About Debbie Van Hise
John and Debbie have vacationed in the N.C. mountains for many years with their family of four children and began looking for a home to purchase in 2003. John and Debbie are University of Florida graduates and live in Gainesville, Florida.
Debbie Van Hise purchased this House in 2006
Why Debbie Van Hise chose Sandy Mush
John especially wanted to be high and have awesome views and we have family locally and wanted to be close to them. We loved that the house only has 3 steps to get onto the main floor/decks and that the house is in a neighborhood yet each home has acreage so the houses aren't very close to each other. The house easily accommodates our large family and was brand new when we purchased it.
What makes this House unique
There is a large bedroom downstairs with two queen beds as well as a large bathroom and family and game room so families with children can easily allow the children to have their own space. It also allows privacy if several couples use the house as there are two master bedrooms on the main floor, each with their own bathroom. There are large decks on the main floor and downstairs with magnificent views for all to enjoy.

Roomy home with great views!
We had several family members coming to visit us up on our mountain. Debbie's house was available, so we rented it for Thanksgiving. We actually ate Thanksgiving dinner there (over 20 people) because it was spacious enough to accommodate the whole crowd. We brought in a couple of folding tables and chairs and we were all set.
The bedrooms are large, the basement bedroom is huge! There was plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The house was clean with plenty of linens and towels.
We had very nice weather, so we did lots of walking in the neighborhood. Some of the family went into Asheville and toured the Biltmore and visited some other spots of interest. It's about a 30 minute drive from the house into Asheville.
We appreciate Debbie allowing us to rent her place. It made for a wonderful Thanksgiving for us and our family!
Every thing was great!! The only issues were the internet was slow and the road is rough going up and down the mountain. Everything else was great the owner was a pleasure to deal with and she had everything set for our family Christmas.
Beautiful location and mountain views (weather permitting)! :-)
The house was very nice and well supplied. The finished basement downstairs, while very nice, was a little musty in spite of the dehumidifier which required frequent emptying by those staying down there. We were disappointed that the WiFi did not connect as we all had work to do on our devices. The owner gave me the information to get it set back up with AT&T but a password was needed and owner could not remember it. (I feel owner should have made the AT&T call themselves.) I recalled reading the following statement in the general information prior to renting -"PLEASE NOTE:IF THERE IS SNOW/ICE ON THE GROUND, 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND CHAINS ARE NEEDED TO ACCESS THE HOME." Because it was early Oct. I did not even think twice about this. However, the last mile or so is nothing but s-curves on a dirt and gravel road with ruts! Not really meant for driving my Dodge Journey on. I was very disappointed that I was not aware of this as it detracted immensely from my comfort in driving at night-hence no late visits or dinners in Asheville. If this driving does not bother you, by all means, it's a great place to stay-but for me, not so much. Except for the WiFi issue, I found the owners to be very responsive when contacted.
I again apologize for the issue with at&t. We did call them and were not able to correct the problem until my husband was at the house in person. He was at the house in mid October. It is now corrected and working well. My husband did say the road needed work and the homeowners association board is responsible for this with plans to remedy the situation which may already be done. Many of the residents are full time. We live in Florida but have local family that can help in emergencies and check on the house frequently. Thank you for your review.
Breathtaking Mountain Views
Wow! The 10-15 minute trek up the mountain was worth it for the breathtaking mountain views. This cabin was fully stocked with games, dvds, linens, towel and cookware. I had a total of 7 adults in my group and it was plenty of room. The location of the cabin was about 30 minutes from everywhere we went (Downtown Asheville, Silding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, Blue Ridge Parkway) Our stay was very comfortable and clean. I would recommend this rental to all my friends. It was also very easy to communicate with the owner Debbie by email. The only downfall is the wifi is not as strong as we (7- millennials) would like it, but that just means more time spent with each other than on our phones.
Cool summer vacation
We enjoyed 6 weeks of cool weather during this summer at this house high in the mountains. It is great that it is on a ridge so we could even enjoy a daily walk without working up a sweat. The neighbors we met on the walks were very friendly so it felt like home. Upstairs the house has comfortable furniture including the beds and a great view out windows in all the rooms and on the large deck. There are many activities in the area to enjoy and a lot of good restaurants with "home" cooking. Very large house is good for visiting grandchildren. Debbie was very responsive to any questions or issues. Expect the WiFi to be slow in these tall mountains. It was a great get away from the heat of central SC..
Loved this house!
Our family of seven (5 kids) had a wonderful stay in the mountain house! We didn't make our initial drive to the house until after dark so the mountain drive up was a bit challenging. After that we learned to take Beaverdam road all the way down and highway is right there. We were mountain driving pros in no time. The house has a beautiful view and the kids spent hours playing board games and playing with toys that were provided. The porch is so peaceful and you can sit out there and just enjoy the view and quiet for hours. There was plenty of space for all of us! We also spent time exploring the Biltmore, Blue Ridge parkway and went to an Asheville Tourists baseball game. Chimney Rock, Sliding Rock and waterfalls such as Looking glass falls we're also highlights. It was approximately half hour drive to most places from the house. An all around wonderful stay!
Located between Asheville and Waynesville with many attractions in both cities as well as close to Lake Junaluska and Maggie Valley. Watch the elk at Cataloochee National Park. The Biltmore Estate and Grove Park Inn are must sees in Asheville. Ghost Town Theme Park on top of a mountain in Maggie Valley is not to be missed. Visit sliding rock, numerous waterfalls along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Deep Creek in the Smoky National Forest for a picnic and tubing. Many art festivals in both Waynesville and Asheville as well as great shopping. Or just sit back in the rocking chair on the deck and enjoy the views.
