Three miles outside of Jackson, on a winding country road, a ranch gate marked by two bugling elk heralds a very special property: Elk Refuge, a jewel among Jackson Hole luxury vacation rentals. Set, as its name implies, on the very grounds of the National Elk Refuge, it is a big, open house, built all on one level, in the simple, pared down style of National Park buildings, trim painted in classic camp-green. Great herds of elk cross the wide grasslands on the other side; fox, coyotes, deer and eagles are abundant. The huge, jagged Tetons reign silent over all.

The exterior simplicity of Elk Refuge is deceptive - for inside, all is richness and color, texture and comfort, excellence of design. Monumental windows accommodate the monumental views. The great room, in the center of the house, is truly great. Long leather couches look out to the breath-taking panorama outside; huge peeled tree trunks support the peaked ceiling.

The dining area, kitchen and breakfast table all fall under the auspices of the great room, each space open to the next and warmed by the beautiful river rock fireplace. The gleaming wood floors, the burnished red-gold of the log walls, the antler chandeliers, the clear changing blues of the sky-filled windows, the bright throw rugs and flowers: all combine to create a home so graceful, you might well want to stay forever.

Wide decks function as a second great room in good weather. A gathering of forest-green Adirondack chairs, a hot tub big enough for a crowd – and, just steps away on the front lawn, a cast-iron fire pit, encircled by tree-trunk stools. All, of course, with a vast and heavenly view. Moon and stars sail slowly over the mountains; owls each sunrise is a new and thrilling thing.

A few steps off the kitchen is the family room: a media center, a bar, a hang-out spot; the place for parties, family game tournaments or pizza and movie night. Ample leather armchairs and couches provide plenty of space to kick back. With a fire in the fireplace, a film on the wide TV, music playing on the distributed audio system and drinks on tap at the bar, the family room gets plenty of use.

The master suite is located at the southwest end of the house, in a wing of its own near the family room. A king size bed waits a few steps up in a raised portion of the room; and a TV is mounted on the wall facing the bed for late night news or movies. A big sitting area with two love seats and two comfortable armchairs stands before French doors and a wide private deck. There is a spacious, walk-in closet. In the private bathroom, a giant soaking tub stands next to a big, walk-in shower. Double sinks are set in a long stone-topped vanity.

Elk Refuge has a wonderful, fire-lit office off of the Great Room that can be quickly and easily converted to another guest bedroom if needed. A fold-out leather couch faces the wood-burning fire; a desk, not pictured, is bordered on both sides by floor-to-ceiling bookcases.

There are five guest bedrooms each with their own comforts and joys. Most of the bedrooms share large bathrooms and closets, which open off the hallway. Bedroom one has queen-size log bed, a door to the front deck and a bathroom shared with the family room. The Junior Master has a king bed, a small TV, and a private full bath.

Guest bedrooms two and three are charming, perfect for children, teens or anyone, really. Views from the windows frame the foothills of the Gros Ventre Range. Bedroom three has two twin beds standing side-by-side. It shares a bathroom with bedroom four, which can be a private room for one, or, with the trundle bed pulled out, can sleep two. Finally, bedroom four, has a queen bed and windows on two sides.

Your Clear Creek Group concierge will be happy to arrange special, on-property experiences for you as well: a private chef to prepare a feast for a family celebration, a couple’s massage before the fire in the great room, perhaps a sleigh ride through the snowy woods.

Absolutely Amazing!!! The house was perfect for our family, we all loved it!!! A couple of mornings we saw coyotes, but most impressive were the elk & big horn sheep that were there every day, sometimes even in the yard! We will definitely be back! Everyone with The Clear Creek Group were always there to answer any questions & help in any way if needed. We couldn't have had a better vacation!!!

Reviewer Comments:

We just returned from a weeks stay at the home in Elk Refuge. I cried when we had to leave as the entire experience was so magical. From the moment we arrived we were overwhelmed. 1000's of elk, big horn sheep, prong horn antelope, 100's of bison and a bald eagle and that was before we even entered the incredible house! The house is situated on 5 acres and perfectly positioned to give you the best view possible of the Grand Tetons. As soon as pull into the regal entry gate, flanked by two iron elk-you can leave the real world and enter your personal refuge. This house has everything you could possibly want or need. It is decorated with style, comfort and class. The rooms are all very spacious and tastefully proportioned. The family areas give you all the space you need to gather and relax. We were a group of 10 adults and a child 5 years and one 20 months. The layout couldn't have been more perfect. We spent a majority of the time together but were also able to rest and retreat into our own rooms. The kitchen was well stocked with all the basic cooking equipment, dishes, serving pieces, staples, etc. We hired Chef Scott Nechay to do the cooking for us and would highly recommend him. There is not one negative thing to say about this property except that we had to leave! We can't wait to plan our next trip and stay at the House at Elk Refuge. If you have the chance to experience this heaven on earth-don't hesitate. Book this extraordinary home in Jackson, Wyoming and have the vacation of a lifetime! You will be enchanted, amazed and never want to leave.

We recently stayed at On The Elk Refuge with 2 other life-long couples. The home was beautiful and spacious and the views were breathtaking. Our main concern in booking was that we wanted to be close to town and this house was perfect! If you are a star-gazer you will not be disappointed. The night sky is amazing! We loved everything about our time at this gorgeous property!

UNIQUE JACKSON HOLE EXPERIENCE!!!

  • 5 of 5

This house is like no other we have ever stayed in! We have been to this property both with our family in the summer and our friends in the winter. The view of the Tetons cannot be matched anywhere else in Jackson Hole. You are close to town while still having the privacy of the Elk Refuge and very few people, even locals, have stayed on the Elf Refuge. There is wild life all around - during the summer going on a hike in the mountains directly behind the house, watch hang gliders jump off the cliffs from the hot tub and more! During the winter, you have plenty of ski options near by and they are all amazing!!! You may awake to Buffalo and Elk right outside the front gate -

The house is extremely spacious - all of the beds are comfortable!!! You can have a big group stay and never feel cramped... there are plenty of bathrooms, 2 washers/dryers so you never have to worry about clean towels, drying your ski cloths during the winter... The kitchen is also amazing and great for big breakfasts and dinners at the house. All of the furniture and paintings in the home are straight from Jackson Hole and make it feel like you are staying at your own private lodge!!! There are also at least 3 fireplaces in the house as well - so nice during a cold winter night.

This is an A+++++ property and will be a vacation that you will never forget! I will be renting this place for years to come -

This ranch home located in the middle of the 25,000 acre National Elk Refuge but yet only 5 miles out of town; the best of both worlds; sandwiched between the Elk Refuge and the Bridger National Forest. There are many 5-star restaurants in town as well as a wide range of shops/boutiques.
