About Randy and Betsy

Randy and Betsy are the owners of this cabin. The cabin is brand new, completed June 2012. It was built as a mountain retreat for our family and friends. We make our home in Littleton, Colorado a suburb of Denver, Colorado. Betsy originates from St. Louis, MO, but has spent most of her time in Colorado. Randy is from Phoenix, AZ but got to Colorado as fast as he could. We both enjoy this area for its beauty, quietness, the stars, cool air, and the outdoor activities.

Betsy is an artist and spends time painting at the cabin and in the area. She has her work displayed in the Courtyard Gallery in Buena Vista. Randy enjoys photography.

Randy and Betsy purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Randy and Betsy chose Nathrop

Betsy and I were first introduced to the Mt Princeton area in 2002 when we joined with four other families to build a small cabin within a mile of this one. We eventually decided to build a place of our own so we could spend more time in the mountains. Once you have stayed here you will agree that it is a special place!

What makes this cabin unique

We chose the property for this cabin because of the view and its proximity to a 14 acre meadow. Every morning we wake up and look outside to see what nature has for us. The valley is always changing with the clouds, the morning deer and the sunrise on the chalk cliffs providing something new. At night we anticipate sitting on the deck and looking up at the stars for an amazing display of the galaxy. Even though it feels like we are in the middle of the forest, we are minutes away from services and amenities.

Lovely vacation rental.

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the property. It was comfortable, well maintained and accurately represented in the pictures. It was peaceful and relaxing. We were close to major skiing locations and ghost towns as well. Would love to visit the area in the summer.

Beautiful location, relaxing, peaceful and fun!

  • 5 of 5

This house is just perfect for a family getaway. It is 5 minutes from the Hot Springs and 30 minutes from Salida. It was peaceful and relaxing and many wonderful memories were made. It was nice having a kitchen to cook meals and not have to eat out for every meal. The views are breathtaking. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Where do you live? Lawrence, KS

Scenery was amazing

  • 4 of 5

If you have a small group and looking for a quiet get away, this home will meet your needs. I have been using VRBO for the last 6 years. I would consider this house the perfect spot for maybe 2 couples or a family. Don't forget the kitchen is upstairs, so you will need to carry groceries up the stairs. The view from the deck is probably worth a million dollars.

Remember - No satellite or cable. I would recommend bringing blue rays.

Great Place - Amazing Location

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6 (kids ages 10, 9, 5 and 16 mo) just finished a 5 night stay. First off, if you've never been to Collegiate Peaks area - what are you waiting for? It's an amazing location with lots of outdoor activities. Randy's place was a great find for our family. Plenty of places to sleep. Very clean and all the items you'd expect to be there, were! The pool table and ping pong table were a very nice touch and provided hours of fun for our family. Overall, the place was amazing. However, for families, here are a few things to consider 1) There is no bathtub in either bathroom (only 1 shower), it made bath time for the little ones a little challenging 2) the primary living area is on the second floor, and the fear of falling down the hardwood stairs was a constant worry - bring your own baby gate 3) bring your own video content - there is no TV service; there were lots of DVDs to be had, but aside from Fantasia (which we watched about 16 times) there were no kids (animated) movies. I would highly recommend this place, and I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

The cabin is located in an area known as the Mt. Princeton area or the Chalk Cliffs area.

The Arkansas Valley region is a 'banana belt’, which keeps the temperatures from the extremes and limits heavy snow fall to elevations above 7,500'. This cabin is on the snow line, so snow depths are variable. Within minutes of the cabin you can hike, fish, 4-wheel, cycle, swim, cross country ski, raft, rock climb, and camp. For the more adventurous, hiking any of the 14teeners in the area is an accomplishment.

Everyone should take a trip down the Arkansas River at least once to experience white water rafting. Depending on the water level and type of trip there are trips for all levels from calmer waters to Class 5 water.

The Mt. Princeton Resort and Hot Springs is a popular destination with a hot springs swimming pool.

St Elmo ghost town is 12 miles up valley and is a great mountain drive and off-roading area in the summer.

Chalk Creek is a 10-minute walk and good for fishing.

Horseback riding is available near the Mt Princeton resort.

For unique restaurants and art galleries spend the afternoon and evening in Buena Vista 9 miles north or Salida12 miles south. There are several interesting bars in both towns.

A perfect weekend in this area would include our local favorites:

Explore St. Agnes falls: Drive 10 minutes up the valley and hike .5 miles to the base of the falls.

Eat breakfast at the Evergreen Café in Buena Vista.

Take home a painting from a local artist at the Courtyard Gallery in Buena Vista.

Go on an adventure with Noah’s Ark Rafting Company or another local outfitter.

Soak in the hot springs at the Mt. Princeton Resort or Cottonwood Hot Springs.

Take a scenic drive up to the ghost town, St. Elmo -- a trip back to the gold mining days.

Enjoy a gourmet dinner at the Laughing Ladies Restaurant in Salida or the Eddyline Restaurant & Brewery in Buena Vista.
