1BR 1BA Cottage with a fantastic view
This private cottage is perfect for solo adventurers, couples, or friends looking to escape the typical hotel scene. A complete home with lanai (Hawaiian word for porch), kitchen, living and dining areas, full bath, and basic amenities will be your very own escape to paradise while still enjoying the accommodations necessary for any vacation. Not to mention your own private hot tub on the open lanai, a romantic scene for enjoying the peace and quiet and stargazing at night.
10/2015 We made several updates to the guesthouse including: sliding glass windows over kitchen sink, new bathroom tile, new toilet, new window screens, new paint in the bathroom, fixed a small roof leak, added a screen door on the front entrance, and put in a new electric cooktop. Our next project will be to repaint the living room!
Please note that Hawaii is slightly different from the mainland USA in that the state/people has their own sets of traditions, values, norms, and ways of life. Many things we take for granted in the mainland are not quite the same here in Hawaii. Sometimes variables like utilities, smells, noise, neighbors, cars, animal life, repair-times, etc just cannot be managed in the same manner as in other parts of the world. While we do our very best to insure a delightful and 100% positive vacation, please understand that some of reasons we love living and vacationing in Kona can occasionally be a bit inconvenient. Thank you for understanding. We look forward to hosting you!

A special place on the South Kona Coast
Beautiful, private, off the beaten track. If you can handle the hairpin turns, you will be rewarded. Well stocked cabin with lovely lanai. We watched the lunar eclipse from the hot tub. There were wild pigs, wild turkeys, quail, song birds, and a black goat. Some days we never left. Supermarket, restaurants, beach parks are all close by.
Amazing view and lanai
First impression on arrival was the stunning view and it continued to mesmerize us for the 10 days we stayed. Every free moment at the cottage was spent enjoying the ocean views and peacefulness of the lanai. Very private and quiet. Very well equipped kitchen (even a tea kettle and coffee press which is above and beyond basic essentials and we really appreciated that). Living room and bedroom also maximize that view and both have ceiling fans and stay very airy and comfortable. We enjoyed tangerines we picked from a tree behind the cottage for breakfast. All in all everything was perfect and i hope we return.
We loved the Ohia Guesthouse. The view of the ocean and sunsets were amazing. Very private.
We stayed at 4 places in 22 days and this was our favorite. Seven days of peace and quiet, amazing sunsets, a great kitchen and of course the hot tub. Like all of the big island the sand beaches are a challenge to find but we found a great one 20 minutes away.
This is a real GEM at the end of the road!
Many wonderful words have been written about Ohia Hale and they are all true. We have stayed in many great places in Hawaii over the past 20 years, and this is among our top 2. Finding the place is slightly tricky but once there it is all amazing. From the view, amenities, price, location, and personal service of the owners it is truly a 5 star Guesthouse. This is the first time for us to stay in the vicinity of Captain Cook and it was most enjoyable. Traffic is always the number one "bugaboo" in Hawaii, but we didn't notice it as much from this location. The convenience and selection at The Choice Mart was very good and while a little more expensive we didn't have to fight any traffic to get to the larger stores in the Kona-Kailua area. Sitting in the hot tub each morning with a cup of coffee and in the evening with an adult beverage are the perfect ways to open and close your day! The view, as mentioned, is totally worth the price of admission and each sunset is a huge bonus. Many many mahalos to the Livingstons for sharing their little GEM at the end of the road with us. It was truly an amazing vacation stay!
Beautiful house, and the view is amazing! We also liked how the owners had some beach gear we could borrow! Be aware that the driveway to the property is pretty steep, and can be tough in a sedan, especially if it's raining. There is also no A/C which is fine for most of the time, except on muggy nights when you are trying to sleep. Overall though, the property is great!
Ohi'a Hale guesthouse is the epitome of Paradise
Just returned to reality and wanted to let you know that we REALLY loved the Ohi'a Hale guesthouse. Everything about it was exemplary!
The elevation is ideal: nice and cool! The location is ideal: The bottom of Coffee Drive ends up in a mini jungle. The house is fantastic and stocked with all necessities to make a great trip even greater (including things for the beach, like snorkel equipment, boogie boards, water shoes, etc.). The view of the ocean is not to be missed, and the wildlife is amazing (feral pigs come right up to the house; geckos hang out with you on the lanai; birds are everywhere, etc.). Best of all, the location is far removed from the hot, steamy, touristy area of Kailua-Kona. Captain Cook just might be the coolest place on earth! And, best of all, it is easily accessible to other areas on the Island.
We'll definitely book it again for our next return trip (we go every two years). Ohi'a Hale guesthouse is a gem!
Located in the heart of Captain Cook, this quaint, private home offers the best of South Kona and easy access to Kailua-Kona. Offering a great view a short drive to both Kealakekua Bay and The Place of Refuge there is plenty of cultural, historic sites to see. Only an hour and a half drive from Volcanos National Park and two hours from Hilo. For your fresh food needs, a grocery store is located just up the road, and there are several great farmers markets for you to enjoy fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
