About the property

Lovely cottage on 8 acres with wide open vistas

The house has 1 bedroom and a designated sleeping area on an enclosed lanai. It sleeps 2 with extra sleeping arrangements for 2 children or familiar adults. This charming rental is truly a unique way to experience Hawaii with expansive ocean views and wide open spaces. This little house has personality plus with cathedral ceilings, warm lighting and a large wrap around lanai. The lanai on two sides is enclosed with windows from floor to ceiling. Dining is stunning with views of fields and tropical trees to the Pacific. The house sits on eight acres so there is privacy and quiet. Sliding glass doors and many windows offer a sense of being indoor-outdoor. There are no stairs to navigate. All is kept clean.

There is 1 bathroom, and as often in Hawaii homes, there is the option of an outdoor shower with a colorful garden to provide privacy.

The surrounding area is lush and beautiful. The quiet winding roads are perfect for long walks through farmlands, flowers, coffee, guava trees. In some spots both the mountain Mauna Kea and the ocean can be seen. Wild pheasants and turkeys even a few peacocks scurry along the roads.

The location is a central stepping off point to explore the island -- the volcano to the east and world class beaches to west less than an hour away. The historic Honokaa Town and gorgeous Wiapio valley are nearby and Kalopa Park created to protect native species is just 4 miles away.

There are beach chairs, snorkel gear, swimming noodles, boogie board, and beach towels provided.

A fenced in area adjoining the lanai is available for visiting pets to enjoy.

The pond feature has been emptied and now contains potted orchids. This is to minimize mosquitos due to recent related problems on the island.

Airy cottage with great sunrises.

  • 5 of 5

Loved the sunrises. Loved the property. Loved the openness. Lots of pots and pans in kitchen. Some quirks: enclosed lanai that has a bed doesn't completely lock, but we enjoyed the openness. A little difficult to find the cottage. Floors and shower could be cleaner but overall very peaceful stay.

Amazing place

  • 5 of 5

We booked here based on a recommendation from our kids who stayed here a year prior. It is a lovely place about three miles off the main road. It is very private, only a few neighbors. You wind past the Hawaii Vanilla plantation on your way to the cottage. They are a very nice family and I highly recommend doing their lunch and tour. The cottage is off grid, solar powered but with municipal water. It is very well equipped for cooking with a gas stove and full size refrigerator. The bed on the sleeping porch is comfortable and enjoys the morning sun. The Lanai is very large with plenty of space to read or hang out. It is one of the most peaceful places we have ever stayed and really allows you to slow down.

This cottage is perfect for giving us a beautiful private retreat during our otherwise active visit to Hawai'i.

I want to go back

  • 5 of 5

I somehow missed the message asking me to write a review from my stay in Dec 2016. This place is incredible--even better than the photos. Next trip to Big Island, I will be there. The lanai has floor to ceiling windows and you can see the stars like you wouldn't believe, while lying in bed on the lanai. I remember that vividly. I felt like I was glamping. SUCH a charming cottage with everything you could possibly need. We had lots of clouds, so the ocean view was obstructed most of the time, but when it wasn't, it was wonderful (too far to hear it, though). Jane is amazing, as well. She went way out of her way to be kind to us and I really enjoyed talking with her. Lilo was my [outdoor] vacation kitty--a real dog-cat. It is somewhat remote, but if you're someone going to Big Island and not staying in Kailua (aka Kona), that's probably what you're looking for. Can't wait to go back.

We loved our stay!

  • 4 of 5

We loved this private, secluded cottage for our stay on the big island. Jane provided us with great information about the property and travel tips for the island, the amenities were great (good wifi and hot water!), and the location was great for us.

Being at a higher elevation meant cooler evenings, but very comfortable for sleeping and awesome sunny mornings for coffee in the lanai. It was a bit of a drive to get to most places, but that is part of its charm. It was close to Waimea to grab any groceries we needed.

The cottage was clean, had everything we needed to cook, and was a great place to make home for the week while we were there.

Thank you for your hospitality, Jane!

We spent 3 days here and found it incredibly serene, refreshing and calming to the soul! Great little retreat for a writing project that I was working on. Nice amenities, beautiful grounds & absolutely lovely caretaker. Wonderful experience and look forward to returning! Mahalo nui loa Jane!
