The Atkins Bay Cottage is a classic quaint Maine cottage right on the picturesque Atkins Bay. The Atkins Bay Cottage is a beautifully waterfront property which is completely remodeled and meticulously cared for with spacious lawns and gardens. There is a large deck overlooking Atkins Bay and Popham Beach State Park.
The cottage has over 100 feet of water frontage which is ideal for numerous activities; a couple of our favorites is clamming and kayaking. At low tide the cottage has some of the best clamming in the area. Catch your own dinner (fishing and clamming licensees are available at the town office for a nominal fee), and have a great clam bake with family and friends.
The first floor of the house has hardwood floors throughout. The living room has a glass door that opens up onto a spacious deck overlooking the bay. There is a nice new for 2019 family room. Right off of the living room there is a beautiful glass sunroom with a private sitting area. There is a dining room and sitting area adjacent to the living room. The kitchen has everything you'd need with top of the line appliances and granite counter tops. A new first floor bedroom was added for 2019 as well with a queen size bed. A full bathroom completes the first floor.
The second floor contains three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom suite has a queen size bed and beautiful bathroom. The master bedroom also has a balcony overlooking the water. The second bedroom has a full size bed. The third bedroom also has twin bunk beds. There is a stackable washer and dryer in the master bedroom.
The Atkins Bay Cottage is ideally located on the Popham peninsula. The cottage is within minutes of one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast, Popham Beach State Park (The Atkins Bay Cottage comes with a Popham Beach Park pass which gets you into the park for free).
The location of the Atkins Bay Cottage at Popham Beach makes an ideal “home base” for any vacation you choose. For those who “need to get away from it all” you can spend your entire vacation in the Popham Beach area. Guests can lazily relax on our decks overlooking the bay, or perhaps take a short stroll to the water front for swimming, kayaking fishing and clamming. Be sure to keep a look out for eagles, loons, cormorants and seals! A Maine vacation must is fresh seafood for a lobster or clam bake. There are plenty of places in the local area to by fresh seafood.
History: For those of you who enjoy more history and more activity, Popham and its surrounding areas provide just that. Popham is one of the earliest English settlements during Colonial America being settled in 1607. Though it was unsuccessful it led to later settlement along the Maine coast. Popham State Beach is a beautiful 500 acre beach of white sand. It is definitely worth a visit. When the tide is out, you can walk across the beach to a nearby island. Fort Popham, from the Civil War years is close by and is ready to be explored.
The nearest city to Popham is Bath, “the City of Ships”. Maine’s first ships were built here in this area around 1607-1608. If you are interested in shipbuilding the Maritime Museum offers a glimpse into Maine’s boat building past.
Shopping and exploring: Quaint shops and restaurants make Bath a fun day trip. Boat rentals can be found in Bath for touring or fishing the Kennebec River. Golf courses are also in the area. To the north of Bath is Boothbay Harbor. It is another excellent day trip for vacationers! It has shops, restaurants and antiques. Whale watching, Puffin watching and lighthouse boating excursions are available at the wharf. Brunswick, another historic town nearby offers shopping, restaurants, Bowdoin College and the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum. L.L.Bean’s flagship store is located south in Freeport. It is opened 24 hours a day and is a good place to go on rainy days. Freeport also has many name brand outlets. Portland is about an hour away and has many historic sites, shopping and great restaurants as well.
