About Mark Hewitt

I am a proud native Portlander. I grew up here in the N/NE Portland I went to Grant High School and graduated from Portland State. I have watched this neighborhood blossom around me. I bought this home 16 years ago and have lived in it off and on for the last 12 years.

Mark Hewitt purchased this house in 1999

Why Mark Hewitt chose Portland

I bought this property because I was worried that if I didn't get a peice of the neighborhood I grew up in, that it was going to be gone.

What makes this house unique

I grew up in the Historical Irvington neighborhood here in NE Portland and have always loved older turn of the century homes. Pretty bay windows, built ins and hardwood floors. There is something cozy and comforting in these older homes for me.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks, Mark.  Our family very much enjoyed our stay at your house--it was perfect!  This was our first time renting a house, but thanks to how well things went it won't be our last time!

Perfect Location and very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay! Mark has a great property not far from the Mississippi District and Alberta Districts. Uber or Lyft to down town is nothing. Especially for the Street fair on Saturday and Sunday. Very comfortable couches and plenty of room to spread out. The single bath was not an issue, the upstairs has 2 twin beds that would be great for kids but the stairs are a bit steep as you'd expect in an older home.

We highly recommend staying here for location, comfort and amenities. Next time I will bring a hairdryer (my mistake).

Thanks for having us. Mark was a great host.

Best Spot

  • 5 of 5

Super cool place for me and a few buddies to spend a full week. Best restaurants are all around you and an awesome high-end/medium price spot is literally right across the street. Highly recommended for any group up to about 6? We had 3 but still plenty of room. Thanks for the ease and hospitality!

best place we've stayed in Portland

  • 5 of 5

Hi. My wife and I have stayed at 8 homeaway sites in Portland, and we have decided that this location was our overall favorite.

The location is fantastic--you can walk to the heart of the Alberta district in 10 minutes, but the actual street it is on keeps you away from the Alberta foot traffic, etc. Even where it is located, it is an excellent blend of residential, old and new cafes and pubs (there is a nice mid-scale pub right across the street). You are also just a couple of blocks off of I-5, so it is very easy to get where you need to go across Portland, into downtown, or even up to Washington (if for some reason you wished to leave beautiful OR ;) ).

We were there during mid 90s weather, but one room as a very effective window air conditioner unit, and the upstairs (yes, you have access to two levels--and the upstairs has additional sleeping for 2!) had an effective air conditioner stand up floor unit. The owner also provided 4 or 5 fans that you could put around the house as needed.

One little touch I enjoyed was that the house had an old fashioned record player, with a number of LPs, ranging from 40s easy listening to 80s pop and even Ozzy Osbourne.

There are many, many wonderful things to do in Portland, but something new I discovered this trip was the Maryhill Museum, 100 miles East of Portland on I-84, outside The Dalles (crossing over to the WA side--one reason to leave OR, I guess :) ). It is well worth checking out--original Rodin sculptures, Romanian Orthodox religious art and royalty items, Native American art galore, Post-WWI and II French fashion miniatures, and exotic chess sets from around the world (including some made to represent historical military battles). There is also a replica of Stonehenge a few miles away, made by the creator of the Museum.

In any case, this is definitely a location we will consider on one of our return trips to Portland.

Great house!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in this home. The neighborhood was cute - we could walk to a couple different coffee places for breakfast. It was easy to get around by driving or Lyft. The home was comfortable and everything we needed, especially a backyard for our puppy and laundry! We definitely found a jewel in Portland!

A very cute and comfortable home!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our visit to Portland and our stay in the Mississippi Bungalow. The Bungalow is in a nice area with many places to shop and eat nearby (try Gravy for breakfast - yum!). The house itself was adorable and very comfortable for our group of five. It was a very warm few days in Portland, but with the fans and new air conditioner we slept very comfortably. The beds were cozy, and the furniture in the living room was, too. The kitchen was very well stocked and it was great to have so many condiments and other items available for our use. The towels were soft and large, with plenty of them available. The only sort-of complaint I heard from our crew was that the water temp in the shower was a bit temperamental; I didn't have a problem with that myself, but I imagine it's to be expected in an older home. The driveway is rather steep and a bit scary (!), but it was wonderful to have a parking space available for our use on busy evenings. We parked a second car on the street and never had any problems with that, either. Many thanks to Mark for sharing his home with us!

This home is in the Mississippi neighborhood, close to numerous restaurants, bars, and music venues. There is a Coffee shop (Albina Press) just a half a block away. Prost is also a popular bar specializing in German beer with amazing food carts surrounding it. One of my favorite spots is Mississippi Pizza also on Mississippi Ave. Williams Ave and Alberta St. - Good food, shopping, art and character unique to Portland. Google these streets to get a flavor. Mississippi Ave begins 3 blocks from the house. This home is also just 1 mile from Downtown and the Pearl District.
