Walk around the rocks to your right and get to a wide open coconut grove lined beach. Or walk to the Malecon down steps to the sea, or step to the sand all along Esperanza Bay, or walk the sand to the huge long beach of SunBay State Park.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge beaches are not to be missed, for the diversity of settings, beach entrances, and most make you feel you own the place. See the island maps in the house and distributed everywhere.

Snorkeling from shore by Casita Rosita:

The beach just down from our house has good snorkeling that continues along the high cliff and a short ways the other direction. Snorkel also on the west side of the little island you can see from shore—it’s a 15 minutes swim out.

SunBay State Park:

Just around the corner from Casita Rosita at the edge of the Esperanza neighborhood, the SunBay State park can be walked to along the coast, or driven to. This is a very long beach with a view to an island and an isthmus. Easy beach entrance, park casually just across the sandy road from the water. Access to bathrooms, snackbar, tapas & drinks delivered. Swim area is roped off.

Other Refuge Beaches:

On the southwestern side of Vieques includes Playa Grande–great for walking and listening to a loud ocean; and Playa Negra–a reak walk in. On the northern side, there are many beaches. These are all on the Atlantic.

WILDLIFE: Four species of sea turtles live in the waters of Vieques and nest on its shores, sometimes you can see them when snorkeling. Birds and frogs sing in this tropical ecosystem. Egrets stand on the backs of horses. Vieques feels out of time. The main streets are newly paved and wild horses roam them & the beaches.

Vieques is, again, voted the Best Island in the Caribbean (as well as in Bermuda & Bahamas) by Travel + Leisure magazine’s 2012 World’s Best Awards readers’ survey. We are famous for our natural landscape, on land and in the water, and dozens of unspoiled beach choices.

Stay at Casita Rosita and relax, or you can horseback ride, ocean kayak, bicycle, motor scooter, play tennis, take yoga classes on the beach or in studio, sail, boat, jet ski, surf, and scuba dive. Jump off the new and old piers in Esperanza Bay, paddle surf, explore lagoons & mangrove wetlands, an old sugar mill, and experience wildlife, from sea turtles to wild horses that roam the island. Plenty of healing massage therapists, including reflexology. Join the drum circle, sing your heart out at karoke, listen to a live band, eat at your pick of 43 restaurants.

About Rosie Dempsey

We have rented our home for over a dozen years. We understand the importance of helping you with logistics and getting the most out of your stay in Vieques. We bought a home in Vieques after working as volunteers there. We write for the local island magazine about wildlife, flowers and nature. We have traveled extensively ourselves as nature volunteers and have outfitted our Vieques home accordingly. We endeavor to make you comfortable and happy.

Rosie Dempsey purchased this house in 2011

Why Rosie Dempsey chose Vieques

Open, airy, bright, close to everything, water view, large rooms, stone floors, nice bathroom.

What makes this house unique

The prior owner gardened, so our soil is fabulous and we are intent gardeners. The huge mango tree, the nice neighbors, the closeness to everything, the consistency of the housing on this block, all made this house a great choice after looking at many. We were so lucky.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Rosie and Donald's home surpassed our expectations and made for a wonderful place to spend our nine day vacation in Vieques. I feel like the photos don't really do their home justice, as they don't capture what I can only describe as the "good energy" on their property and the cute little personal details inside that immediately make one feel at home. Arriving at Casita Rosita, we immediately appreciated how cute the exterior was with its white, pale yellow and lavender color scheme, which compliments their LOVELY, private and walled in tropical garden, complete with outdoor shower (which we used everyday). Casita Rosita provided a few things that are VERY important to us, namely cleanliness (everything was immaculate), great natural light and LOCATION! It is perfectly situated to provide easy walking access to the beach at The Malecon, or even Sun Bay, restaurants, bars and a little grocery and bakery are even right around the corner. All of these are literally a very short walk from the house, but being in a residential neighborhood affords more privacy which was nice. We enjoyed all of it as it made us feel like we were really living the rural island life with all the conveniences of being in town! And speaking of conveniences, the house was stocked with just about anything anyone would need for outings to the beach: towels, beach chairs, umbrellas, beach bags, coolers, etc. etc. All in all, our experience was FANTASTIC! Everything went very smoothly in regards to check-in and check-out. We had a wonderful vacation enjoying the exquisite natural beauty that the numerous beaches had to offer. Our kayak Bio-bay tour with Melaya's Tour Company was epic! It's a must do! We didn't have a bad meal during our entire stay, in fact we had excellent food at various restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed the animals around the island both wild and domestic, and our stay at Casita Rosita couldn't have been better or more comfortable. For all of these reasons and more, I highly recommend it!

Very cute cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience at the casita. Adorable house with a cute front porch within walking distance to Esperanza. Around the corner was also a store to pick up "groceries." House did get a little toasty with the windows open, but if you closed it up and put on the AC it cooled off fast. We had a toddler with us, so we did have to do some baby-proofing, but that was no big deal. Also there was no tv, but that was fine. Fed the outdoor cats who were pretty cute. Overall good place to stay.

Lovely House Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to spend a month learning Spanish and local culture. I chose Esperanza and Rosie and Donald's place in particular. It was a great choice! The location was perfect. I walked everywhere and only used the taxi service a few times to go to the Farmer's Market and airport. I rented a jeep for a day to get to the remote beaches. Everything about this place is awesome. So well equipped and Rosie and Donald equip it with everything you need to have a fun vacation and still feel like home. The bakery and grocery store are just around the corner and so convenient. The outdoor shower is awesome. Perfect when you come back from the beach or anytime. Loved hanging my clothes on the line although a washer and dryer are on property and work great. I will miss the coquis, chickens, friendly people of the neighborhood and Esperanza. Rosie and Donald were super hosts, extremely responsive and helpful and so knowledgeable about the island. Highly recommend Casita Rosita and I can't wait to come back.

Casita Rosita is perfect! Perfect accomodations, location, caretaker and more!

  • 5 of 5

Rosie and Donald have done an exceptional job of creating a charming, clean, and comfortable home for their guests to enjoy. The five of us had plenty of space, comfortable beds (we slept like babies!) and great guidance from our hosts. The nearby grocery store and abundant restaurants make the location a no-brainer. Not to mention, the house itself is adorable with incredible outdoor areas, including a beautiful garden. The availability of Ivonne (caretaker) for any emergencies, needs or questions was a bonus and added to our peace of mind. Everyone in our family (teen, toddlers and adults) are looking forward to a return trip as soon as humanly possible! The house is stocked with games, books, beach equipment and more - I really can't recommend Casita Rosita highly enough!

A home away from homr

  • 5 of 5

This adorable house felt like a home away from home. It is Conveniently located (we walked to the restaurants, bio bay tour and shops),. It has a quaint front porch, large open kitchen, nice size rooms with comfortable beds and the back yard is beautifully landscaped with an outdoor shower. The owner has thought of everything you might need and went above and beyond in every area to make certain our stay was wonderful.

Great 2 Bedroom spot in Esperanza

  • 5 of 5

I glance outside today, and watch the rain pummel the colorful October leaves loose from the gnarled maple branches I begin to daydream about the coming winter. And as much as I love the first few months of winter in Upstate NY, I can't not think about when we will get back to Vieques and once again stay at Casa Rosita outside of the melacon in Esperanza.

This past stay was our third time to the little island, but our first to Casa Rosita. Our first stay was up in Isabel Segundo and our second trip was at a house up in the hills. Both nice trips, but at Casa Rosita you are sooo very close to the heart of what you're looking for in Vieques. There is an amazing bakery right around the corner for fresh bread and breakfast each morning. A 2-3 minute walk right into town for late night bites and drinks. a 10-15 minute walk and you're in the water on the world's most beautiful beaches - it's all right there.

The house? Couldn't ask for more. The upkeep is superb, and that was honestly a big concern for us when initially renting, but it was beautiful. 2 clean beds with fans and AC in each room. A FULL kitchen stocked with every appliance you could think of needing, Shower and water work great. Backyard shower is fantastic!

The key was easily picked up from the housekeeper across the street who was super friendly. We really couldn't have picked a better spot and plan to come back on our next trip.

Car: not necessary

Esperanza is the most accessible neighborhood on the island of Vieques. Bakery and market four doors away. Four doors the other direction is the coastal road and the beach just beyond that. A block away is the Malecon--our mainstreet with 8 restaurants, boutiques, nightlife, microbrews, beaches, incredible spots for watching the sun set. Bio bay tours, recreation rental all right here. Shop, hit the musuem, right here in Esperanza. Promenade along the Caribbean Sea right here. Jump from the piers right here. Go horseback riding right here.

Park in front of our house. Great block, good neighbors, nice houses. You don't need a car to get around. Not everyone in you group has to do the same thing. More freedom at this location. Walk to Sun Bay, too.

You can also catch a shared taxi along the boardwalk road.
