Des and Lisen were both born in Hawaii, Des' family first having arrived in the early 1800's. We have a coffee farm, Holualoa Kona Coffee Company, about a half a mile from this property where we grow, mill and roast coffee for many farmers in the Kona area. Free tours of our organic farm are offered. Des is a farmer at heart and also enjoys growing chocolate, breadfruit and tropical fruits which you will see surrounding Kona Le'a Guest House as well. In our free time we enjoy ocean swimming, stand up paddle boarding, surfing and hiking. We live about an hour away in the center of the island in the small town of Waimea where our children go to school.
Lisen purchased this House in 1998
Why Lisen chose Kahaluu-Keauhou
We love the privacy of living in the rural hills above all the action of Kona--but also enjoy being close to it. It's a perfect spot between two worlds. This elevation has a delightful temperature--never too hot or cold, just right. This home has a special feel to it--a feeling of old Hawaii with all the comforts you enjoy.
What makes this House unique
Huge old trees surrounding the house give a feeling of being in a tree house--tucked away in a tropical wonderland of flowers and fruit trees. A great feeling of privacy with a grand view of the Kona coast.

The highlight of our visit to Hawaii was staying in this beautiful, gracious home. Lisen and Des have seen to every detail and made their home an unparalleled place to set down roots on the Big Island. Every comfort is seen to. The grounds are lush, the architecture is lovely, the appointments are tasteful and everything contributes to a sense of well being that I haven't ever experienced away from home. Really, they have seen to every possible need. I would return here in a heartbeat and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else on the island. In fact, I would be perfectly happy never to leave this lovely, lovely home. The lanai is so special, the kitchen has everything one could want, and the home is light and airy and beautifully furnished. So many rentals in the islands have stock, cheap furnishing; however, Des and Lisen have furnished this like a real home. No tat! It has an understated elegance that I so appreciate. Thank you so much for such a wonderful home away from home.
Lovely, expansive home in a hilly, private, country setting.
We were surounded by the sounds of nature, greenery, and beautiful views! Both ends of this lovely, house allowed for us - two couples - all the privacy needed. Having breakfast outside on the open laina/deck, during the month of April was a treat, and such a pleasure - especially for those who are visiting Hawaii from the Northeast!
The home, architecturally interesting as well, has been beautifully decorated with the owners' family art, and very much reveals their sense of honoring and preserving an older home. Among us were a biologist, a painter, and a potter - and all of us appreciative of the art, conservation, flora and fauna - so the setting was a perfect place for us. Relax and unwind.
Using the home as a base for excursions to other parts of the island, you will find that due to the elevations on the Big Island, the country roads wind and bend. You will need a car to reach everything - grocery stores, restaurants, etc., which are not very far away, yet may seem far.
There is another tenant on the property - an apartment below the house, so it is not totally private in that sense. Entrances are completely separate.
Great Up-country “Old Hawaii” Getaway
Great return visit, feels like home!
We always enjoy the up-country location, community, beautiful surroundings, spacious home and endless views!
Spectacular location and home
What a wonderful plantation house and location. The citrus fruit was ripe during our stay and what a joy to pick and eat. Enjoyed the privacy and the cooler temperatures where air conditioning not necessary. Our favourite was sitting on the lanai each morning having coffee and the beautiful sunsets each night. We will return to such a gracious house soon.
Beautiful plantation home, lanai and view
Beautiful traditional Hawaiian plantation home with extraordinary lanai and views. Well appointed, with well stocked kitchen, beach items, shampoos, aluminum foil etc. Lush landscaping. Great location. Lisen was great. Loved it.
Having stayed in this wonderful house many times, the beauty of the home and grounds still amaze me.
Driving up the drive way we feel like we have come home when we arrive.
The minute you step in the door you know you are in a special place.
Lisen and Desmond are the best and could not be more accommodating.
Thank you again for a great relaxing getaway.
Thank you so much--we look forward to having you back again!
Aloha from Lisen and Des
