About the property

Newly Built Spacious Studio Opening Directly To The Garden.

This peaceful and quiet hidden gem of a studio is perfectly situated in the heart of the city. We're located in the bustling Castro district only a five minute walk to Market and Castro -- a convenient and fast transportation hub with Muni underground, trains and buses. Downtown is only 10-15 minutes away. It's possible to travel directly from SFO by Bart with only one transfer at Civic Center to the Castro Street Muni Station. You won't need a car to get around -- most of our guests enjoy the city without one -- but if you do drive, parking is easy and free on our block.

The Castro is a friendly neighborhood with well cared for classic Victorian and Edwardian buildings, parks, cafes, restaurants, small groceries, shops and the venerable Castro theater. Although it is a flat walk to transportation and Castro street shopping, we have lots of hills nearby with hidden staircases and wonderful views. Start your day with a walk to Tartine Bakery on Valencia for croissants & coffee or up to Twin Peaks for the views. We are perfectly situated next to some of the city's hottest restaurants -- walking distance from the Mission, the Valencia Corridor, Duboce Triangle, Hayes Valley, Lower Haight & Noe Valley

This studio apartment was newly built in 2012 at the garden level of a renovated 1907 Edwardian. Accessed through a side door and corridor to the back, it's great for folks who prefer not to climb a lot of steps. It's a spacious 440 square feet with 9' ceilings, hardwood floors, recess lighting and Anderson sliding doors to a patio and shared garden.

We've set up the apartment for the way we'd like to live if we, family or friends were to stay there for weeks at a time. The sitting area has a comfortable couch and chair, a 32' LCD TV w/cable and DVD, the fabulously comfortable king size bed has lots of great pillows and high thread count cotton sheets. There are bathrobes in the closet and the tiled bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer, bath products and lots of room for your things. Upon request, there is a single mattress for a third person and for our smallest visitors a travel crib or child's cot.

The kitchenette with refrigerator, convection microwave, induction burner, toaster oven, coffee maker, tea kettle, rice cooker and crock-pot, etc. has everything you'll need to eat in when you're not in the mood to take advantage of numerous restaurants nearby. There is a supermarket three blocks away and farmers' markets all over town.

Your hosts, Jan and Wandralee, are happy to direct you to neighborhood cafes & restaurants, interesting places to walk or bike, and all of the wonderful amenities San Francisco has to offer.

About Jan Medina

I've lived in San Francisco for almost 50 years and can't imagine ever moving. I still appreciate the parks, museums, cultural activities, great food and being able to walk everywhere. I'm a bicyclist, avid reader, traveler, mother of two grown daughters, grandmother, scuba diver, ceramist, Realtor and work for social change.

My partner and I love spending time with friends, enjoying a walk across town, and hosting travelers from around the world.

Jan Medina purchased this studio in 1992

Why Jan Medina chose San Francisco

I moved from the Mission district to this wonderful 2 unit Edwardian about twenty years ago because it's both quiet and only a few blocks to the center of everything. I love that I can walk to Muni-Metro (which connects to BART) in five minutes and get anywhere easily and quickly -- it's one of the easiest places to catch a bus, train or taxi in SF.

Although street parking is fairly easy, in 2011 we raised our building to put in a three car garage. At that time we built out a new large studio at the garden level.

What makes this studio unique

The Castro is a friendly neighborhood with well cared for classic Victorian and Edwardian buildings, parks, cafes, restaurants, small groceries, shops and the venerable Castro theater. Although it is a flat walk to transportation and Castro street shopping, we have lots of hills nearby with hidden staircases and wonderful views. I often walk to Tartine on Valencia for croissants & coffee or up to Twin Peaks for the views.

Close to the Metro and check out this amazing garden just outside your door.

I loved this rental property as it was right next to everything. We were so close to the Castro, a grocery store, a drugstore and many restaurants and bars. There was even a hardware store nearby with anything that you could need. I loved the space of the studio. It was perfect for me and my friend. Intimate but not small and perfect for couples, with plenty of space. It’s a lot bigger than any hotel room I’ve seen in San Francisco and has the kitchenette you’ll never find in a hotel room. We were able to keep snacks and little nibbles in the room so we didn’t have to run out to get something in the morning before we were ready to head out to our next adventure. The bed was giant and very comfortable. I could sleep forever on the sheets provided. We had everything we needed from an iron and ironing board to robes and slippers. We were close to public transportation. It was a short walk to catch the Metro to anywhere in the city. It’s also close to bus lines if you prefer. Although we weren’t able to meet Jan, we did get to meet Wandralee and had a great time visiting with her. She was able to recommend restaurants and many things that we hadn’t heard of. The best part of staying here was the amazing garden out back. It was pretty and wonderful to look at as we sat outside in the morning. There’s a great table in the back corner where you can look at the trees and the garden while relaxing or two chairs just outside the sliding glass door. The garden would be great for those who like to meditate or do yoga in the morning. Or anytime as the space is so quiet even during the rush hour. You can’t hear any traffic or noise unlike many of the downtown hotels. I even heard from Wandralee that a couple staying here got engaged in the garden. I’d highly recommend this studio to anyone wanting to stay in San Francisco. I’d love to stay here again next time I’m in town.

The only place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Loved everything about this apartment! The location, the hosts, the neighborhood and the garden. I could have spent four days just hanging out in the private patio full of succulents and a lemon tree. It was so peaceful. The neighborhood was in close proximity to everything we wanted to see and I really don't have a single complaint. Jan and Wandralee were exceptional hosts and I'll be recommending this place to anyone I know staying in San Francisco. The true local experience!

Beautiful garden studio apartment

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at Jan and Wandra Lee's apartment and couldn't be more pleased. Jan allowed us to check-in early since nobody had rented the previous night and our flight arrived very early. The apartment was perfectly located in the Castro district close to public transportation, restaurants, and shops. We were able to explore the entire city using this as our base. The apartment was quiet with a very comfortable bed and great shower. The gardens are absolutely breath taking, and a perfect place to drink your morning coffee. I highly recommend this Castro gem!

Great Apartment Great Spot

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely studio with a wonderful garden outside a slider. The location is super convenient to public transit, though the Castro neighborhood has so much to offer that you may just want to stick around there. The kitchen isn't set up for serious cooking, but it's quite workable for breakfast and light meals. Face it, with all the good restaurants, you probably won't want to do much cooking anyway. We've used other HomeAway apartments that looked way better in the pictures than reality-this apartment lives up to its photos in every way. A+++ and thanks!

We use our stay to be grandparents, it was great to be so close to where our grandson lives. It was also great to return to a wonderful place at the end of the day.

Beatiful garden and functional space

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable, quiet, charming space that is perfect for an individual or a couple. The garden is absolutely gorgeous. The afternoon sun shines in beautifully. You are a short walk from Kite Hill and Corona Heights, so you have tremendous views of the city. The Castro is also a few blocks away, which gives you great restaurants, bars, and nightlife. This is a perfect retreat from a busy, bustling city, but a place that still gives you access to all of those resources.
