I have traveled to San Miguel from Texas for many years and it is one of my favorite places in the world. The vibrant culture of Mexico is something everyone should experience, and San Miguel is a beautiful, amazing place to explore.
Carlos purchased this House in 2016
Why Carlos chose Colonia San Raphael
This property provides the true flavor of living in a Mexican neighborhood. It's surrounded by family homes, markets and local taquerias, while minutes away from La Parroquia and El Jardin. I always enjoy morning coffee on the roof top and meeting my neighbors.
What makes this House unique

Charming authentic Mexican getaway
This is a lovely, spotless home with 2 comfortable bedrooms, a gorgeous rooftop terrace with an incredible view, 1 1/2 baths, and a fully equipped kitchen ---a real bargain in a non-gringo neighborhood about a 15 minute walk to centro. If you prefer to take a taxi, they are about $2.50, and there are plenty of taxis to hail on Calle Guadalupe 2 blocks away (or for a bit more you can call them to your door.)
We had a great experience for a week here, and found the management very attentive to any concerns or questions we had, and quick to follow up. The staff we dealt with all spoke excellent English.
That being said, this is not for you if:
1) Stairs are a problem: There are two sets of very steep, narrow stairs, the bottom one winding. However if you have limited mobility, San Miguel with its cobblestone streets and teeny one-person sidewalks may present challenges overall.
2) You require total peace and quiet. The streets are extremely narrow, and while there is no need for air conditioning, open windows mean that you WILL hear your neighbors' music and their children playing, dogs barking and roosters crowing. We found that we enjoyed sounds that might irritate us at home, as part of the lively atmosphere of Mexico. It usually quiets down by 9 or 10, even on festival nights.
3) You have no intention of learning Spanish. There are many expats here, but outside of the management co and tour guides, most natives, even in the shops, speak little English. However, they are friendly and usually patient. I know just a little Spanish and managed pretty well in Spanglish with some pantomime thrown in. But it is not Cancun. At least bring a phrasebook, use Google translate, and prepare to pay in pesos.
We hope to return to SMA, and would definitely stay here again.
Charming and authentic!
Casita Hermosa is charming and authentic. It is comfortable with every household amenity necessary in order to make it a home away from home. The only drawback is the lack of parking in front. The nearby streets were too busy and it was unclear as to how safe. We ended up parking at a public parking facility a short distance away. The beautiful San Miguel center is a short 15 minute walk.
I loved Casita Hermosa!
This rental property was everything I was looking for. There were two bedrooms on the second floor with a shared bathroom. There was a very nicely furnished step down living room downstairs with a comfortable couch and throw on the arm of the couch which came in handy. There is also a bathroom and kitchen on the first floor. The kitchen had a bottled water set up. From the master bedroom on the second floor, I could look up the glass enclosed stairwell to the very nice outside patio. I sometimes made coffee with the package of coffee provided and took my coffee to the rooftop patio. The patio has Mexican tile floor and and outside table with an umbrella and cushions for the chairs. There is a lovely view from the patio of the famous Parroquia de San Miguel and the Templo de las Monjas. It's an awesome panoramic view. Many mornings in July, there would be hot air balloons flying overhead in the early morning. Sometimes after a rain, there would be fog blanketing the city. So picturesque. The rental property is in an all Mexican neighborhood but that wasn't a problem even though I don't speak Spanish. It is such a typical Mexican neighborhood with neighbors making tortillas outside their home and selling pastries and homemade juice drinks. It's the real slice of Mexico that I was looking for. It is about a twenty mintute walk to the jardin, called San Miguel's "living room." It is very easy to get a taxi cab to the jardin and they run about 50 pesos from anywhere in town. One reviewer said the living room was a little dark, but I liked it. There are two old wooden doors on the entry with a steel security door. Many times I would open both wooden doors to let the cool breeze come in and I could hear the sounds of the children playing in the street outside. I kept the steel security door lo locked and felt very safe in this neighborhood even for a single woman. Very delightful. I loved this rental property and I hope to be back and rent it again soon.
Barrio Casita Hermosa
I loved staying in the Mexican neighborhood of Casita Hermosa. First thing in the morning, I would open the front door - still having the locked metal gate - and Mexico would pass by: a few roosters crowing, the children in their uniforms, knee socks, chattering and laughing on their way to school; mothers walking by with their children; and the music, always beautiful music wafting in the air; an occasional motorcycle and truck with its bullhorn advertising something. On the corner there is a Pollo Feliz, which indeed made me happy! On the way to Pollo Feliz, you will pass several small local stores where you can buy, say, one egg, or one roll of toilet paper. If you keep walking about three blocks past Pollo Feliz, on the right, you will run into a wonderful bakery. It is every bit as good, if not better, than the famous Blue Door in Centro. I will mention that I am a senior and found the walk into Centro a little much, but then I never truly did it, so I can't really say. I started out one day and then said, "Oh, Why?" The taxis are about $2.50 U.S., and being so near the large mercado there are many coming and going. I have read all the reviews on Casita Hermosa and concur with all. Being by myself in the casa for most of my stay, I always felt safe. I was amazed, with all the activity going on during the day, by 9 pm and for sure by 10 pm, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Except, of course, for the occasional barking dog that is in every neighborhood.
All the people associated with Casita Hermosa, Charles, Home Solutions, are so nice; totally and quickly responsive to any request, inquiry. If you truly want to feel the Mexico vibe, I highly recommend Casita Hermosa.
Nice House and Great Management
My aunt and I rented the home in Oct/Nov. It is a cute house in a Mexican neighborhood within walking distance of the main tourist areas. However, we generally took at cab there for 35 pesos as it was mostly uphill and on way back we would walk. We felt completely safe in the neighborhood and it was not noisy at all compared to my home in Ajijic! There were kids playing outside our doors until around 9pm but after that it got really quiet. The beds were fairly firm but comfortable. The internet was fast enough for skype and watching videos. It did not reach the roof and struggled at times in the bedrooms but downstairs is fine.
My aunt got quite ill our first week there and I emailed the owner/manager and they returned my email in less than half an hour and suggested an English speaking doctor who came to the house within hour. Later they called to check up on her which was certainly appreciated and thoughtful.
This is a great house for someone who doesn't need to be right downtown or is on a tighter budget. I highly recommend this property!
Casita is located one block from San Juan de Dios Market adjacent to Centro. This typical Mexican market is open 7 days a week and has fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, flowers, cheese, restaurants, clothing and much more.
