Staying here resulted in the best Hawaii vacation we have ever taken. The property management were very easy to deal with and very accommodating and the home is gorgeous - if I were to buy a home in Hawaii, this is the place I would want.
Old and rundown with much potential for improvement, photos don't show true condition
We (6 adults) stayed in this house for 2.5 weeks. We enjoyed the generous size of the house and sitting in the bright living and dining rooms, overlooking the trees. We liked the greenery and the view of the ocean. The bath towels were very new and there was a generous supply of bath toiletries and dishes. Otherwise, we had many problems with the furnishings/equipment. Except for the size, the house is by no means luxurious. The house is 30 years old and shows its age, especially in the kitchen and the baths, which were rundown and old, with paint peeling and pieces falling off. The faucets were full of limestone stains, there was mold in some of the baths and on the air conditioning vents, and the walls had stains. The cabinetry was often warped and many items did not function properly, including the garbage disposal, vacuum cleaner, mixer, rice cooker, and gas grill. We did not expect to need to use a broom and dustpan in such a house (we also had a mid-stay cleaning). The beach umbrella was missing a crucial piece and the rack to dry clothing could hardly stand. The air conditioning was inconsistent with some areas very cold and others too warm along with bathroom smells being transported to other rooms. Despite the max occupancy of 10, the hot water supply was not sufficient for 6 people showering in a short period of time. The pool was not cleaned regularly enough although we requested cleaning and multiple tiles were missing on its steps. The additional small pool was empty, which a rental agent explained as being due to it contaminating the larger pool. Many of the outside wooden jalousies were broken and noisy and the old windows were in part unmovable and allowed noise to be heard in the street-facing bedrooms at night. Rainwater leaked into the house next to clearly older water damage. We were also disappointed by the response of the rental company as class 5 Hurricane Lane was en-route. Only after many requests did the company agree to undertake any safety measures at all. The storm luckily never hit Oahu strongly, but their advice of heading to an emergency shelter came right after the governor stated only those in the flood zone should use the shelters—and this house is not in the zone. As this house has been on sale for the past years we can understand that the owners do not want to invest in any improvements. But then a more realistic and accurate description and a lower price would be appropriate. We would not stay here again.
Your experience was shockingly dissimilar to all of our other past guests. In fact, I have other properties listed on HomeAway and have never received anything except 5-star glowing reviews. I'd like to address your complaints: Our house is a quality home built by one of the most famous architects in Hawaii and we spare no expense to maintain it meticulously. There is NO peeling paint or mold anywhere on the premises. We have the most diligent property manager possible (please refer to other guests rave reviews about Eva) who would never overlook limestone stains, mold, or any of the other issues you claim exist. In fact, the air conditioning, hot water and pool are all serviced on a regular basis and all certified by the service providers as being fully operational to the highest standards. Our windows do not have jalousies, but instead have beautiful custom shutters that can be adjusted for sound and light. Unfortunately, a hurricane came through Hawaii during your stay, which must have caused you to stress, given the large number of calls you made to our property manager, however, before you even called, we had all of the outdoor furniture put away and all of the windows taped for your safety. As you mentioned, our house is not in the flood zone, so there was no need for further preparations. As for the garbage disposal, vacuum cleaner, mixer, rice cooker, gas grill and umbrella that you claim did not work properly, perhaps you were not familiar with how they work, since I arrived the day after your stay and found everything in excellent working order. Our property manager did everything possible to make your stay wonderful and I am sorry you didn't appreciate the property as all of our past guests have.

Amazing property for a large family with perfect location close to many wonderful adventures
From start to finish we loved our time in Kahala. The home is so close to everything but in a quiet neighborhood where you can get away from the crowds. Perfect views from the main and top level and a great pool to cool off. We would highly recommend this home to anyone.

Luxurious house near Waikiki
Our group of seven family members spent the month of December at Karen's Kahala mansion. We were all in awe of its grandness. The outlook from the living room was lush and green - you certainly knew you were in Hawaii! Each bedroom was connected to an elaborate bathroom, one even had an ocean view. The house came well equipped with every imaginable kitchen item as well as towels (including beach towels) and beach gear (boards, chairs, floats). We did not use the parking space allotted for guests in the garage, but chose to park on the street, where there was ample parking. The house is situated 5 minutes to Waikiki by car or a 40 minute walk along the Diamond Head road from which you can watch surfers at all times of the day. It was always nice to return to the residential neighbourhood of Kahala, where the house is located. We spent most of our time in the beautiful living room - dining area, which, unusually, did not have a TV. We spent a lot more time interacting with one another as a result. And for those who wanted to watch TV, there was one in the rec room on the bottom level. The onsite team of property managers weas exceptionally responsive to our needs. We should of asked how to turn off the AC altogether as it consumed a lot of electricity even though it was set in the 70s.Two things to note were that the kitchen doors were loud and could be heard throughout the house and that the pool, at that time of year, was mostly in the shade of the beautiful garden trees. Because the water was cold, and it was an unusually cold December, we did not use it. Living in this mansion though was without hesitation a five-star experience!
Beautiful 2 mile walk to Waikiki beaches, shopping and restaurants.
