About Tom Hess

I grew up in Michigan and went to college at Michigan Technological University. I currently work for a pharmaceutical company in Princeton, New Jersey

Tom Hess purchased this cottage in 1963

Why Tom Hess chose Harbor Springs

My parents built this property in the 60's. I have been coming up to Northern Michigan for over 50 years. Even though I now live in the Philadelphia area, I continue to come back every year to enjoy the wildlife, views and stunning sunsets on Lake Michigan

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is located in a private association just off M=119 (the Tunnel of Trees). This allows a very peaceful and quiet environment. You can walk and enjoy the beach without crowds. The fire pit on the beach allows you to view the unbelievable star display. The cottage has enough bedrooms and bathrooms to sleep multiple families. You are 1 mile away from the quaint store and shops in Good Hart. You are in close proximity to Mackinaw Island, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and the Star Park in Mackinaw City.

We had an amazing stay on a beautiful piece of property! We couldn’t have asked for a better stay- the beach fire pit was especially nice. It was so easy to get down to the beach as well. We felt very secluded.

Lake Michigan Serenity

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at the cottage over Labor Day weekend. The pictures are very true to what you'll find there and the reality is even better than the pictures. The setting is perfect! You'll find woods with lots of privacy, grassy dunes with some trees and sandy beach to play on. The fire pit on the beach is The Best.

The deck has a beautiful view and we enjoyed watching a large freighter and some yachts go by. We could hear the waves lapping the shore from our bedroom windows at night and that along with the gentle rustling of the leaves was the perfect way to fall asleep. If you need restoration and refreshing this is the place to do it.

The area (Good Hart) and Tunnel of Trees is really beautiful. The lemon bars and brownies from the General Store were a big hit with my family. We also sampled the Crepe Truck with delicious results. It's a peaceful and beautiful location all around.

I enjoyed not having internet at the cottage and I believe it was a bonus for my adult sons to "unplug" for the weekend.

There is a lot of storage at the cottage with large closets everywhere. If you have a lot of gear this will be great for you. As everything can be hidden away to keep the rooms looking neat.

I'm greatly looking forward to returning to the cottage. Thank you Mr. Hess for sharing your beautiful property.

Private and rustic cabin with beautiful views of the lake through the trees.

Great northern Michigan location! About 20 minutes from Harbor Springs and 8 minutes to Cross Village. Nice restaurants and shopping, but remote and private too!

Private, Serene, Beautiful...

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the house, it had a nice layout with plenty of room for all of us.

There was a little walk down to Lake Michigan, but the path was like a mini hiking path through the woods and down some wooden stairs. We enjoyed it, just a little nature adventure to the lake.

It was very private and peaceful. We were the only ones on the beach for our entire stay except for an occassional person walking by on the shore. The beach is rocky and not the best for swimming, but it was doable with water shoes.

Great overall experience.

The owner was very attentive and prompt.

Beautiful Setting

  • 3 of 5

We had a girls weekend here and it was fun. It was a bit of a walk to the beach if you have trouble walking. There were a few more steps than we had anticipated, but not bad if you are used to hiking. There's no internet and our GPS had a hard time finding the cabin since it is way back in the woods. My only other complaint was the musty smell in the cabin. If you are allergic at all, this may bother you. Other than that, we had a nice time. I highly recommend the restaurant "Legs" just a few miles north of the cabin. Thank you Tom!
