Jacksonville. Surrounding Canterbury House, there is something for everyone and we welcome you!

What makes this house unique

Whether you are planning a family reunion, gathering old friends, or traveling for business, Canterbury House is the perfect place to stay. Boasting over 4000 square feet of living and entertaining space, there are antiques interspersed throughout the room including an art deco chandelier in the living room from Estonia, a Carnival Glass Pendent in the dining room, and 1920's crystal, and glass chandelier in the music room, Relax in one of the three en-suites with upgraded spa-like bathrooms, including the master suite with a hand carved queen bed made especially for a Mr. George Mitchell at the turn of the century located ground level and is wheelchair accessible. On the 3rd of four levels pick your choice of the beautiful Nanny's suite with an antique door from a local sacristy restored to a "barn style" door, the Yellow Room with an 100 year old sleigh bed, or the refreshing shaded Blue Room located in the down the hall. For quiet solitude, enjoy our largest suite up in the loft, surrounded by massive Oaks, and curl up with a book on the sofa or enjoy a quiet glass of wine in the sitting area. Canterbury House has a huge deck built around one of six century-old Oak Trees perfect which is for grilling and eating out side, or enjoy cocktails around Jacksonville's first water-infused fire pit in the back yard after a busy day of sightseeing. If you enjoy cooking, our state of the art gourmet kitchen is a chef's delight, complete with Induction stove, two-zone wine cooler, built in convection oven with steam microwave, dishwasher, disposer, and trash compactor. We at Canterbury House have thoroughly enjoyed restoring and renovating our home for your pleasure.

Beautiful Home - Very Spacious!

  • 5 of 5

I want to start off by saying how wonderful Georgette & Nikki are. They responded very quickly with any questions I had. Excellent customer service!

The house is gorgeous. Very spacious! The property is very well maintained. Plenty of room for the amount of people we had with us (6).

Anytime we are in the Jacksonville area again, we will definitely be staying at the Canterbury house.

Good location, bad beds

  • 4 of 5

9 of us spent three days at Canterbury and overall, we had a great stay. The only real negative that we all agreed on, were the air mattresses on the beds. They were extremely uncomfortable and all of us had a hard time getting a good night’s sleep,

On a positive note though, the house provided plenty of room for all of us and it was a great location. The biggest positive was the property manager, Nikki. Nikki was there to answer all of our questions as we led up to our stay and she met us at the house to give us the tour and make sure everything was ready for us, she even contacted me during our stay to make sure we were okay. She’s the best :-).

Charming historical home that needs attention to details

  • 3 of 5

Let me say first that this home is large and adequate but not comfortable. While the kitchen huge and updated, it is misleading to say the island seats more than 2 since there are only 2 stools.

The heat didn’t work downstairs.

I didn’t pack my blow dryer because your page says that there is one here.... there wasn’t.

The air mattress was miserable for me. For this reason alone I wouldn’t stay here again.

You need to add a least a luggage rack to the bedrooms if you aren’t going to furnish dressers. Some place beside the floor to put your suitcase.

I regretted that your tv line up didn’t include Fox News.

On the positive, very charming, good location ( I have lived in Avondale and know the area) spacious, and priced reasonably. I cannot comment on Niccki since we never saw her.

Owner's Response: First of all the guest in question would most likely not of had such difficulties had he responded to our repeated requests to meet him at the house for a walk-through, so we could provide the key to the details he claims is missing. There is heat in the house, however since he would not meet with our manager, (which is something we do 98% of the time) we were not able to show him how the heating systems work. Second of all, in addition to the seating in the kitchen, the adjoining dining room has a 92 inch table, with seating for eight. There is also a table in the family room which seats four and those chairs can be brought into the kitchen or dining room if needed. This group only numbered five so there were plenty of dining/seating arrangements and options available. As for the blow dryer, had the guest communicated with us or allowed us to give him the home tour, he would have been shown which bathroom drawers contain the blow dryers. Continuing on that theme, he also would have been enlightened to the ample storage racks, hangers and shelves located in the closets of each of the three suites and two bedrooms. As for the air mattresses, which is clearly outlined in our house rules and the contract he signed, we feature high-end 22 inch adjustable air mattresses in each of our suites and bedrooms. We offer these to protect our guest from the unsanitary conditions that arise with regular mattresses, when guests get sick or have accidents in bed. Regular mattresses can not be washed and sanitized after each visit, thereby cleansing them of bodily fluids, and other contagions as we do weekly with the type of mattresses found in our home. Also to be noted is that each mattress is topped with thick 2-3 inch pads, a pillow mattress and dressed with comforters as well as high end linens. Although each guest has their peculiar tastes and habits, at least twice a month we receive notice to the comfortable sleeping arrangements we feature. As I have mentioned, we make every attempt to greet our guests at the home upon arrival or within 12 hours of their check-in so we can answer any concerns and describe the location of the amenities throughout our large multi-level house. Perhaps if this guest had allowed us to greet and communicate with him, many of his concerns would have been addressed.

Great home for a family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

This home was the perfect place for our family from multiple states to get together and celebrate Thanksgiving! There is plenty of room for multiple families; and the kitchen is well-equipped and roomy for quicker meals throughout the day. The property manager and owners were super friendly and responsive. If we get together in Jacksonville again, this will definitely be our place!

Great house walking distance to food and drinks

  • 5 of 5

Nikki met us at the house to show us around. This was a great house in a nice location, only a few min walk to food and drink. The house has plenty of room and very clean. I rented this house for a short work trip. The only 2 things that we were bummed about were there was only 1 tv in the whole house and the internet was not the greatest. We work long overnight shifts so during our down time we like to all go our own way chill watching tv. But yes if we have to venture to that area again we would stay there again.
