About Beth Vonnegut

My husband and I lived in the Florida Keys, but had been coming up to the mountains each summer to hike. Each time we came up, it seemed like we stayed longer and longer! We began looking for property, thinking that we would like to have a summer home. After a few years, we found a beautiful 22 acre piece of property just outside of the town of Blowing Rock and built a log cabin. We have since then moved up here to the nearby city of Lenoir. We love the four seasons and all of the different activities that each season offers. Our cabin is nestled in the woods and gives us a feeling of calm serenity.

Why Beth Vonnegut chose Bailey Camp

We chose to purchase a vacation rental in this location because of the many and varied, wonderful activities that this area has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This has been the best vacation we've ever had! We love the cabin and everything it has to offer. The kids learned so much here and had so much fun doing it, we have memories from here that are priceless! Thank you for sharing your cabin. I wish I could tell you our favorite part, but everyday was as good or better than the day before.

Fall Colors with Lady Bugs

  • 5 of 5

The very secluded cabin was great. Glass window view was awesome. Moon light at night great, sunshine in the morning was perfect. Woke up in the morning with deer down in the hollow by the creek. Heard turkey down calling down by the creek. Lady bugs every where! Great fire pit and downstairs games for the whole crew. Excellent cabin, can't wait to stay again.

A great secluded get away!

  • 5 of 5

We had a really enjoyable thanksgiving getaway with our two sons who are away at college. We spent the daylight hours exploring the many sights nearby, and our nights were spent around the awesome fire pit outside. They have everything you could ever need. The house was clean and well kept. We would highly recommend this house to anyone!!

Oh, and for those concerned about the review left about the driveway. We made multiple daily trips up and down the driveway in our cars. No problem on any of them, take your time and you will be fine.

Great property as described

  • 5 of 5

The property was as described, which we appreciated. Totally secluded, but only 5 minutes to Blowing Rock. Interior was well maintained. Fire pit and creek were nice bonuses.

A Cabin in the woods is exactly that!

  • 5 of 5

The driveway was a bit difficult to find and first time down & up was a bit intimidating, but each time got better and better. We loved the cabin and it was in a great location for our trip. We would definitely book again if the opportunity arose.

The cabin is pristine & in an idyllic setting but the road to/from the cabin was harrowing.

  • 1 of 5

I want to give a 5 star rating because the cabin is truly gorgeous-great spatial layout/super clean & tastefully decorated with lots of fun amenities in a truly beautiful setting. Unfortunately, I can't give a higher rating, because the property description didn't include references to the driving conditions prior to booking. It is only about a quarter of a mile from the main road to the cabin, but it is an extremely steep descent/ascent on a narrow gravel road with multiple hairpin turns & no guardrail. While the trip down was nerve wracking, the ascent was so treacherous (particularly in the rain) that we made a conscious decision to only leave the cabin 1x daily and to return before dark each evening. In the property description, I believe a 4WD vehicle should be recommended (regardless of season) & drivers unfamiliar with mountain driving, should be cautioned about the "switchbacks" and advised not to arrive after dark on the first day. I hate to leave a poor review, because the cabin really was lovely, but unfortunately the drive to the main road hindered our ability to come and go freely throughout the weekend. If you are comfortable with the drive, you will love your time in this beautiful cabin.

Owner's Response: Hi Margaret, Thank you for your kind words regarding our cabin. We always love our time there and have tried to make it as comfortable and well-equipped as possible. We are aware that sometimes guests from Florida are a little nervous driving in and out to the cabin. We have provided some techniques in our confirmation letter that make driving on mountain gravel roads a lot easier for our guests. Put your car in low gear, swing wide on the switchbacks, and keep a steady rate. When guests experience problems, we can usually look at the road and see that they have hugged close to the inside turns and gunned it (which means they are spinning on turned tires). We have several family members, along with our cleaning service, who do not have 4wd and have no problems getting in and out. Guests who follow those driving guidelines never have any problems with the road. (Please see our last guest comment.) Our suggestion to you would be to request a property off of a paved road, which will make driving easier and less stressful for you.
