Welcome to La Ginestra, a newly renovated cottage nestled inside Tuscany’s most romantic landscape, southern Siena Province. It’s an exceptional independent house for two, offering privacy, a perfect location, and stellar views.

The house is located on a ridge between the Val d’Orcia and the Val di Chiana, Tuscany’s evocative and classically characteristic valleys. It overlooks distant and fascinating hill towns, the occasional vineyard, pasturing sheep, orchards and rolling hills. It sits on an acre and a half of olive and fruit trees and produces its own olive oil. In an undiscovered part of Tuscany, untrammeled and off the beaten path, yet close to Tuscany’s hot spots, La Ginestra is nestled halfway between Florence (1¾ hours) and Rome (2 hours), and is a little over an hour’s drive from Siena. La Ginestra is an easy drive away from some of Italy’s most revered sights, mostly through breathtaking countryside.

We produce our own olive oil that the 155 olive trees on the property present us with. The Leccino and Frantoio varietal olives, from which this fine Tuscan oil is made, are harvested from trees on our property located in the southern portion of Siena Province, on the outskirts of the tiny medieval village of Celle Sul Rigo, an hour's drive south of Siena. La Ginestra's 155 olive trees are located on a ridge between the Val D'Orcia and the Val di Chiana, two of Tuscany's most classically characteristic and beautiful areas. It lies twelve miles from the slopes of Monte Amiata, the extinct volcano that is the highest mountain in southern Tuscany, and which still fuels local thermal springs. The elevation at La Ginestra is 1740 feet, optimum altitude for the production of Siena Province's best, low acidity oils. Our 45+ year old trees have produced oil that is fruity with a peppery finish.

Our latest November harvest was transported to the local "frantoio", which produced our extra virgin, cold pressed and unfiltered oil. Early harvests such as this one enhance the quality of the oil, where a smaller yield is the result, and where quantity is sacrificed for quality.

La Ginestra, (named for the wonderfully fragrant yellow flowered plant that perfumes the Tuscan air all summer long), is also the home of Richard and Kelly Keir. It is situated near the thermal waters and baths of San Casciano dei Bagni. We fell in love with Italy in 2001 and began our search for a "heaven on earth." This quiet and undiscovered corner of Tuscany affords all we were looking for: wonderful local food and wine, unparalleled views of surrounding medieval hill towns, art and history galore and best of all, the opportunity to produce our own olive oil.

La Ginestra has one bedroom and bath, and is fully equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. There are terracotta floors throughout, and French doors in both the living room & bedroom that open to the outside, where you can enjoy a meal or a glass of wine on one of the two patios. The modern, sleek and fully equipped kitchen has a professional style stove, quartz counter tops, a dishwasher, and a full sized refrigerator with freezer. The bathroom’s shower features locally quarried travertine.

The house’s additional amenities include a fireplace, free Internet..(USB port on your device required), There is also free WIFI access at the grocery store Bottega L'Appalto, a 2 minute walk from La Ginestra. The grocery store also offers our guests a 10% discount on all goods. Simply present the store with the business card they have given La Ginestra to receive your discount. On airport the network name is Appalto and the access password is: 18novembre2013 for the WIFI connection. There is also another free WIFI location at the restaurant Chiara di Luna..a 4 minute walk from La Ginestra. On airport click on chiaro di luna1 and then the password which is: chiarodiluna2013. An Italian cell phone is provided, CD player with CDs, TV, washer/dryer, barbeque, iron, ironing board and hair dryer. There are area maps & guidebooks on restaurants, museums, shopping, walking & biking trails, and sights.

There is an outdoor bathtub with hot and cold water with a spectacular view for you to enjoy while soaking in the tub.

The house offers privacy without isolation. The closest village, a five-minute walk, is the charming medieval hill town Celle Sul Rigo, pop. 400. It has been singled out for its wine, olive oil and beauty. Celle offers dining options that range from simple trattorias to full scale fine dining. The village also provides a bakery, butcher shop, pharmacy, grocery stores and a post office. There is also a Emergency Response facility with ambulance and first responder service a few blocks away.

San Casciano dei Bagni, a five-minute drive, is one of the area’s most beautiful hill towns. It is an elegant village that is a mecca for artists and writers who flock to its quiet environs. It has been acclaimed as one of the 'Borghi più belli d'Italia', one of the loveliest villages in Italy.

Nearby flow some 40 thermal springs fueled by Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano and southern Tuscany’s highest mountain. The area is famous for its lovely therapeutic spas and the villages built around them. San Casciano dei Bagni’s Fonte Verde is rated one of the top spas in Europe.

The entire area is a treasure trove of hill towns, art, and history. Wine and food range from the simple to the sublime. Walking trails abound. The region is dotted with Etruscan sites for history buffs. There are excellent roads for biking and trails for horseback riding. There is a wonderful public swimming pool in Sarteano, 20 minutes away.

Year round, the nearby villages hold festivals that include music, food, and medieval pageantry. Celle sul Rigo holds an annual Sagra dei Pici, celebrating the local hand made pasta.

La Ginestra’s elevation (530 meters or 1740 feet) keeps temperatures cooler in the summer than the towns found in the valleys below. The changing seasons all offer their own magic.

Train service is at Chiusi, 25 minutes away, a hub that connects to all parts of Italy. Car rental agencies are within one block of the station. Chiusi is in close proximity to the A1 autostrada to Rome, Florence, and Milan.

There is no smoking allowed inside La Ginestra.

About Richard Keir

We are a newly retired American couple from Carmel, CA. I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for 27 years. I was on board from the beginning of its construction and really enjoyed my job.

My wife was in the restaurant business for many years, most recently as office manager at The Restaurant at Mission Ranch in Carmel. She also loved her job, but was ready to let go of the stress.

I speak English, Spanish and Italian.

Richard Keir purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Richard Keir chose Siena Province

We've been coming to Italy since 2001, when we first fell in love with it. We bought an apartment in Varenna, Lake Como in 2004 and La Ginestra in 2010. We love Lake Como but Tuscany offers an entirely different environment. We enjoy the history, culture, architecture, food and wine and above all, the warmth and generosity of the Tuscan people.

What makes this cottage unique

We bought La Ginestra after a long search for a cottage in the country. We finally found this independent house with beautiful, panoramic views. Its 155 olive trees, many fruit trees and acreage were just what we were looking for. It provides privacy with village amenities a five-minute walk away. Also the fireplace, landscaping and its 2 patios add charm. La Ginestra's proximity to Rome, Florence and Siena was of great importance in our decision to purchase it.

Reviews

Here are some of the things our guests are saying...

Casa la Ginestra is a real gem! This is by far the most comfortable vacation rental I have had the pleasure of staying at. The location is ideal; close to many charming villages but remote enough to offer peace and privacy. The house its self is superbly remodeled, offering simple yet elegant furnishings, a gorgeous and functional kitchen, and all the modern amenities that a discerning traveler could ask for. It's obvious that Casa la Ginestra's owner takes pride in this home, its location, and the warm and welcoming local populace. If you're looking for a home to rent in the Tuscany region then look no further. You won't be disappointed by Casa la Ginestra!

We arrived at La Ginestra to a beautiful sunset followed by a full moon. The property overlooks the Tuscan hill country and the on site olive grove. The house is very well appointed and private, perfect for a romantic getaway or for a honeymoon. It is a short walk into the small town for groceries or a nice lunch. We strongly recommend going to Daniella's in San Casciano Dei Bagni as well as Fighine, a small renovated Castle with a Michelin-starred restaurant (chef antontio previously at La Pergola in Rome). Amazing food at both locations! Also not to be missed is FontaVerde, the Tuscan resort and spa. La Ginestra was an amazing home, minutes away from so many beautiful, ancient towns...we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and we will return!

Exceeded expectations

Left on Jun 28, 2016 for a stay in Jun 2016

Arriving at the cottage took our breath away with the intimate private garden setting overlooking the olive orchard and beyond to the expanse of shouldering Tuscan hills and valleys and the bucolic villages, fields, and sheep farms. The cottage itself is tastefully decorated, clean, and well appointed with every convenience. Richard and his manager Maurizio together were attentive, prompt, and hospitable, providing detailed, helpful information on the cottage and the area sufficient to stay and explore for months. Within hours we were talking about coming back as soon as possible.

Perfetto!

  • 5 of 5

Since this was our second trip, Maurizio gave us the “short briefing and welcome” which was just perfect as we remembered how helpful he was on our first stay and we came right from Rome airport! For tired American travelers, we thoroughly appreciated the comfortable bed, well-appointed kitchen, great shower and romantic fireplace and outdoor tub (a great addition!). Thanks for all the details to keep Americans happy in Italy while feeling like locals! Much appreciated Richard! Love the non-tourist but central location and our ability to walk and wander from a very charming home.

Home away from home, maybe better...

  • 5 of 5

When traveling we generally do our best to "live like a local"... We try to get way from touristy places and attractions. Italy is one of the most visited countries on the planet, so if you want your space, you have to work for it (a little). We planed our trip to Italy around spending some time away from the crowds and boy is the southern part of Tuscany the answer!! But that doesn't mean you have to rough it, That's where La Ginestra comes in: An amazing little oasis located in the middle of one of the most spectacular places on earth.

The house itself is a typical country cottage you would expect to find on a hillside, but it has been recently and thoroughly renovated. Fantastic fit and finish in every detail. And full amenities; this is a house you can LIVE IN. Stainless steal kitchen, dishwasher, washer/dryer, fireplace..... The furnishings were ample and comfortable. Everything was clean and fresh.

The location is another great plus (for us anyway) Tucked away in a tiny Tuscan hill town, once we arrived at the house I understood why Richard insisted on meeting us in the next town over. Even with GPS you would be unlikely to find it yourself... It was wonderful just to be there, but also to explore the Marama by car.... within an hour there are hill towns, hot springs, Etruscan ruins and great hiking trails etc...

And let me tell you about your hosts; Richard and Kelly. They clearly love this house and stay there when not graciously hosting us.... Their love is evident in the personal touches around that house, the furniture they've collected, etc. (but not so personal as to be uncomfortable). We were fortunate enough to be met by Richard himself, who provided a very thorough explanation of the house and its features and procedures. Kelly's contribution (again VERY thorough) was a binder of information for your visit. I think you could stay for a year and not exhaust the suggested places to visit and to eat....

If you have gotten so far as to be looking at vacation rentals in Tuscany, then we know you too want to get away from the tourist bustle. We highly recommend Richard and Kelly's wonderful cottage. It is perfect for a couple and very romantic....

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind words. You certainly described our house well and our intention to provide a comfortable, private environment. As you say, we consider this our home away from home and have outfitted it accordingly. We love our stays at La Ginestra and never tire of the many medieval hill towns to visit, foods to eat and most of all, the Italian people to interact with. We have been coming to Italy since 2001 and it just keeps getting better and better!

I'd give this 10 STARS

Planning our stay at La Ginestra was smooth from start to finish. Richard was exceptional in all the arrangements. Maurizio happily welcomed us and gave us a magnificent tour of San Casciano dei Bagni and Celle Sul Rigo. He was very thorough is providing us with all the special places that made our stay fantastic! The gentleman at the grocery store was delightful and so very helpful, also the young man who assisted us at il Poggio (specialty market) plus the restaurants staff and organic food/wine were superb.

All the above and we haven't even begun to share our experience at La Ginestra! It's really difficult to describe how incredibly beautiful their home and location was for us. The kitchen had everything one would need or want plus the view of the olive grove right out the window. The CD's were lovely to listen to in the evening and the bedroom provided a most excellent night of sleep with a comfortable bed & pillows. I liked the personal touches and the handmade bed frame. Richards information and the other reviews are very accurate. It was truly awesome from beginning to end. (We wished that we had allowed a couple more days/nights there)

Tuscany Delight!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Ginestra for three nights and it was absolute heaven! We booked at the very last minute and Richard was so accommodating and in great communication from beginning to end. The photos are beautiful, but believe it or not, they don't capture the immense beauty of the home and surroundings. The home is so lovely and you can tell Richard has put in so much love and work into it to make his guests stay an unforgettable experience. The views are spectacular and it was so nice to sit outside, enjoy the view with some Prosecco, eat on the terrace area while enjoying the breeze, and even take in an outside bath! The kitchen is well equipped and has everything you will need to cook up a great meal. The bathroom shower is great, with plenty of hot water and there is plenty of space for all your toiletries. The bedroom has a fantastic view of the Tuscan countryside and it is just unbelievable. There aren't enough positive adjectives to describe this place and it was exactly what we needed to get away from all the tourists in Siena and Florence! The location is private, quiet, and Celle Sur Rigo and the surrounding towns are fun to explore. Each day we visited a new town, went to the thermal baths, wine tasting, and inside the various duomos. It was a quick 3 nights and we will be back to stay longer.

Maurizio, the property manager, was great and also in great communication with us throughout. He met us in a neighboring town, took us to the local grocery store, made a reservation at an excellent restaurant, and had lots of great tips. Richard also has an extensive notebook at La Ginestra with tons of helpful information about the area, restaurants, hikes, vineyards, thermal baths, things to do, etc. I only wish we could have done them all! It just means we will need to go back and stay longer. Thank you for an unforgettable few days in Tuscany!

Beautiful, private, quiet... a perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this property during our anniversary trip and we could not have asked for a better experience. The little villa is beautiful - exactly as shown in the photos. It is clean and comfortable; although we were in Italy during a heat wave the location cooled down to a beautiful temperature at night and we never had problems sleeping. The views are astonishing. It is supremely private but so close to the little town nearby (Celle Sur Rigo), which has everything one could need and a welcoming, sleepy attitude that kept us feeling relaxed and at home. It is a great location from which to explore a myriad of hilltowns in the area. Maurizio, who showed us to the property and around the town, was incredibly friendly and helpful, providing many great suggestions on where to eat and things to do in the area. This place really feels off the beaten path and the majority of tourists we saw were Italian, giving the sense that you're seeing a part of Italy many don't ever experience. The wifi and satellite TV did not work while we were there but they were working to have that repaired. Who wants to watch TV in Italy anyway? And there was free wifi at the grocery store in town, which was easily accessible. We cannot recommend this property highly enough and will definitely be back the next time we are in Italy.

Owner's Response: I could not have described the La Ginestra experience as well as Kate did. I'm glad that La Ginestra is appreciated by others as much as my wife and I do. I thank Kate for having taken good care of La Ginestra. Maurizio, our property manager, also enjoyed meeting and being with you. I look forward to the day I hear from you again requesting another stay in our beautiful corner of Tuscany.

Tranquility in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days at La Ginestra in July 2015. The views of the surrounding Tuscany countryside and the peacefulness of the small Celle Sul Rigo hill town were just what we needed after being in a large city. La Ginestra is tasefully appointed and has all the amenities you need including high quality appliances and kitchen items for cooking a wonderful Tuscan meal. Celle Sul Rigo and nearby San Casciano have a bakery, butchers and small grocery stores where you can get everything you need. The people we met in town and in the surrounding villages were friendly and welcoming. Also, the local restaurants were excellent. La Ginestra is a perfect place for visiting many hill towns of Tuscany. We hope to return again soon.
