About the property

2 Bedroom, 2 Bath condo on the Folly River

This vacation home is a one-level, two bedroom, two-bath condominium in the gated Mariner's Cay complex in Folly Beach, South Carolina, USA. The home is situated directly on the Folly River and has great views of the river, the sunsets and the activity at the Mariner's Cay Marina. The screened porch overlooking the back yard and the marina is a great place for dining, reading and relaxing. The master bedroom opens to the porch as does the main living area. The entire condominium has just undergone complete redecorating and refurbishment with new floors inside, ceramic tile on the porch and new furnishings, including twin beds in the guest room.

The home is all on one level with only a short set of stairs from the parking area to the front door and another set off of the porch into the back yard. We love having direct access to the back yard and the marina area.

The home is well-maintained, was recently refurbished and redecorated and is nicely furnished with all of the expected conveniences including cable TV and DVD player.

The complex has two lighted tennis courts, a large pool and is a great place from which to launch your adventures -- kayaking, boating and fishing the river, riding bikes, surfing and long walks in and around Folly Beach are some of the favorite activities. The beach is less than a mile away by car, bike or walking. Historic downtown Charleston is a 15 minute drive.

About Scott Wood

Our family consists of Scott & Becky, plus two children, Emily (20) & Campbell (19). I am director with a technology company in the automotive industry.

We all enjoy sports and outdoor activities and like to take advantage of any outdoor opportunities wherever we travel -- running, biking and hiking are some of our favorites. Soccer (or football) is a favorite sport.

Scott Wood purchased this condo in 1995

Why Scott Wood chose Charleston Area

Folly Beach is absolutely the best all around beach town on the entire South Carolina coast. Check online for yourself, but whether you're a surfer, a family, a retiree, an outdoor enthusiast or just want to get a away, you are welcome at Folly Beach. From the Folly Pier to the local restaurants (Rita's, The Lost Dog, Loggerheads, the Surf Bar) to the great public parking and facilities, you can't have a better beach experience. We have been going to the area for over 30 years and have watched it grow up --- but have never considered going to any other beach town. It's not pretentious or stuffy like some of the 'resorts'. You can be yourself, come as you are and absolutely have the best time you've ever had at the beach.

What makes this condo unique

Our home is not on the beach, but near the beach and we wouldn't have it any other way. Over 30 plus years we've owned two properties in Mariner's Cay and think we have the best of both worlds. We not only can walk right over to the beach and be right in the middle of things if we choose, but we can be away from it all at the pool or on our screened porch. During the busiest of holiday weekends (Independence Day, for example) we can enjoy the beach, the people and the whole festive atmosphere as long as we like, but yet get away from the crowds when we choose. All of Folly Island can be full, but the gated community of Mariner's Cay is always serene and is the very best place to get away when you like.

Nice view

  • 4 of 5

I enjoyed the stay however it is not really within walking distance to town and certainly not the beach. Short drive. Only negative is the upstairs neighbors, they expected us to be quiet however at 5:30 each morning they were STOMPING around upstairs closing doors and running water. If you want respect, please give respect. We were on vacation and couldn't really enjoy the patio for fear of being reprimanded by these people. Maybe they should live where weekend rentals are not allowed. Condo was very nice and had all that we needed.

Condo was nice, people that are year round residents were very nice and welcoming!

  • 4 of 5

Condo was nice, but we really weren't there enough to make a difference. We would take off first thing in the morning, come back in time to take a shower for dinner, go out and eat and back late to bed. Screen door will slam in a skinny minute so please be aware of that so you don't disturb your neighbors. But all in all 4 50+ ladies had a great time on Folly! Look forward to doing again sometime.

SCREEN PORCH IS THIS UNITS BEST FEATURE

  • 4 of 5

This property has been updated and presents well . Attention is needed in the master bath as the shower door is hard to open once closed, especially from the inside. The great screen porch helped me overlook the kitchen bugs that are so typical in low lying areas such as this. We also didn't let the "grumpy old man" upstairs ruin our stay. The very first full day he approached by husband saying we had been slamming our sliding door and he wasn't going to have it. We certainly did not slam any doors, I think he was just looking for a confrontation and when he didn't get that he went away.

Great waterfront condo!

  • 4 of 5

We had an excellent stay here for the weekend. The place was clean, had all that we needed, and watching dolphins from the patio/porch was just fantastic! Was also just a short walk to the beach and pier! We will be back! Thanks

mariners cay folly beach

  • 1 of 5

I would not recommend this property for several reasons. First, the owner was very rude and obnoxious from the beginning. He didn't send any information until I called to remind him that I was due to arrive in a few days and then bristled when I asked for my refund which was due 48 hours after leaving. He kept reminding me that he was not a management company - clearly but he needs one. The condo was not kept up. Screen door to the back porch fell off its hinges which I tried to repair; towels and sheets, although clean, were the cheapest anyone could buy. Apparently there was a leak under kitchen sink and the bowl used to catch the water had not been emptied for who knows how long. Needless to say , a most unpleasant sight. The disposal was not hooked up and the closer on front screen door was not attached. The one redeeming asset was the view from the back porch overlooking the marina.

Owner's Response: I would have replied sooner, but only now saw this note from the renter. VRBO renters rarely leave reviews and no one ever has issues and I don't go over the reviews as they come in. If there are things that need attention I get a call while the renters are at my place and they are resolved. The A/C went out once, the ladies called, I had it fixed. That's how it works. I don't get the "complaint session" a month after the stay. I have 60+ great reviews on other sites. The guest didn't seem to understand she was renting a private home from the homeowner. Not a real estate company. Not a hotel. I am not those. You are renting from the owner. If you want a different experience, you need a realty company that churns out worn out beach houses. I am happy to pass along the names of several of those companies. This condo is the nicest in the entire complex. I have been in others that are set up for rentals only. They are not nice. We use it personally and only began renting it in the last few years. Towels, sheets and other items are all fine. Check the other reviews. When you own a condo you pay a regime fee and the exterior of the building is the responsibility of the regime, including the screen door. Other renters reported the screen door to me, I reported it to the management company, they scheduled repairs. That's how it works. I had actually seen it begin to come apart myself and expected it to go any time with use. I am always wary of new users --- join VRBO in Sept., rent in Oct., complain in November. I am now not renting to anyone without a rental history and a fully completed profile, including photo. Do not rent expecting to be handled like a call center at a hotel. I will respond, but again, this is a private home that I manage from afar. It is not the only thing I do. It was not purchased to be a rental but is my family's vacation home. Please understand that with homeowner owned, managed rentals you may get a bit of a different experience. If you need a place to stay near Charleston, understand what renting a private home means and have any questions, feel free to reach me.

This two bedroom condo, which was recently refurbished with all new flooring, decor and furniture is the nicest rental in the entire Mariner's Cay complex. Most of the units in the complex are 2 level town homes, but this unit is a flat and you will enjoy not having to climb the stairs to the upstairs bedroom. Instead, the master bedroom opens up on onto the large screened porch with its ceiling fans and new tile floors and, of course, the beautiful views of the Folly River and the Mariner's Cay Marina. We have owned the home for 17 years and this is the first year we have chosen to rent it. You have full access to the two lighted tennis courts, a large pool plus it's a great place from which to launch all of your adventures -- kayaking, boating and fishing the river, riding bikes, surfing and long walks in and around Folly Beach are some of the favorite activities. The home is equipped with all of the expected conveniences including cable TV and DVD player. The kitchen is fully equipped, as well.
