Wonderful Property in Quiet El Castillo

  • 5 of 5

We visited Arenal in mid-June and loved the area, especially our stay at the Mirador House. The house is very comfortable and is well equipped with all the utensils, dishes, and appliances one would need for a comfortable stay. The view from the hammock on the deck behind the house was stunning! The neighbors were friendly and not loud, although at times you may hear a motorcycle or two motoring up and down the street, as is the case all over Costa Rica. The village of El Castillo is charming, safe, and full of wonderful people, and was a welcome change to the overt tourism we saw in La Fortuna.

We can't say enough about Z and Nancy. Nancy did a great job managing the booking and Z was there to meet us when we arrived. Z also booked several tours for us, including ziplining and ATV's. He also recommended several restaurants, which we visited and loved. Nancy and Z made the stay at Casa Mirador very enjoyable!

One day we hope to return to Arenal/El Castillo and will be sure to stay at Casa Mirador again!

Great villa! Cool village community!

  • 4 of 5

The community is wonderful. The villa is unique with a beautiful view of the volcano. We did have a few issues with the electricity coming on and off a few times and the cable didn't work for the television the entire time. The property manager offered other accommodations but we opted to stick it out. If we visit again, I think a SUV is absolutely essential. Also we would bring more basic supplies and food. The road to the village is treacherous, but our taxi was able to navigate it. We absolutely loved walking around the village enjoying the restaurants and community life. Mamas restaurant was our favorite. They even delivered the food. The market has all the essentials and there's a cute shop across the street. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the village. An experience we won't forget. Hint: do not feed the village dogs unless you want their company for your entire trip. ☺️ They are super friendly and harmless though.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for writing this nice review. This is a very special place and this home is in the heart of all of the beautiful people who live here. I wanted to add to this review and talk about the TV, power and road, as this is not the norm in this house. You actually arrived the day after the hurricane swept over us, doing no harmful damage, but it did knock out the power lines, satellite TV, etc. We feel blessed that this was all that we experienced, as only 40 miles from here there was huge damage and loss. I am surprised that the electric was only shutting on and off for just a few minutes and not completely out. As for the road, this is a dirt road that is graded several times a year, but the amount of rain that we experienced was tremendous and left us with lots of potholes. They have been grading since the hurricane and still are, so I have a feeling they are going to leave us with a much nicer road than we had before. All of that being said, we really enjoyed you as our guests, and your flexibility with these issues. It says a lot about how nice this home is when you choose to stay in it over a 7 room luxury Villa, The Majestic, which we offered you to make up for the lack of TV in your house!! Take care and thank you again for writing this lovely review. Nancy

Great house, awesome location

  • 5 of 5

I am writing this on our last day here in Costa Rica. We have had an absolute blast and are very happy we found this place. As others have said get a GPS! Beautiful property with a wonderful view, although the volcano has not fully come out of the clouds since we got here the view is still breath taking. The house is exactly as it looks in the pictures down to how they fold the towels on your bed. Fairly nice kitchen that you can cook almost anything you would like, having internet in the house was invaluable to look up activities that we heard about from talking to others travelers and locals. Nancy was very helpful in booking any activities that we wanted to do (normally with little notice). As a bonus we heard about a secret waterfall that is a tough two hour hike up the road the house is on, keep walking up you will go through a couple of cattle ranches, one with a no trespassing sign we were told just stay on the road and he doesn't care. You will cross a small stream walk through a cattle field and the road eventually turns to more of a trail and eventually a narrow jungle trail. Beautiful waterfall that you can enjoy by yourself if you are in good enough shape to make it up there. Perfect location to do all the fun activities in the area, but also very quiet. The food in the immediate area is fantastic, howlers has unbelievable burgers, and the small cafe at the bottom of the hill has extremely cheap but fantastic burritos. No doubt in our minds we will return here again in the coming years. We can not recommend highly enough had the time of our lives here and we are sure you will too!

Dream Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked fairly last minute with Nancy and she was extremely helpful with providing information and helping us book a car rental though I would say to any future travellers rent a GPS and put 'Butterfly Conservatory' into the GPS as a handy trick to find the place since street names don't really exist ;) The GPS was invaluable. So was Nancy's aid in booking excursions and providing information on the area. I highly recommend the horseback riding, it was my favourite part of the trip. As for the cottage itself there was a kitchen with a very nice stove, 2 bedrooms, dining bench, bathroom, shower, laundry room, and TV living room type area. Everything was very clean (though don't be surprised to find bugs now and then, it is Costa Rica and they aren't that scary) and there were plenty of towels. The view from the balcony was amazing and I would spend every morning sitting in the hammock reading and watching the birds fly by. We liked the option of the 2 bedrooms because in spite of it being just the two of us we could chose which one we found more comfortable. The locals were all friendly and a week simply wasn't long enough in this area so we'll have to return some day :D
