About Owner/Manager

Joy and Larry Kleefeld: Owning a piece of paradise in Hawaii has been a lifelong dream of ours and we are very happy to share our vacation home with you on your next Hawaiian vacation. We have 6 children, and 7 grandchildren. Joy is involved with patient care at a local hospital. Larry is a chiropractor, looking at retirement on September 15, 2017. We are hoping to spend a good part of the year in Kona after retirement. We enjoy spending time with each other, family and friends, and our avid cyclists and snow sport enthusiasts.

For us Hawaii is a very special place. With the ocean, spectacular sunsets from the lanai, sightseeing and water activities including snorkeling, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing, Kona is an easy choice.

We chose Kailua-Kona with its unique weather, dry climate, beaches and recreation including scuba diving, snorkeling, boogie boarding and surfing. It is well known for the Iron Man Triathlon.

This was a perfect fit for us as we needed a 2 bedroom place close to downtown Kona we had a large group of 4 adult and 4 kids every one had a place to sleep. We didn’t spend a lot of time in the condo its Hawaii the location allowed every one to have many options, use the pool on site, walk to a beach, shop in town, or load into the car and explore the Big Island. The owners were very helpful and have a nice unit would love to stay again.

Great condo & location

We enjoyed our stay here in Kona. There was plenty of room for 3 adults to sleep and enjoy hanging out in the condo during the day. The location is amazing for close walking to all the great shops & Iron man beach in Kona.

Beautiful Condo in the Heart of Kona

We can't say enough about our vacation to Kona! This Condo was perfect! You can't beat the location! It was next to many restaurants and shopping! We loved the ability to walk to Ali'i Drive for shopping and food. The owners were easy to work with and VERY accomodating! They gave us many suggestions on their favorite restaurants and beaches that soon became our favorites! Their condo is beautifully decorated, clean, and very well maintained. It had everything that we needed: beach towels and chairs, ice chests, snorkel gear, and boogie boards. We have stayed at many VRBOs and this supercedes any other. Our 6 and 3 year old asked if we could stay one day at the condo so they could play and swim at the pool. They loved the onsite pool and hot tub. The lanai was a fun place for morning coffee, dinners, and evening card games! The kids especially loved when the Mongoose would run across their path. The kitchen had everything we needed for meals on nights we stayed in. Thank-you to Joy and Larry for opening up your home to us! We are already planning our next trip to the Kona Seaflower next Summer!

Owner's Response: So happy you enjoyed your stay. Our favorite restaurant for breakfast is Lava Java. It's a short walk from the condominium and the dolphins are usually jumping in the early morning. Mother and Son Getaway - Best Vacation!!

My mother and I stayed at the Kona Seaflower for a week and a half during the month of August and it was by far the best trip I have been on. The cozy 2 story 2 bath condo worked perfect for us. The location is important whenever we select a place. This condo was central to restaurants, bars, beaches, and shops. The condo was clean and decorated quite nicely. Being on the top level of the complex gave us a great view of the ocean and cruise liners when they sailed bye or docked for the day. It was great to sit out on the lanai and drink our coffee and chat about what exciting things we were going to do for the day. I have been to all the islands and the main island is the island that I keep coming back to, specifically Kona. It's something about the area, locals, and the relaxing environment. Internet is a must for me and I was able to log onto the Wifi and work a couple hours including Skype calls and web-Ex meetings with no issues from the condo, which is very important to me. Their amenities were stocked and we were able to cook a couple dinners at the condo and stay in and watch movies. It can get warm at nights, but that's typical of the Hawaiian weather but as long as you open the windows and keep the fans on it cools down.

I recommended the condo to a buddy, who traveled with his mom, dad, sister, and niece (5 people) and they also enjoyed their visit. From what I hear they built a great relationship with the owners of the condo and were impressed with Joy and Larry's communication and openness.

Lastly I use and browse through Home Away, VRBO, and HomeToGo when planning my vacations and I must say that the couple that is managing this property was by far one of the best I have worked with. Their process is streamlined and efficient and made it easy to book. All our questions were answered whether it be email or text and they were always available for chit chat. I see that they take pride in their rental and want everyone's experience to be memorable. For anyone who is looking at staying on the main Island, please consider Joy and Larry Kleefeld's Kona Seaflower.

Thank you for an amazing trip, my mother and I had a fantastic and memorable time. See you real SOON!

This was our first time to Kona and this condo was perfect, in so many ways. After flying in to Kona, it’s a short drive and the condo is very easy to find. Our first impression was how nice the entire complex is and the overall grounds are well manicured and clean. Parking was easy with the dedicated stall. Entering the condo, we immediately noticed how nice the interior decorating is and it was immaculate inside. The condo layout is great with the downstairs bedroom and the bathroom directly next to it. The upstairs loft is large and has its own full bathroom. Hint: open up all the top level windows for better circulation, the long pole to open the windows was in the closet. The living room is good sized and the sofa and love seat were brand new. There is a television however we never watched it because we were too busy doing other activities. The internet WiFi worked perfect and we had no issues with connectivity. The kitchen is well stocked and is supplied with everything you need to prepare meals. Of our 10 nights we cooked 7 nights and a few breakfasts. For us, cooking at the condo actually made the stay more enjoyable as we like to cook and visit. Eating outside on the lanai was very enjoyable also. There is plenty of openness between the kitchen and the living room for being social. Hint: when leaving the airport, stop at Costco on the drive in to Kona and stock up on food. During our stay we ran several loads of laundry and the stackable washer and dryer work well. As far as amenities, the condo has everything you need to enjoy a Hawaiian vacation. The downstairs bedroom closet is full of beach toys, boogie boards, beach towels, beach chairs, an ice chest, and even snorkel equipment. I am an avid swimmer and I used the mask, snorkel, and fins several times. It was easy because we left the beach toys in the trunk of our car so we had it on hand if the situation arose during our travels. THE LOCATION OF THE CONDO IS PERFECT! The downtown Kona is only a few blocks away which has all types of quaint shops, the large farmer’s market, restaurants, bars, and night life. Larger retail stores are very close too. We walked everywhere and even had some late nights “out on the town” not once was there a safety concern. We are very active and were always on the go exploring the entire island. There are several amazing beaches in close proximity to the condo. We had the most amazing vacation mainly because the condo felt like home.

Good location, but property needs some upgrading...which I understanding is going to happen.

The property is located about 2 blocks (walking distance) to the King Kamehameha resort, which has a nice sandy cove beach. The Hapuna Beach shown in the pictures I saw advertising this property is over 30 miles away, up the highway.

We found, as others have already noted in other reviews of this property, that the upstairs loft bedroom is unusable in summer weather. Others have stated that's because hot air rises...well, that's only part of the problem. The problem is that there is no insulation between the asphalt shingles on the roof (which is exposed to the intense tropical sun) and the upstairs ceiling so the heat from the sun makes the upstairs bedroom an oven set on 'broil'. Turning on the upstairs ceiling fan just exacerbates the problem. Without the fan the hot air next to the ceiling stays up there. With the ceiling fan on that hot air is disbursed and heats up the entire condo, especially the upstairs room. Other than those few days during the stay when we had either a late rain or an exceptionally cool and overcast day, we simply could not use the upstairs bedroom. It was just too hot to sleep. I have had extensive emails with the owner about this and he said he already had plans to add insulation. Also, the downstairs pull out sofa was worn out. If I were to return, I'd first ask if those had been corrected before booking.

Another problem, which is really a criticism of VRBO and _all_ owners who advertise on VBRO (not just this one), is the characterization of their properties based upon how many people it "sleeps." All the owners just count up the number of beds, of any size and including rollaways and pull-outs, and multiply by 2, and then say that's how many the unit "sleeps". While that _might_ be ok for 1 night in a motel, for a vacation rental I want to know how many people the unit _accommodates_! Here, yeah, there's 2 beds and a pull out, so yeah, that's 3 "beds" and yeah 3 x 2=6, but there really isn't enough space for more than 4 people to sit down and eat a meal together, for example. VRBO should have owners identify the size and type of each bed instead of just saying "sleeps x." Also, all owners should be asked to give a estimate of the number the unit can reasonably _accommodate_ (i.e., not just for sleeping) to give a better idea of what's being offered & to aid comparisons with other offerings.
