About Catherine Ross
My husband and I have lived about 10 miles from our cottage since 2001. My husband grew up in Dryden, NY and I fell in love with the water while growing up on Long Island. We are both graduates of Cornell University and we worth together in a family business in Ithaca. Neither of us have found a place that we would like to live more than our beautiful Finger Lakes region.
Catherine Ross purchased this House in 1978
Why Catherine Ross chose Town of Genoa
Our lake home has been in our family for over 4 decades. Throughout that time family members have created and help maintain a vacation destination where people can enjoy each others' company while surrounded by beauty. Once a mostly seasonal cottage, our parents had an expansive addition built in 2000. They lived full time at this wonderful home until they decided to downsize in 2008. At that time my husband and I volunteered to maintain the home. We have lived just 10 miles from our cottage since 2001 and own a long standing business in Ithaca. We are thrilled that the option of offering vacation rentals helps us to keep this very special place in our family. After five years of vacation rental and enjoying countless glowing guest comments, I know many people feel the same way about our home.
What makes this House unique
This home holds wonderful memories for my family - holidays and summer get-togethers with all the cousins playing in the lake, fishing off the dock, adults relaxing, grilling a great meal to share, enjoying the heavenly sunsets, and making s'mores over a bonfire.

Plenty of room and a perfect water front view!
We couldn't believe how spacious this home was. We had 12 adults in the house with room to spare. The pictures don't do justice to just how large and spacious all the rooms are. Having all the rooms on different level allows for a sense of privacy to each room as well, and each bedroom has it's own bathroom which was great! The house was tremendously equipped as well. Everything you could need for your stay is readily available from the kitchen to the boat house. And absolutely everything is labeled. At first we thought it was a little OCD, but it really did come in handy. Every question we could have had was answered by a sign or label, and we never had to wonder where to put the dishes back after washing! It is obvious the owner really pays attention to details and go out of their way to make sure the guest have everything they need, and don't have questions.
The highlight of the stay is definitely being right on the water. I don't know what was better, drinking the wine we just bought from a local winery on the deck while watching the sunset over the lake, or sitting by the campfire on the beach with the water just steps away. Of course sitting in the hot tub while looking out at the lake wasn't too bad either. The views of the lake were amazing from just about everywhere! We really appreciated the use of the 4 kayaks and the canoe too, and it looked like there were several water toys available as well for warmer weather. It was a little too cool in early May for that!
We really loved the location too. We were close enough to Ithaca, Lansing, or Aurora to get to whatever we needed from civilization; but far enough to feel like we were out of the fray. There is even a pizza place within a couple miles in King Ferry if you need something in a pinch. The pizza and wings were pretty darn good for a small town spot.
Lastly, the owner was wonderful, accommodating, and always communicated very quickly. It was a great stay in a wonderful lake front house and we are already talking about coming back next year!!
We were up for a long weekend in the Finger Lakes and stayed at this house with 3 other couples. The house was awesome. We arrived about 10 pm Thursday and Kathy had the house warm and inviting. With 4 large bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, all our friends loved their rooms. The large living room and patio and deck were great places to hang out during the weekend. Kathy had everything marked for use in kitchen and we all loved the location right on the lake down a dead end street, which was very quiet. Kathy was quick to return messages to us up to our arrival to make sure everything went smoothly. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend.
This house exceeded our expectations. Four couples stayed in this beauty for a long weekend in October. It's spacious and immaculate. We all still raving about this amazing house.
An awesome weekend!
We spent the weekend at this beautiful lake house. Three couples taking a weekend in the Finger Lakes to taste some wine and simply relax. This lake house was the perfect place to do just that. All of us were very pleased with the accommodations and the lake view was awesome. Would definitely do this again.
This rental included everything you can imagine for a vacation on Cayuga Lake. The house was spacious and comfortable. Our family enjoyed every moment!
With a 5 star system, I consider 4 stars a 60-80% rating and felt that Kimberly's notes didn't seem to reflect that. I reached out to Kim to find out more about why she chose to take off a whole star on her review. Here is her response:
I apologize if my 4 star rating caused you concern. It was not intended to be a slight in any way. Our stay was great and we enjoyed all of the amenities your home offered. We cooked together most nights and especially liked having four bedrooms and bathrooms on different levels of the house. It created a lot of space and privacy for each couple which was perfect for us! We had fun at the dock everyday and appreciated having the kayaks available. Everyone was very impressed and it truly was an awesome family vacation for us! If there is a way to change my rating, I would be happy to report a 5-star for you!
The only suggestion I have (and this probably says more about me than your house considering I am a devout rule-follower), I did have times where I felt a bit stressed about making sure our group was being respectful of all your guidelines. And the stove top and I had a love-hate relationship most of the week. It got plenty of buffing during our week since my husband enjoyed cooking bacon each morning for breakfast. ;-) But having said that, I certainly can understand why you need to clearly outline the expectations when having so many users come and go.
Maybe the only suggestion would be to make sure future upgrades are a little more durable. I can imagine that not every renter cares as much as they should about taking care of your lovely home.
I hope this reply assures you that we were very happy renters and given an opportunity in the future to return to your area, I would certainly love to spend time in your property again! I have already recommended it to several of our friends and family!
Take care and best wishes,
To future guests:
I will be honest: I am looking for responsible and neat guests. I make this very clear in the booking paperwork. This is a very large house and we typically have 8-12 guests at a time. I have instructions, signs, and tips throughout the house to help guests follow the rules and help prevent a situation where something is damaged inadvertently. I count on guests to care for the house in a way that allows me to have the house ready for the next group but I am a reasonable person and do not expect perfection.
very well equipped.
We had a family reunion of 12. found that there was adequate room for everyone. Home was well equipped is every amenity that That one could possibly need
Note: We are booked for Cornell graduation 2016 & 2017 and IC graduation 2016. Located conveniently between Ithaca and Aurora, our lake front home is a wonderful spot for family and friends to get together and relax. Our home is popular for families of Cornell, Ithaca College, and Wells College students to stay while in town for sports events, concerts and visits during the academic year. In the summer, guests love strolling through our gardens, swimming and kayaking from our beach , enjoying our beautiful views, and taking advantage of our proximity to wineries on the Cayuga Wine Trail. While in the area, don't miss Buttermilk Falls, Robert H. Treman, or Taughannock State Parks.
