About Lisen

Des and Lisen were both born in Hawaii, Des' family first having arrived in the early 1800's. We have a coffee farm, Holualoa Kona Coffee Company, about a half a mile from this property where we grow, mill and roast coffee for many farmers in the Kona area. Free tours of our organic farm are offered. Des is a farmer at heart and also enjoys growing chocolate, breadfruit and tropical fruits which you will see surrounding Kona Le'a Guest House as well. In our free time we enjoy ocean swimming, stand up paddle boarding, surfing and hiking. We live about an hour away in the center of the island in the small town of Waimea where our children go to school.

Lisen purchased this house in 1998

Why Lisen chose Hawaii

We love the privacy of living in the rural hills above all the action of Kona--but also enjoy being close to it. It's a perfect spot between two worlds. This elevation has a delightful temperature--never too hot or cold, just right. This home has a special feel to it--a feeling of old Hawaii with all the comforts you enjoy.

What makes this house unique

Huge old trees surrounding the house give a feeling of being in a tree house--tucked away in a tropical wonderland of flowers and fruit trees. A great feeling of privacy with a grand view of the Kona coast.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Two couples from Tucson, visiting the Big Island again, as we have for many years, and we stumble upon this glorious home that welcomes us at every turn. To say we are taken with the charm of this home is an understatement. The decor, the wonderful kitchen, the comfy lanai, and the lush grounds all come together to create a magical setting for an amazing stay on the island. As our adventure unfolds we soon realize we will someday return to this heavenly place. This is our first stay here but not our last. This vacation home has exceeded our expectations in so many ways. The painted panels on the walls, the magnificient light fixtures, the special touches throughout, and the beautiful artwork all unique and calming. Our island oasis.

Notes:
We encourage couples with our pricing--it's really not too big a house for just two people. We love our longer term rentals and provide a good break in price for stays of over a month. This is a great house for couples traveling together as the main bedrooms, both with king beds, are at opposite ends of the house, providing privacy. It's perfect for families as well--we raised our two children in this home. Millie lives below house in separate apartment--very low key, gone much of the time--you will hardly know she is there.

A very special place

  • 5 of 5

Even after seeing the beautiful photos online, my family was blown away by this house. It's so spacious, comfortable and clean, well-equipped, peaceful and secluded but with incredible vistas -- felt like our own private paradise. Thought we'd never want to leave the luxurious lanai but eventually we did get hungry...easy to drive all over Kona-Kailua, to great snorkeling, beaches and the rest of the island from the highway just below the gated entrance to the property. Great food and coffee in Holualoa just a couple minutes away; groceries and everything else we needed within 15 minutes drive. A car is essential. The owners were very responsive even though they were on the mainland when we were there. The neighbor downstairs, Millie, is very nice but we barely saw her and certainly never heard her dog so we really felt like we had the place to ourselves. My daughter loved harvesting her own cocoa, papaya, avocado and lychee; there are gorgeous orchids everywhere too. We had lovely evening rain and clear mornings. Being so high up the hill, we didn't need A/C or even the fans that were there to feel comfortable at night. What an incredible place. We can't wait to go back. (and yes I really did see the famous "green flash" at sunset from the lanai the day we arrived!)

Charming old house on beautiful grounds

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic place to stay, very large, private grounds with Avacodo trees, Mangos, Banana, Cacoa growing all around. Fairly close to Town.

The house is very well cared for and has everything & more that you would need for your stay.

The ultimate spot to unwind

  • 5 of 5

This is such a calming place to be. The bird song is a constant, along with the smell of flowers. We loved having our meals sitting on the lanai overlooking the ocean. The house is fully equipped with a large kitchen and huge bedrooms. The only slight disappointment is that two years on the piano is still unplayable.

Owner's Response: Oh so sorry about that piano Sam! I'm afraid it has seen better days. The piano room serves as a nice game room for the kids these days. Glad you enjoyed the peaceful getaway. Aloha

Beautiful home away from home with spectacular views!

  • 5 of 5

First off, I must apologize to Lisen and Des for this late review. I thought I had reviewed it already but checking back, that was for our stay here in 2015. We found such a perfect and idyllic vacation home at Kona Le'a in 2015, we couldn't resist the urge to come back for two weeks in Nov./Dec., 2016, and we are feeling that urge again! This is such a welcoming and comfortable home with beautiful antiques, superb furnishings and decor, and an amazing panoramic view of the Kona coast. It is a perfect place to come home to after exploring the island and doing day trips. If you want to cook, the kitchen is big, beautiful and well supplied with all your needs. The large, well furnished lanai is perfect for morning coffee or late afternoon sipping your favorite beverage while watching the sunset over Kona. The property is so big and lush and invites you to come for a walk and pick some fruit from the bountiful tropical trees. This home is a dream. Once you have stayed here, you will want to come back again and again. Lisen and Des will make sure all your needs are met, and Cindy, who lives in the downstairs area, is a fountain of information and will be happy to answer questions for you. Such a busy lady doing charitable works around the island, Cindy is rarely at home, so you have plenty of privacy. We love this place and we're hoping it's not getting so popular that we won't be able to book it for our next trip! Better get on it!
