About Alison Swift (owner family member)

I am the youngest of Hop and Pam Swift's 5 daughters. My parents bought our Chalet in 1963 and our family spent many happy ski seasons skiing at Mittersill and Cannon; skiing over the saddle from the top of Cannon to the top of Mittersill and from the Cannon Rathskellar (after a few beers) on the X-country trails back home (on downhill skis). Our Chalet is a perfect house for entertaining, playing games and relaxing with a big or small group; Our house has unique characteristics; including a Moose (Elmer), bongo drums and a balcony overlooking the living room where we had to entertain our parents friends at their cocktail hour with music or skits. In our lifetimes, we've watched Mittersill close and reopen, the 'Old Man of the Mountain' fall and the Franconia Notch Parkway replace the old route that passed Clark's trained bears. It is still as wonderful as ever and we still convene all of our families there between Xmas and New Years.

Why Alison Swift (owner family member) chose White Mountains

It is on Mittersill Mountain, in the Mittersill Alpine Village It is close to all the Ski 93 ski areas and about 20 minutes to Bretton Woods and the Mount Washington Hotel. Nearby Littleton and Lincoln provide regular grocery chains and shopping, the town of Franconia has everything you need in a pinch. The location is near Echo Lake, Lafayette Hiking trails, the Flume, Scenic views, waterfalls and several lakes. A favorite summer attraction of ours is Clark's trained bears, see or www.scout/me/things-to-do-near-franconia-nh/ for year-round outdoor activities & other resources around the Franconia area

What makes this chalet unique

The views from the breakfast table are beautiful any time of the year. The water comes from a babbling brook on the side of the house and the air is clear and fresh. The area is peaceful and relaxing and very cozy on a snowy evening, especially with a big warm fire in the huge living room.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Nice place bad owner

  • 2 of 5

The place itself was beautiful! the overlooks were gorgeous and the house was spacious and comfortable.

There were some issues. The furnace broke the day we were to arrive: in the furnace getting fixed there was no way to control the temperature: it was 80+ degrees the entire time and the air was so dry. There was also some miscommunication between the property owner and manager: they told you to put the trash in two different places, and the fridge was not cleaned out by the previous occupants.

HUGE NEGATIVE ABOUT THE OWNER::: I received a letter about a week later, noting property damage that was not there upon my departure. everything from candle wax on the antlers of the moose. She live's in california and does not see the property, relies on the manager. NEVER went near the moose. Furthermore, offered photographic evidence to prove otherwise and she never responded.

Owner's Response: We bent over backwards to make this renter's stay possible as the furnace died that morning. We replaced it in time for her to still enjoy her weekend. Even though she had our contact information, this renter allowed the heat to run at 80 degrees during her stay and for 4 days after, which melted candles and caused other unprecedented and expensive property damage. Her group broke a chaise lounge and left cigarette butts outside on the ground, which froze in the snow. This is the first time in over 10 years of renting this house that the renter didn't respect our property and went out of her way to be nasty when I asked her to be responsible for the property damage incurred. I would warn other VRBO owners to steer clear of her if she wants to rent your place. Luckily, our experience with renting our family house has been mostly positive; the last 2 large groups have been the exception. We will be limiting our house to 8 adults max for future rentals. BTW, I have photographic evidence of the damage too.

Clean family home close to it all

  • 4 of 5

This is a clean home with great views located close to all the White Mountain activities. It is an older home but clean, cozy and functional. Plenty of room for all. Owner offered any assistance and I did have to call with questions. She was very responsive and accommodating managing this home from California. If you are looking for five star property you will have to pay the five star price. This was a great bargain in the mountains. This was fine for my family's long weekend. Thank you for sharing your home with us. My family liked it and would consider coming back.

Owner's Response: Our chalet is a family house, not a hotel. As with any house, there is a limited capacity for hot water. When hot water is exhausted, it takes about 20-30 minutes for the hot water to replenish. The house is cleaned before every rental; if there was dust on the furniture, it was an exception to the rule. The balcony room is really only appropriate for kids for a few reasons. Going forward, I will limit the house to 8 adults max.

A chalet in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

I was pleasantly surprised by the size and space of the chalet. Very quaint. picturesque views, clean linens, lots of towels that actually pick up water. The washer and dryer were an added benefit. The long family dining room table allowed us to all eat together and play many hands of Scat. nice location accessible to restaurants stores and scenic routes and clarks trading post. Fun was had by all and would love to return for the fall foliage season.

Great house, great location, will rent again

  • 4 of 5

First, the best praise is that I cannot wait to rent this house again. It's a perfect house with lots of space. The owner's description is very accurate, so I'll spare the details of the rooms. I will add that the owner was very responsible and responsive, and solved our one issue immediately. If Cannon weather isn't so great, the house is about 30 minutes to Waterville Valley and about 20 minutes to Bretton Woods.

Everything we needed and more

  • 4 of 5

This house has a lot of great things going for it, and only a few not so great things. First, the good. The kitchen, dining area, and main living room are all generally open, creating a giant common area where everyone can do their own thing, or be part of the group, all in the same space. It was really conducive to a fun environment for our reunion ski trip. Nothing was very fancy, but it has everything and it all worked...this is exactly what we wanted. As a renter, I hate rates that make me think I've paying for the owners remodeling efforts...not the case here - just a clean, big, fun, COMFORTABLE ski house with everything you need and nothing you don't.

Good proximity to Cannon, but not really a walk. Parking was a bit of an issue, which is really the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. Only two spots at the unit, so with a full house you'll need to shuttle cars around. Not a big deal, but not great either. Would not inform a decision to come back or not.

Only other negative I can think of is the long dining table was a little wobbly...again, very minor in the grand scheme of what was a near perfect house for a guys ski trip getaway.

I would not hesitate to rent this house again if I was traveling to the Franconia area. Big, comfortable, affordable, and without the pretentious silliness you find near most ski mountains these days.

Owner's Response: Hey Chris - Thanks so much for your positive and constructive review. I hadn't considered the need for overflow parking with big groups. Various neighbors and friends have extra parking and parking in any chalet that is empty is usually OK. The house across the street and to the right belongs to a friend of ours; if you rent again, I will make sure that I clear some extra parking for you. Also, I know that the dining room table is wobbly. We'll either reinforce it or get a new one. We appreciate your taking the time to write a review and my family agrees that the house is convenient, comfortable and great for a big group. FYI, you can ski across from the Mittersill Chairlift to Cannon and back when the Mittersill chairlift is running. We grew up skiing on Mittersill and you could ski over the "saddle" and ski down Mittersill right into our backyard. I wish Mittersill would fully reopen. It was a decent mountain in the 60s and 70s.
