Overview

About the property

2+ bed, 1 bath with 360 degree Mountain/Ocean Views

The most private and breathtaking spot in the Cowichan Valley! This vacation getaway is the only building on a 40 acre property surrounded by beautiful Douglas Fir and Arbutus forest. Feel like you have truly gotten 'away from it all', but stay within a 15 min drive of Duncan and Lake Cowichan.

We offer a completely unique and eco-friendly rental as a welcome alternative to the usual options. Learn that the ultimate in 'eco-friendly' can also be beautiful, contemporary, and comfortable. This custom home was built with local, natural, and sustainable materials and is completely 'off-grid'. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to stay in a 'cob' home. Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, and straw - it's what the exterior walls are made of, and they hold up the roof without a single stick of wood! Of course, our home is highly engineered and code-approved - one of the very few of it's kind in North America! Whether you're looking for something eco-friendly, unique, private, or just beautiful with breathtaking views this home is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.

Accommodations include two bedrooms with queen size beds, as well as a pull-out double/queen sofa bed. The beds have eco-foam mattresses, down duvets, and bamboo and organic cotton sheets. The bathroom includes a shower and separate water-closet. The contemporary kitchen has 13 ft ceilings and the most energy-efficient appliances on the market. The living room features a beautiful curved cob bench and rammed-earth open burning fireplace for warmth and atmosphere. All the home's finishes are made with natural materials, so those with sensitivities can breathe easy, and everyone can feel good about staying in a healthy place without harmful toxins.

For your outdoor enjoyment, there is a deck and patio table just outside the dining room's double doors, which can be opened up for one large indoor/outdoor eating area. There is also a bbq and fire pits, for when the season allows. Our property connects with Cowichan Valley Provincial Park and it's many hiking trails for endless exploration from the top of the Bluff to the River bottom.

About Tonya or Leon

We are both originally from the prairies, and moved to the west coast in 2004. We have busy lives and jobs in Victoria, but have spent all of our free time over the last 2 years building and finishing this eco-home!

Tonya or Leon purchased this house in 2010

Why Tonya or Leon chose Vancouver Island

Over our last 8 years living on Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley has always been our favourite place to get away to; whether for a day of food and wine tours, or hiking and exploration, or just some relaxation in a beautiful setting. It encompasses everything that we love so much about the west coast and we have never tired of things to do and see in the area.

When we decided to build the most eco-friendly vacation home possible, we searched around the entire lower half of Vancouver Island to find the perfect spot. It had to be a spot with a lot of space and privacy and beautiful views to showcase the best of the valley, not a nearby sub-division or the possibility of one in the future. It was important for us to be able to offer guests an experience where they truly feel they have escaped everyday life. These things were not easy to find on an island like this which is such a popular place to live and visit (and rightly so!). When we found Stoltz Bluff, we knew it was just the right spot from the very beginning. We hope you visit and experience some of the same magic we have felt there.

What makes this house unique

This home is absolutely one of a kind. The two of us designed and built it ourselves, along with it's off-grid systems. The story of this home is a long and adventurous one! It has had it's trials and joys, and we are very happy to have made it through to the end. We have done an immense amount of learning and research over the last two years and are now excited to share that knowledge and our story with others. We hope to hear from you and will be happy to tell you more and answer your questions. Our website and blog tell the story of our building experience, so please visit it for even more information (may be 'under construction').

And all in a setting that is completely ECO Friendly AND comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

Stoltz Bluff ECO Retreat is the most unique place we have ever stayed. It is a "cob" house on top of a mountain which is totally off-grid. It has solar panels, a propane powered gas range, amazingly pure well water, and hot water on demand. There is a high efficiency refrigerator and freezer, and a real wood burning fireplace - and AMAZING views of the North Cowichan Valley.

Outside there is a deck, a BBQ, a fire pit, and more peace and quiet than you will likely find anywhere with the possible exception of high in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies!

The house has two bedrooms with comfortable queen beds, and a full featured bathroom complete with a shower equipped with a low-flow shower head. Just about everything you could want is thoughtfully provided. All you need to bring is your our food and clothing. There was just the two of us, but two couples or a family would not be a problem in this house.

The quiet at night is only broken by the chorus of frogs croaking. Lots of birds around too.

While many have talked about the great sunsets, we did not get a decent sunset - however - we did get amazing SUNRISES!

There is no TV. No Internet. No power lines. No hard phone line. There is excellent cellular reception though. This makes it very easy to stay in touch if you have to - and very easy to "pull the plug"!

If you want a hot tub - then you need to go into Duncan to the North Cowichan Rec. Center. Hot tubs would not fit with the absolute minimization of energy consumption that this place was built on. And it is amazing how little energy this place needs! If all houses were built like this, BC Hydro would be out of business!

Firewood is provided, and I think I had a fire in the fire pit almost the entire time. We cooked all our own meals, and the food just tasted better up here!

We did take a little time to explore the Duncan and Cobble Hill area. Lots to do and see for sure, but we got back to the house as quickly as possible!

This place just felt like home to us. It's really hard to describe, you just feel it. We had the best time, and a great time to cast aside "the world" and reconnect!

If you are looking to get away from it all and get some serious relaxation, peace, quiet and PRIVACY, then look no further! This is for you!

You have to do your own dishes, and clean up a bit before you leave. It only took a few minutes. So this kind of getaway may not been for everyone.

We brought our own cast iron pans for cooking. Nothing else needed!

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Tonya and Leon's property and Ecohouse offered a perfect setting for our wedding in the Cowichan Valley. Our guests were blown away by the unique and beautiful setting of our ceremony which took place on the property, amidst the arbutus trees and overlooking the river and valley. The house was a comfortable base for us to relax and enjoy nature as we prepared for our celebration, and then after the festivities, as we wound down. It is very well equipped and extremely comfortable and spacious. We look forward to being back very soon.

Stunning! Unforgettable!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of spending 5 nights at the Ecohouse. Tonya and Leon were doing some work on the property so we got to meet them and they gave us great tips for wildlife watching and things to do in the area. The house is more beautiful than the photos and the serenity is unlike anything you would experience outside of the backcountry. Coming home at the end of each day of exploring gave an immediate sense of calm. We could hike around the property and watch the sunset and we were lucky enough to see several deer and wild birds around.

The house is extremely comfortable and well maintained in all regards. The shower is great, the bed is firm and supportive and there is plenty of storage space. The kitchen is fully stocked with enough pots, pans and dishes to make it feel like home. We loved having a grill on the same side of the house as the sunset. Duncan has good supermarkets (Thrifty Foods was a favorite) and farm stands so stocking the kitchen is a breeze. There are many local hiking options or you can venture to the local Gulf Islands (highly recommended!). We went to Salt Spring Island (ferry from Crofton) and Gabriola Island (ferry from Nanaimo) for day trips and enjoyed the different culture and scenery. Our only regret is not making this our last stop on holiday; other rentals cannot match the Ecohouse!

The Cowichan Valley is the 'bread basket' of Vancouver Island! It offers a bounty of farms, markets, and wineries to visit, along with delicious local, organic offerings at many restaurants. Cowichan Bay has the distinction of being officially designated as North America’s first Cittaslow Community.

Along with it's food and wine offerings, the Cowichan Valley is home to the type of spectacular views and outdoor activities the west coast is known for. Hike around Stoltz Bluff and enjoy a 360 degree view of the entire valley. A paradise for bird watchers, hikers, and all those who enjoy wildlife and outdoor activities (including just relaxing at the river, lake, or ocean!).
