About John de Bruin

Nadine and I (John) are retired now for the second time. We completed a career in Aerospace in 2003 retiring from the Hughes Aircraft Company. The Hughes Motto was very similar to that of the TV show "Star Trek" i.e. to go where no man has gone before. John was involved with the design and deployment of infrared space systems while Nadine pursued a career in Real Estate. As a child, John had developed a love for the land and cows and upon retiring, we purchased a Ranch and raised grass fed beef, organic pork, chicken and eggs for our community. Farming is a hard life and all consuming and we elected to retire a second time to pursue some of the activities we had put on hold in favor of farming. We still live on our ranch in Lompoc, raise our own meats and enjoy our grandchildren as well as hosting guests from all over the world in our vacation rentals. We love the country lifestyle and are blessed with having our daughter and 3 grandkids live on the ranch with us. We live approximately 6 miles from Hilltop and are available for resolving any and all issues in short order.

Why John de Bruin chose Central Coast

The Shady Oaks Ranch is an amazingly unique property. Upon arriving, you feel a sense of peace and tranquility permeate your whole being. It is like being transported to another world or dimension. Complementing this sense of tranquility are the views and vistas of Buellton, the Santa Ynez Valley and the surrounding mountains. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Cachuma Lake or Gaviota State Beach are excellent places to go picnic and hike. Enjoy wine tasting? The valley is filled with amazing boutique wineries as well as some that are quite size-able and offer a great variety. Shopping? Enjoy history? Visit the two Missions established by the original Spanish Settlers. Visit Solvang for a real shopping experience from clothing to knick knacks to the world's softest socks. Hilltop at Shady Oaks Ranch provides you with a means to escape and yet have a diversity of activities to complement your time away from the hustle and bustle.

What makes this farmhouse unique

When Nadine and I first saw ( I really mean experienced) this property we were awestruck. We just could not leave. Located on 31 acres with means to hike up and down, challenged us to experience the entire range of views as well as the natural habitats of the majestic oaks and wildlife. You literally feel transported to another dimension. Can't say that enough. Come and experience it for yourself.

Unusual layout, but worked out great for our group.

Quiet and relaxing, with room for all 6 of us. We bought a couple of bathmats, the tubs were slippery. Loved the grounds, beautiful views and tons of privacy, and super close to wineries and shopping. Loved it!

Golf Getaway

  • 4 of 5

The Hilltop is a great place to get away from it all relax and enjoy good company. We had a boys golf trip that included 7 of us. Sleeping quarters were tight but everything else was just right. We took full advantage of the spacious dining area to socialize after dinner.

Most of all, we enjoyed sitting outside in the evening enjoying the cool nights and the view of the valley.

Make sure to arrive during daylight, We arrived at dusk and I drove past the driveway twice before I found it. The driveway is a long, winding gravel road that in narrow and steep. It's not as intimidating if you've driven it at least once in the daylight before trying it at night.

Location was excellent, just outside of town and centrally located to the golf courses in the area.

Sweet Mountaintop Abode

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here! It was clean, well-equipped, and welcoming, and the views are spectacular. We were surprised to see that it was so close to everything you need, only a mile off the 101, but you feel away from it all, and completely in nature. The road up the hill to the house needs to be taken slowly due to many major bumps/divots, but once you're there, you're sittin' pretty!

Great views and a nice private, quiet location.

We had a wonderful family birthday/family reunion. This is a large house with lots of flexibility for sleeping arrangements. The owner was extra helpful also. I accidentally left some items at the house, and he was kind enough to mail them back to me!

Gorgeous views

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (+ one small non-shedding dog) enjoyed a relaxing getaway at the Hilltop. The views are amazing! The bedrooms and sitting areas have beautiful decor (think shabby chic) and there is a lot of space for people to spread out in the house and in the yard. The drive up to the house was easy. This home had the best instructions and notes of any house we have ever rented. Seriously. Detailed driving instructions, instructions how to use the remotes, appliances, nearby attractions, restaurants, etc. I appreciated the updated front door lock with your unique code and time limitations, felt very secure. The bath towels are very nice and a generous supply stocked. Every sink had hand soap and paper towels, which is appreciated. The floor plan is unusual, the kitchen is upstairs and on the opposite end of the annex first floor family room. This house would be ideal for a large group, we didn't even use half of the bedrooms.

The only thing that would've made our experience even better, would be some updates to the kitchen and replacing some well used kitchen equipment. Bring your own kitchen supplies (foil, ziplock bags, kitchen sponge, baking sheets, etc) and beach towels. I wish I'd brought a BBQ brush (there wasn't one and the grill needed a cleaning) and mosquito spray & repellant (not all of the windows/doors have screens and there were a lot of mosquitos during our stay). The wifi was not strong, okay for a getaway, but not if you are planning on doing work or streaming videos to your devices. I didn't see any recycling bins, that would've been nice, but I don't know how the trash program is done there.

Overall, a great stay here. Thanks!

The Hilltop at Shady Oaks Ranch is located just minutes from the Santa Rita Appellation, a region first discovered by Richard Sanford to have similar soil and weather to the Burgundy region of France. Since Richard built the first winery in the area, many others have sprung up and we are now famous worldwide for our Pinot Noir's and Chardonnay's. There are many ways to visit the wineries from self guided tours to arranged tours to wine tasting rooms that have an excellent selection of the local wines without the need to travel.

In addition, lake Cachuma is a wonderful resource for fishing, picknicking, and guided nature tours. Other features include Ostrich Land, Firestone Brewery, the Chumash Resort and Casino and a myriad of fine eateries to delight anyone's tastes. In addition, two of the orginal Spanish Missions created here in California are within 20 miles.
