Overview

About the property

6 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed(s), 4 Full and 2 Half Baths (Sleeps 12-16)

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and cared for by the Calvert Marine Museum, the Cove Point Lighthouse Historic site has been lovingly restored and repurposed so that it can now be enjoyed by all. The active lighthouse and keeper’s home sit on a seven-acre point of land in one of the narrowest points of the Chesapeake Bay. It was established in 1828, making it the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in Maryland and the fifth-oldest existing lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. Structures on the property include the 40-foot high brick light tower, dating to 1828, and a keeper’s house, originally built in the same year, but enlarged in 1925 to make it a duplex for two keepers and their families. Other buildings on the site include the 1901 fog bell building, now used as a mini-theatre for public orientations, a two-bedroom cottage built in 1950, and a brick building housing the Coast Guard’s radio transmitter and emergency diesel generator, also dating from 1950.

The 2 ½ story keeper’s duplex has been renovated from top to bottom. The site has a total of six bedrooms, four full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, two washers and dryers, Wi-Fi, brand new custom kitchens, central heat and air, a screened porch, and all the modern comforts and conveniences of home. Visitors can rent the site for three, four, or seven day periods. Many of the home’s original features have been retained and restored, including hard pine floors, cast iron heaters, deep window sills, doors, moldings, and eyebrow windows. The interior is decorated with a mix of old and new and includes original artwork, pieces from museum archives, locally built furniture, as well as one of a kind kitchen tables made from the reclaimed wood of the dismantled Cedar Point Lighthouse and a local general store. The kitchen cabinets were handcrafted locally and the tile that was laid captures the character of a 1925 home. To add interest to the site, portions of the drywall have been removed to expose some of the features of the original 1 ½ story home, which were covered when it was enlarged in 1925.

The grounds are completely fenced with a private entrance and direct access to the beach (you may not swim in the water). The site is an idyllic place to slow down and enjoy uninterrupted time with your family and friends. Since this mixed-use lighthouse site is still a fully functioning site, in addition to being a vacation rental, it will continue to welcome the public during the summer season for tours of the grounds.

Proceeds from this beautiful rental site will support the Calvert Marine Museum and a lighthouse endowment set up for its continued care.

About Megan Purdy

The Calvert Marine Museum is the caretaker of Cove Point Lighthouse, which was acquired by the Calvert County Government in 2000. The museum is located in Solomons, Maryland, just 7 miles south of the lighthouse site. Our three themes include Maritime History of the local area, Paleontology of the Calvert Cliffs, and the Estuarine Biology of the local waters.

The Calvert Marine Museum is open 7 days a week except for certain holidays, from 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. We offer a 1-hour boat tour of the Patuxent River, opportunity to tour the Drum Point Lighthouse, a children's Discovery Room, and many other fun and interesting opportunities.

The museum has been open since 1970 and was created by several locals who wanted to preserve the quickly-changing heritage of the area. Its mission is to preserve, protect, and educate the community about the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding area.

Megan Purdy purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Megan Purdy chose Southern

The property is one of just a few authentic lighthouses still in operation. It is a wonderful combination of privacy and peacefulness combined with easy access to restaurants, art galleries, and entertainment.

What makes this cottage unique

The home sits right on its own private beach with direct access to the Chesapeake Bay. Not to mention the view of the light shining down across the water at night is breathtaking.

Great spot for family reunion

  • 4 of 5

Freshly painted throughout, well equipped kitchen, comfortable furniture on both sides of the house. Wall between opens up nicely if desired, provides privacy if only using one side. Spacious and private setting right on the water. Plenty of hot water. Nice front porch. Very cozy. Would definitely stay here again.

The BEST vacation EVER!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had both sides of this amazing piece of history and it's so difficult to know where to start. The scenery is beyond beautiful, the house itself was far better equipped than I would have guessed (the kitchen had everything we would have needed but not knowing, brought some ourselves). We had, staying with us, the great-great grandson and great-great-great grandson of the builder of this lighthouse, as well as 11 others up and down the Chesapeake Bay. That was a treat for them as well as us. The grounds here are spectacular.....and suffice to say...cannot wait to return and do this again. I've been to many places...and this has it ALL. I can't recommend it enough....it's simply the best!!!

Amazing Place!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a beautiful weekend with family renting both sides of the house. In the off season, it is incredibly private- really more like your own private compound than just a house. The entire property is off limits to the public so you have private access to all the grounds in addition to the house. There is a private gate for beach access and only people who live in the community are out on the beach. The house itself was much larger than we anticipated. The way that it's decorated is beautiful and with very modern kitchens and bathrooms. The town center of Lusby is about 3 miles away with 2 grocery stores and plenty of other amenities. We were lucky to have amazing weather- sunny and warm during the day, cool but not cold in the evening. The screened porch is great for keeping flies out, as they arrived on the hottest day we were there. TV in every room, wifi was great, all the comforts of home in a historic property on the water. We all loved it and hope to return!

  • 5 of 5

Had a sister, aunt, niece, daughter, in law, friend, etc women only long weekend. This is a just a great place to relax, catch up, unwind, and have a most memorable time. The place is impeccable. The furnishing and decor are wonderful. All of us ladies usually go somewhere different every year. Hands down we're all going back. You will not be disappointed.

This private fenced four-acre site sits on a point of land on the Chesapeake Bay. The neighborhood is private and friendly with opportunities for biking, jogging, or just strolling the beach. The site is located just 7 miles from Solomons Island, which boasts many restaurants, a local brew pub, and the infamous Tiki Bar. The Island also offers antiquing, shopping, boat rentals, charter fishing opportunities and the Calvert Marine Museum.

Just down the street from the site is Cove Point Park which has basketball courts, a playground, baseball fields, and even a water park. A shopping center with ice cream shop, coffee shop, and grocery stores is just 5 miles away.

Visitors could also take a day trip to Washington D.C., Baltimore or Annapolis, which is just over an hour away.

Southern Maryland is a rural area surrounded by rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. It is peaceful and feels a million miles from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
