About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bath

First of all, welcome to SOBRE SUR GRANDE. Hopefully your visit will be as wonderful for you as owning this place has been for me. Sobre Sur Grande is a 2 1/2 acre site. Please enjoy it as your own. I’ve designed the home to give guests maximum privacy.

We offer three choices and or a combination: El Apartamento La Casa Principal and La Casita

Rates range from $5000 for El Apartamento in January and February to $15000 for La Casita in the summer, higher for more than 2 guests, and plus cleaning….So call, text, or email me for specific details.

My primary goal is to have guests feel the pictures don’t do our places justice. I hate it when I go to a place only to be disappointed. That said, hopefully the photos will give you a taste. Take a look at the reviews and I hope you’ll get a sense of visitors’ appreciation.

El Apartamento is the ground floor of the main house (La Casa Principal) in a one or two bedroom option. It has a private entrance, its own hot tub, a two room suite with Stearns and Foster King Bed, a kitchenette for light cooking including a Breville compact over, microwave and Gaggia espresso machine, gas barbeque, bath with deep soaking tub, and most of all, killer views.

I designed La Casita for those seeking a totally 'cush yet private escape. When I decided to build it, the first thing i bought was the Wetstyle two person soaking tub...I actually designed the house around the tub! It sits in the bedroom, with a 5x8 window to the south east, looking down into an oak forest, and an 8’ sliding glass door with views to Rocky Creek Canyon and the Pacific Ocean to the south west. A pair of high powered binoculars is available to explore the canyon and ocean beyond

The bedroom has a Simmons Black queen bed, with the tub and a river rock lined shower, complemented with thick terry cloth robes for lounging. The bedroom is heated by a 220v electic heater, as well as NuHeat radiant heat in the floor surrounding the bed. The bathroom features a Toto toilet, and a commode with glass vessel sink looking out into the oak forest.

If you do get past the bedroom, there is a full living room/kitchen with Miele washer/dryer, professional gas range, and and American Leather queen sleeper sofa. The living room also has a 37 inch internet/satellite tv, with wifi available, and a contemporary gas fireplace.

There are shoji screens between the two rooms offering a modicum of privacy, if you are more than two guests, but it is really special for a couple.

There are two decks, accessible from each room through twin 8 foot sliding doors...The ceilings are up to 16' high, with a clerestory design affording a feeling of light and openness.

I am a yoga teacher who still manages to enjoy the pleasures of good food, wine and company.

And while peace and tranquility were my main goals , a bit of indulgence was also in the cards..So whether it's the hot tub under the stars (for your exclusive use), the 37" flat screen tv, or simply lounging around in the SobreSurGrande terry cloth robes, i've tried to anticipate your needs...If anything is missing, let me know....I get to exercise my inner travel agent!!!

Located on a promontory, 1200 feet above the Pacific, Sobre Sur Grande offers unobstructed views of the ocean, Rocky Creek Watershed and the Ventana Wilderness. Yet it is only 30 minutes from Carmel and a few more to the center of Big Sur, along one of most beautiful 'commutes' in the world. You might just choose to stay home watching the raptors glide on the thermals rising up from the canyon below, then call our private chef, yoga teachers and body workers to come to you. If you're seeking adventure, jump in your car for a lovely drive to Carmel for golf, wineries, shopping and an indulgent dinner, or simply drive a couple of miles to any number of amazing hiking trails

Sobre Sur Grande is 2.5 miles up Palo Colorado Road, with it's majestic redwoods and year round creek, then an additional 3/10 miles up a private road. Mill Creek Redwood Preserve is close by and the Botcher's Gap access to Ventana Wilderness provides the most amazing hiking opportunities. Down at the coast, Rocky Creek Restaurant offers incredible ocean front views and a great place to walk (or drive) . You're close to the best beach in Big Sur where Garrapata Creek empties into the Pacific. It's spectacular, yet completely accessible to families.

But if all these options are too hard to choose between, select from these INDULGENCE PACKAGES, priced based upon number of guests:

For the two of you, begin with a special dinner, Champagne and dessert, wake to breakfast prepared for you, then after a few hours a private yoga session for you whether you've never practiced or are very experienced. You'll end with a 3 hour pampering/massage treatment for each of you (male or female).

Guilt-Free Combo:

Includes 1/2 day hike with a knowledgable Big Sur guide, two 60 minute massages from Christina, and dinner from a private chef.

Stay Home and Spa:

If leaving the house seems just too tough, you'll begin with a gentle private yoga session, then a 90 minute massage/pampering treatment, and a spa menu dinner:

Let Me Eat Cake.

Begins with a special sweet treat from Jamie on your arrival, a wonderful dinner, a special dessert, then pastries and treats for breakfast. There's definitely chocolate in here!

Most of all, I want you to come, relax and enjoy the special feelings that come from being Above Big Sur.

My motto is 'Start Taper Off'

About Owner/Property Manager

I built originally with my son, trying to honor the spectacular location. I've enjoyed converting homes into vacation rental and try to give guests the feeling of coming home rather than to a rental. I hope you'll feel familiar and welcome as that is my goal. I teach yoga in the Bay Area, and spend time here in Big Sur writing when my homes aren't rented. I offer complimentary yoga to guests when i am here

Owner/Property Manager purchased this house in 1980

Why Owner/Property Manager chose Carmel-by-the-Sea

Absolutely unique setting and ocean view. Can be arranged for couples or groups

What makes this house unique

While practicing yoga downstairs, a wide variety of local 'residents' visit: Rabbits, Quail, Deer make the front yard their playground. Hawks and other predator birds sail on the thermals right off the deck, and the sunsets and full moon sets are unforgettable. Two remarkable private chefs live close by, as well as a fabulous massage therapist. I offer private yoga lessons, and can arrange a private yoga retreat for couples that includes yoga in morning and evening, day hikes throughout the area, and wonderful meals

Redwood Wilderness

  • 5 of 5

The place is amazing as I'm sure everyone will agree, and the privacy is worth so much. Access to Big Sur is a fantastic drive, and definitely visit Deetjin, Rocky Point. Avoid Carmel, it's very crowded. The beach just north of rocky point has some easy bluff hikes and beachcombing can be a lot fun with all the wildlife.

The interior is impeccable and since the cabin was built within the last year, stylishly modern with breathtaking views out each window. We didn't see anyone really at all, which was perfect! The porch was probably our favorite part, besides every detail of the craftmanship and thought put into the overall experience.

Be sure to apply for your Mill Creek pass two days in advance to allow access to the premier hiking near the end of Palo Colorado road. We made the mistake of waiting the last minute and it's difficult to get a hold of the ranger on duty with no cell service, although hikes exist at the very end of the road. Mill Creek Preserve and Tony's place will be what we're coming back for next summer!

Definitely the place to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Great Views from a Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

The house was just what we expected from reading the description and seeing the photos of the house and surroundings. It is a beautiful home with many great features that made us feel pampered and comfortable. The Kitchen was well-stocked in terms of cooking pans, etc as well as serving dishes and mixing bowls. It was perfect for us who really loved to enjoy home-cooked meals together. The property was very clean and well-maintained. Tony was very quick and helpful in his responses to my questions by emails before and during our trip. We took a day trip to Monterey on Saturday to enjoy the aquarium using the 4 passes that were available. The views of the ocean both from the deck and at stops along the coast were breath-taking. I would highly recommend this vacation home!

Owner's Response: My only concern (lol) with this review is i hope folks find my home better than they expected! Nothing worse than renting a place online then showing up to something else! I love that they weren't disappointed. Doesn't get much better.

Be sure and stop in Carmel and get groceries, because YOU WILL NOT WANT TO LEAVE THIS MAGICAL PLACE! The view, the deck, the perfectly appointed kitchen and bedroom...if you are looking to get away and get to a place that will transform your thinking almost instantaneously, this would be a very good place to do it. It's like a Four Seasons suite in a treehouse overlooking a redwood canyon and the ocean. And Tony is a great host as well. Highly recommended.

stunning! wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely, exceedingly comfortable home, with amazing views of the forest, hills, and Pacific Ocean from the deck, large windows, and porches! The pictures don't do it justice. We had everything we needed in this beautifully decorated, inviting home. Had actually planned to do some day trips, but were so relaxed and satisfied with the views and the comfort that we didn't leave until we absolutely had to, 3 days later. Would love to go back next time I'm on the West Coast.

Owner's Response: I try to make you excited to come, but am always glad when guests say it's better than the pictures suggest. I don't want to overpromise, so it's great when guests are pleasantly surprised

Perfect base camp get away spot

  • 5 of 5

Tony's place was a great base camp while in Big Sur for a wedding. It was perfect and relaxing for the bit of time we had when not at wedding festivities, with well stocked kitchen, and super comfy beds. And the deck and view were incredible.
