**SOME OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO SEE OR DO & DISTANCE FROM THE COTTAGE:

**NEW**(Depending on current activity) The Active Lava Flow to the ocean can now been seen from a boat trip out of a nearby harbor through a private company, or go on foot via the current access starting point just 15 mins away. You can either walk down a gravel road or rent a bicycle to access the current flow. Every time you go it's a whole new experience, since the geography changes on a daily basis. It's the only place in the U.S. that you can safely see active lava spilling into the ocean creating more land and expanding our island.

**Volcano National Park- See the Kilauea Caldera, explore the many miles of hiking trails, lava tubes, Visitor Center, Guided Nature walks with park ranger, Museum, and our most favorites are hiking through a rainforest to the floor of a dormant volcano crater and then returning at night to view the glow of the crater, it’s amazing! - (30 mins to the park, but currently access to the lava flow viewing is accessible near town of Kalapana about an hour from the park entrance, but only 20 mins from us)

**Kopoho Tide Pools and Wai’opae Marine Sanctuary- Some of the best snorkeling in huge pools filled with coral and amazing fish on the east side of the island. (25 mins)

**Ahalanui Park and Warm Ponds- Experience a beautiful, naturally heated thermal pond with water up to 90 degrees depending on the tide. Enjoy relaxing while looking out to beautiful blue ocean with waves spilling over into your warm thermal pool, free of charge. Located just down the street from the Kopoho tidepools. (25 mins)

Whale Watching- (Seasonal) see the Humpback Whales migrating Dec-Mar. right from the shore- (10 mins)

Relax and take a Beautiful scenic drive through the lush green side and stop at one of the many magnificent waterfalls.

Rainbow Falls- (15-20 mins)

Akaka Falls and Nature walk- (25 mins)

Botanical Gardens- (20 mins)

Kaumana Caves Lava Tube- Explore a 23 mile long (the whole length is not accessible, but there’s plenty to explore and enjoy) lava tube in it’s natural state, and see the amazing way the island was formed. (20 mins)

Mauna Kea- Watch the sunset or sunrise and see what the island looks like from above the clouds at 10,000 ft. elevation and for those who love the stars there’s World Class Star Gazing with Narrated free tours, as the different planets rise. (1 hr drive)

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo- It's the ONLY natural tropical rainforest zoo in the U.S. and it's free! AND it’s is less than 10 minutes away.

Visit Black Sand Beaches almost guaranteed to see a few Turtles sun bathing.

Don't forget the culture of 'Old Hawaii'--- in Pahoa Village visit the old wooden boardwalk and dine at quaint restaurants & feel like you've stepped back in time; or stroll through downtown Hilo Town learn about the history and tradition of Hawaiian Culture through live shows, storytelling, music, film, and Hula by visiting the Historic Palace Theatre since 1925, the Tsunami Museum, Art Galleries, local Farmer's Market with organic fruits and veggie's, and don't forget the Shave Ice! So many things to do for every type of traveler.

We provide our recommendations of places to eat, shop, Day Trip's and Activity Brochures, car rental companies, timing your vacation, and helping to personalize your vacation to your families lifestyle. We are here to help you plan more than just where you’ll sleep, so you can take the time to relax and decide how you will enjoy this wonderful place.

Aloha and Mahalo!

About Shauna Knutsen

We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, we have two children Cindy and Zane, and our nephew Jayvan and he's the only one still at home.

We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation.

We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Shauna Knutsen purchased this house in 2012

Why Shauna Knutsen chose Hilo

We chose this area since we love the beauty, the tropical rain at night, the Coqui frogs singing, and the area is centrally located to our favorite places! And we love the easy going friendly laid back atmosphere.

What makes this house unique

We love that the Cottage is a tropical retreat in a semi-rural country setting on paved roads in a private family community giving us the experience of "Real Hawaii Living" Since it is a private home on over 1/4 acre, there's room for us to enjoy the tropical setting and fruit trees with usually some type of ripe fruit for to pick, eat and enjoy. We love gardening and being able to plant something and it just grows into something beautiful to eat or look at.

We also enjoy the country feeling so when you look outside you see nature, you hear the birds, Coqui Frogs, (and lately sometimes even a rooster to remind us of the country) and not the noise, fast pace, and hustle of the city.

There's also some great farmers markets close by, with fresh fruits, vegetables, and local foods and crafts, and even local music to relax and enjoy in the open air.

Unlike Hotels, both the Coqui Cottage and the Ohana studio are set up so that you don't need to have much other than your clothes and toothbrush, and you will feel just like it's home with all the comforts and amenities giving you that relaxed at home feel, so after a long day of exploring all the beauty and unique experiences the Big Island has to offer, we can either pick up dinner on our way back and come "home" and relax, and many times we enjoy a home cooked meal that we threw in the crock pot or oven before we left in the morning, and sometimes when we have friends with us, we love to throw something on the BBQ and eat dinner in the screened in outdoor living space with our family and friends.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Making this charming place available for world weary travelers was a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you for the clean sheets, nice towels, the complete instruction tips on what and where. You will find everything needed here and the best coffee beans this side of anywhere!

The cottage caretaker (Rich) has a good natured presence. I've told all my friends about you and Coqui Cottage. Don't be surprised if some of them beats a path to your door!

So much thought and care put into this home

  • 5 of 5

As VRBO owners ourselves we were incredibly impressed with the amount of effort and thoughtfulness put into this perfect home. Everything we could possibly need for our trip was readily available and clearly labeled everywhere in the house, the owners were more than happy to provide assistance and recommendations for our itinerary.

The beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed the sounds of the tree frogs outsides at night.

We would absolutely stay here again and will recommend to friends for their trips.

  • 5 of 5

Great location, very clean, well furnished with comfy beds. Literally everything anyone would need while on vacation here. Very responsive hosts. Near a small quaint but convenient to Hilo and Volcanoes National Park. We would definitely try to stay here again if we ever make it back to this island.

nice place to stay for hilo/volcano side home base

  • 5 of 5

we enjoyed our time here. we split our vacation time with half on hilo/volcano side and half on kona. this is where we stayed for the hilo/volcano side. it was a good position to access all the east side attractions for us. the internet worked real well, which is nice in such a rural location. it was easy to check in and out, and worked well for us. we probably were here during the hottest time of the year, so it did get a bit warm in the house on a couple days (no air conditioning is common here) but we worked through that part with lots of fans. in a good way it felt like you were in a rural getaway. the lanai/screened in porch was our favorite place to hang out. very spacious!

Great vacation cottage

  • 5 of 5

We felt right at home with all the amenities and kitchen supplies. There were plenty of suggested activities to explore around the cottage and all the supplies you would need: snorkeling, spelunking, or just chilling at the beach. We would definitely stay here again!
