Overview

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 8-11)

Enjoy this natural paradise on the water in Boone NC just minutes from the Hebron Falls, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk NC. Hot tub, foosball table, firepit, gas firestove, and large deck all located in a private reserve. This large, open home accommodates up to twelve.

This beautiful cedar cabin is right on the river and not only offers proximity to fly fishing but also is located in one of the largest land and wildlife preserves in the area, and only a mile from the popular Hebron Falls. Best of all, you are still just five minutes from downtown Boone and Appalachian State University. This lodge-style rustic home is perfect for families, fishing buddies or corporate groups, and has the added convenience of single level living.

The house has a large all wood living room and kitchen with cathedral ceiling, exposed beams, and lots of windows to look out on the natural surroundings. There is plenty of room for everyone to congregate for games, TV, or just enjoying each other's company while cooking. The large deck overlooks the river with outdoor dining area and large hot tub.

Wounded Fork has three bedrooms plus a sleeping loft and four baths. The master bedroom has a private bath with whirlpool tub plus a walk in shower, and a separate wing on the house holds the other two bedrooms, each with doors out onto their own deck and full bath with walk in shower. This wing of the house also has a separate entrance, gas fireplace and playroom with twin trundle daybed, foosball table and combination table with pool and air hockey.

This eclectic property has several other cozy corner rooms to retreat to and curl up with a good book, sit and daydream, or even tie your own flies in the fly fishing tie station. And if you can't get away from it all, bring it with you as there is even an office and WIFI. This office has a beautiful hand-built desk with soothing surroundings so you can work and relax at the same time.

One of the best parts of this house is that the Boone Fork of the Watauga River adjoins the property. You are allowed to fly fish or wade within the property line to the middle of the river and it offers the best fly fishing to be had. The Boone Fork is the water coming from Price Lake on the Blue Ridge Parkway, with Simms Creek, Green Branch, and Bee Tree Creek (all on Park Service Land) flowing into the Boone Fork before entering Twin Rivers. Boone Fork is the only stream in the entire Watauga River Basin that is classified as "Outstanding Resource Waters." The NC Division of Water Quality classified the water quality of the Creek as "excellent." The Creek also supports exemplary natural communities and a number of rare plant and animal species.

This cabin on the river truly offers a unique opportunity for solitude or solidarity in one of the most beautiful and enticing natural settings available in the High Country.

Handicap accessible with limitations.

Wounded Fork has paved access for all but the last mile.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Loved the past weekend-stayed for a wedding down the road. It is hard to go back home after the wonderful time we spent here. This was a great retreat from the stress of our daughters wedding. We look forward to returning again in years to come.

Nice and Spacious

  • 4 of 5

The positives are the cabin has plenty of seating and kitchen area is nice. Great setting and nice view of the stream. There are plenty of beds and space for everyone to spread out. The hot tub was nice and was nice towels were provided. The whirlpool tub was also nice. Location is nice. Easy to access (but google maps doesn't seem to work). The TV and channel selection was great in the livingroom. This cabin can accommodate a broad range of guests, young and old.

A few down sides: The deck down by the river mentioned in a prior review in June hasn't been addressed and is a hazard and should be avoided. Also the ladder leading to the loft is very steep and must be climbed with great caution. The kids were disappointed the fly fishing is catch and release only in this part of the river but they did enjoy spending time in the water. The refrigerator freezes milk (there is a note to not change settings so probably a known issue).

Overall a nice place to stay.

Updates needed for this listing.

  • 2 of 5

The photos shown do not represent the property as it is now. The landing that's at the end of the stairs (that lead down to the river) needs to be repaired. It is unusable in it's current condition. Go to the creek at your own peril.

All outdoor furniture needs to be replaced or updated. We were unable to enjoy the beautiful outdoor surroundings due to the condition of the furniture. The A/C in one wing of the house did not work, nor did the light bulbs in multiple locations. (Bathrooms, bedrooms, back decks, and entryway.) I called the realty company to inform them of the lighting problems, but no corrective action was taken during our week long stay. Overall it was a beautiful spot on the mountain, but the cabin needs more frequent maintenance.

Wounded Fork Excellent

  • 5 of 5

A great place for a large family gathering. 12-15 minutes from downtown and ASU is more accurate but not really an issue for us.

We had a wonderful time in the house and the great room was so big that we could all have a great family reunion. Cannot wait to come back in the spring.
