'The Ohia Hale Guesthouse'

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

1BR 1BA Cottage with a fantastic view

This private cottage is perfect for honeymooners, or anyone looking to escape the typical hotel scene. A complete home with lanai, kitchen, living and dining areas, full bath, and basic amenities will be your very own escape to paradise while still enjoying the accommodations necessary for any vacation. Not to mention your own private hot tub on the open lanai, a romantic scene for enjoying the peace and quiet and stargazing at night.

10/2015 We made several updates to the guesthouse including: sliding glass windows over kitchen sink, new bathroom tile, new toilet, new window screens, new paint in the bathroom, fixed a small roof leak, added a screen door on the front entrance, and put in a new electric cooktop. Our next project will be to repaint the living room!

Please note that Hawaii is slightly different from the mainland USA in that the state/people has their own sets of traditions, values, norms, and ways of life. Many things we take for granted in the mainland are not quite the same here in Hawaii. Sometimes variables like utilities, smells, noise, neighbors, cars, animal life, repair-times, etc just cannot be managed in the same manner as in other parts of the world. While we do our very best to insure a delightful and 100% positive vacation, please understand that some of reasons we love living and vacationing in Kona can occasionally be a bit inconvenient. Thank you for understanding. We look forward to hosting you!

We loved the Ohia Guesthouse. The view of the ocean and sunsets were amazing. Very private.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at 4 places in 22 days and this was our favorite. Seven days of peace and quiet, amazing sunsets, a great kitchen and of course the hot tub. Like all of the big island the sand beaches are a challenge to find but we found a great one 20 minutes away.

This is a real GEM at the end of the road!

  • 5 of 5

Many wonderful words have been written about Ohia Hale and they are all true. We have stayed in many great places in Hawaii over the past 20 years, and this is among our top 2. Finding the place is slightly tricky but once there it is all amazing. From the view, amenities, price, location, and personal service of the owners it is truly a 5 star Guesthouse. This is the first time for us to stay in the vicinity of Captain Cook and it was most enjoyable. Traffic is always the number one "bugaboo" in Hawaii, but we didn't notice it as much from this location. The convenience and selection at The Choice Mart was very good and while a little more expensive we didn't have to fight any traffic to get to the larger stores in the Kona-Kailua area. Sitting in the hot tub each morning with a cup of coffee and in the evening with an adult beverage are the perfect ways to open and close your day! The view, as mentioned, is totally worth the price of admission and each sunset is a huge bonus. Many many mahalos to the Livingstons for sharing their little GEM at the end of the road with us. It was truly an amazing vacation stay!

Great view!

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful house, and the view is amazing! We also liked how the owners had some beach gear we could borrow! Be aware that the driveway to the property is pretty steep, and can be tough in a sedan, especially if it's raining. There is also no A/C which is fine for most of the time, except on muggy nights when you are trying to sleep. Overall though, the property is great!

Ohi'a Hale guesthouse is the epitome of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Just returned to reality and wanted to let you know that we REALLY loved the Ohi'a Hale guesthouse. Everything about it was exemplary!

The elevation is ideal: nice and cool! The location is ideal: The bottom of Coffee Drive ends up in a mini jungle. The house is fantastic and stocked with all necessities to make a great trip even greater (including things for the beach, like snorkel equipment, boogie boards, water shoes, etc.). The view of the ocean is not to be missed, and the wildlife is amazing (feral pigs come right up to the house; geckos hang out with you on the lanai; birds are everywhere, etc.). Best of all, the location is far removed from the hot, steamy, touristy area of Kailua-Kona. Captain Cook just might be the coolest place on earth! And, best of all, it is easily accessible to other areas on the Island.

We'll definitely book it again for our next return trip (we go every two years). Ohi'a Hale guesthouse is a gem!

Secluded hideaway with a spacious view

  • 5 of 5

The photo of the lanai with the panoramic view of Kealakekua Bay is what sold us on this place, and I suspect anyone reading this review was drawn in by the same. Just let me say that no photo does it justice. We usually only book places with a king-size bed (we're fairly tall people), so that was the one trade-off we had to make here (it's a queen). But we survived! The cottage is spacious and lovely, with all the amenities we could have hoped for. The hot tub was especially welcome after exhausting hikes. The road down to the place may give some people the jitters, but it's not that bad once you get a feel for the pair of hairpin curves... it's nicely paved all the way. We grew fond of the geckos who visited us every morning as we ate breakfast while staring out at the deep blue sea. It took about 15 minutes to drive down to one of the best snorkeling spots in all of the islands (2 Step), and a 5 minute drive to the trailhead that leads to another one (at the Captain Cook monument, a 1300' descent). This is a great place for couples who are more drawn to quiet seclusion in natural surroundings than for those looking for noise and nightlife. We loved it!

Fantastic View of the Ocean

  • 5 of 5

The view of the ocean from this house is amazing! You get that gorgeous view whether you’re sitting on the lanai eating breakfast, sitting in the hot tub, on the couch, and even from the bedroom! The owners of this place thought of everything… perfectly stocked with just about anything you could ever need to make it through your vacation. Dishes, toiletries, TV/DVD, satellite… everything. The place is also very private. The only thing you’ll see is the view, and all you’ll hear is the sound of chirping birds in the daytime and frogs at night. We thoroughly enjoyed all the beautifully colored geckos you see everywhere. What really makes this place special is its proximity to great snorkeling. We spent most of our time in the water down at Two Step. We had read that snorkeling near the Captain Cook monument was the best on the island, but we have to disagree. Two Step has a fantastic reef, is extremely easy to get to, and parking is free. The best part of Two Step were the dolphins! They came into the bay several times and swam with us. On one particular day they swam with us for seven hours!

We highly recommend staying at this cottage. It truly was a great place for us and we loved it. If we return to the Big Island, we will definitely be back!
