This is the most beautiful valley close to

the Dordogne River in the heart of the Perigord Noir. We often take bicycles to the river (30 minutes) of surreal scenery. Idyllic, private location perfect for discovering prehistoric caves, ancient castles, wineries, quaint stone villages, fois gras, delicious french country cuisine and many other wonderful

scenic experiences. Canoeing or kayaking on the Dordogne is a dream...slow, clear and calm best describes this gorgeous river...it is an awesome experience for ANY age, young and old alike! Come and learn the meaning of bliss!

About Barton Whelan

Kristi and I were born and raised in central California. We have lived in Big Sur, CA (Monterey Peninsula) 40+ years. We have three children and three grand children. We absolutely love our ancient stone cottage in Carves, the heart of the Dordogne, as the english speaking call the area. The french refer to this area as the Perigord Noir, famous for their fois gras, truffles, goat cheese (chevre) and all products of duck.

Barton Whelan purchased this cottage in 1975

Why Barton Whelan chose Dordogne

My mother bought this property as a ruin in 1975 and lovingly restored it to the warm and cozy home it is today.

She deeded the property to us in 1999 (we are truly blessed).

What makes this cottage unique

Our favorite part of this home is that our neighbors make the absolutely best award winning chevre (goat cheese) in all of France...I have sampled it throughout other parts of the country and nothing beats it's quality. I didn't even like the stuff until I tried their's now I can't get enough! All the food there is a true delight. Considering the food, scenery, history, pre-history, rivers and valleys and patchwork farms and medieval stone villages and castles and prehistoric caves

we never grow tired of the area and we spend 6-8 weeks there every year for the past 20 years.

Amazing Retreat in the South of France

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a chance to spend sometime at Montauban with another couple during the first week of June and we all loved it. We stayed in the guest house while the other couple had the bedroom in the main house, a perfect arrangement for the four of us. What a beautiful old cottage and very comfortable, especially the beds. Ton and Rinie were awesome! They live about about half a mile away and were very attentive if we needed anything at all. As all the other reviews stated, this is a great place to stay while discovering all that the Dordogne has to offer. We would love to come back someday.

Charming country house!!!

  • 5 of 5

We live in the Lot region of France and when we wanted to visit the Dordogne we stayed at Montauban with another couple from the States. This is a great location for seeing the region and enjoying the beautiful Dordogne countryside. Fabulous views from the house. We really enjoyed canoe trips on the Dordogne river with the lovely castles, the great French country food and wine, and would highly recommend Montauban particularly for two couples as each have their own building. Also would be great for a romantic holiday.

Quaint and Perfectly Located

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this charming spot for a week in October. While we were prepared for typical fall weather, possibly rainy, had excellent weather each day. The cottage is well suited for exploring the Dordogne Valley and its many charms. Driving the back roads to each destination is a pleasure. Food and wine lovers will be in heaven; La Esplanade and L'Envie des Mets were outstanding. Nearby Sarlat is foie gras central. We drove to St. Emilion for a day of wine touring. Local daily markets offer excellent food shopping choices. We cooked at the cottage three evenings and took advantage of the excellent cuisine in the area for lunches. Beyond the food and the scenery, the Vezere Valley offers must-see cultural sights. Ton and Rinnie, the property managers, helped us get the most from our stay, and we would go again. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thank you Harry and Jackie for sharing your experience at Montauban. I am so glad the weather in October was good to you! Although Ton and Rinie live nearly 1 kilometer from Montauban, they are always available for our guests. Hopefully you two will return someday. It is a magical area that can be enjoyed many times. It always has more to offer, time after time. Sincerely, Bart Whelan

charming cottage in a wonderful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in Montauban. First the warm and generous welcome Ton and Rinnie gave us, and then this incredible charming house...It was so relaxing to arrive "home" in such a peaceful place after visiting the caves, castles and medieval villages packed with tourists! Despite its "character" and beautiful deco this house has everything you may need.

We also enjoyed those narrow winding roads among the woods, such incredible landscapes, the peace despite the tourists..and of course the food and Bergerac white wines. The region is amazing both for the nature and culture, but Montauban itself is worth a visit.

We were so busy visiting places that didn't have time for a stroll in the countryside, we should come back!

We are thankful to Ton and Rinnie, they are so nice, we always had that feeling that they were close in case of need, everything was so easy with them...and we enjoyed very much our conversations!

Life in Perigord

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent two weeks here. We were met by Ton and Rinnie who were always available with friendly help or assistance. The property has a comfortable lived-in feel. For us it was the perfect base for long walks through the beautiful French countryside, trips to prehistoric and medieval sites, dining out in restaurants serving local produce and dishes. And in the evening we were able to sit on the balcony and, glass in hand, watch the deer feeding on the grass a few metres below us. We came back home, refreshed and relaxed-the sign of having spent a great holiday.

PS: the Wi-Fi works a treat so you never feel out of touch!

Peaceful Aquitaine Farm House

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful bucolic setting with sweeping views of the gentle valley and hillsides off the back deck. The place is cozy, charming and well enough equipped to make any area vacation a good home base. The caretakers are personable and accommodating and it was a treat to get to know them. With fresh goat cheese up the road, a good bakery 3 miles away , a very good smoked salmon pizza at the Troglodyte Café in downtown Belves , or a wonderful kayak opportunity on the Dordogne River, look no further. Vive La France.
