Lovely home short walk to the village shops

Bedrooms 2
Space 2,100 sq. ft.
Property type house

About the property

2 bedroom relaxing, romantic, seclude cottage on 3 acres of forested tranquility

You have the whole house to yourselves. Tapawingo is an older, rustic two story cabin / cottage which we are continuously upgrade. Set on 3 acres of forest, gardens and a pond, the house is secluded and very private. Ideal for a romantic getaway, honeymoon or just to totally relax and disconnect. Great place to read from our personal library.

Downstairs is a French country kitchen set up for serious cooking, with fridge, stove, dishwasher and microwave, cozy living room, the bathroom with toilet, sink and double headed shower. A large screened in porch area with sofa and comfy chairs and outdoor dining table is most inviting.

Or you can dine on the three tear open decks surrounded by our forest. Here is the outdoor fire place for a bonfire. On the entrance deck on other side of the house is a charcoal BBQ.

Upstairs are the two bedrooms with queen beds, one with small deck, a TV den and the second bathroom with sink and claw-footed iron bath tub.

It was here that Neal Petersen and Billie Baldwin wrote the National Outdoor Book Award winner, Neal's autobiography "Journey of a Hope Merchant" and Neal's solo around the world racing yacht is on the property.

Ride the tandem to the village 5 min away and get locally caught, fresh shrimp at the local store on the dock. Dine in one of the four spots to eat, go for hikes in the forest or kayak in the rivers and intercoastal water way. So much to do, just relax at Tapawingo and read our books.

Absolutely NO PETS and NO YOUNG CHILDREN. Please do not even ask, as the answer is NO. If these rules are broken we will withhold the entire deposit. We live by the Golden Rule and Karma, and willing to help in any way we can, but expect our guests to respect our home and behave accordingly.

Romantic, perfect place to relax.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cottage. It's the perfect spot to relax, away from it all. However, it's still close to Charleston, a town you should not miss to visit.

The cottage is very clean with a superb equipped kitchen. The cosy bedrooms make you want to have a sleep in every morning. But our favorite momets were to enjoy the patio with its beautiful view into the garden.

We would definitely come back for another stay.

Owner's Response: Sandy and her family were great guests. I appreciate their communication, excitement and positve feed back as they discovered our home and activities in the area. Now that they had a wonderful experience at our Charleston home, I look forward to them visiting our exotic Dominican Island vacation rental next.

Peaceful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

What a peaceful retreat! Everything was just as described! Except the kitchen..... WOW! Words just can't describe how awesome it is! There was every tool and gadget you would ever need to cook any meal! If you plan to stay here, just know, you have everything you need! Then serving the meal on delightful platters and

The bed in the master bedroom was very conducive to rest!

Lots of time was spent on the awesome screened-in back porch. (No mosquitos!)

Pam, the owner's contact person, was very easy to communicate with. Answered questions promptly!

We didn't get a chance to eat in McClellanville, so we will be back to do that! We have family in Georgetown and Mount Plesant, so Tapawingo was located between the two.

Thank you for sharing your "House of Joy"!

Owner's Response: Joyce, so glad that you found our home to be the perfect place for relaxation and connecting with family! Tapawingo is very nurturing to us too, it's the place for peace, quiet, cooking, reading and reflection! Agree, it's a lovely kitchen, thank you for appreciating it. I have made many amazing meals in that kitchen with the morning sun inspiring me to create and eat! Hope you had a chance to ride the tandem through town, or to stop by the seafood store by the docks to buy some great fresh shrimp to cook. Thank you for taking good care of our home and we hope one day, you will have a chance to return. Darlene & Neal Petersen

Owner's Response: Linda was a dream guest, very communicative, respectful, the house was left, as if she were never there! But she was, as she sent us a msg when she arrived as to how much she loved our home. We would recommend Linda to any property owner and welcome her back to Tapawingo anytime. The Petersen's

Typical cabin.

  • 1 of 5

We rented this home because we had to evacuate Florida due to Hurricane Irma. We were very disappointed that there was no television or internet and we had bad cell phone connection. They don't allow pets which is fine because I put my animals in a hurricane safe shelter. However, I was interrogated repeatedly by the owners wife asking if I had a dog with me which I did not. The day after we checked out when we returned to our Hurricane destroyed home we received a nasty email saying the owner found dog hair in her home. This is very likely as we had spend hours in a car with our pets, so we were filled with dog hair. After having returned to my destroyed home, the last thing I needed was to receive this nasty accusatory email calling me filthy. I was not on a vacation, I was there because my town had a mandatory evacuation, my family and I were a mess. We put blankets over all furniture to ensure it stayed clean and we left the home in better condition than we found it. This home is old, old furniture, had a strong mildew odor and the owner has no business renting out her home if she is going to send out nasty emails to a family that was there for emergency reasons.

Owner's Response: Staci booked knowing our no pet rule, no TV nor internet & older home (1980) in our listing description. Our home is well-cared for & the furniture is not tattered, worn or soiled. We know sometimes folks evacuate with their loving pet & we wanted to be sure that they understood we could not have pets in the house due to my high allergies. Three times my wife requested confirmation via text & finally received a "No Mame" response. Staci requested a late checkout due to weather & left. They then returned to our home hours later, notifying us after they re-entered. We offered to work with them if they had to stay another night as Staci mentioned they were tight on money. In our guest book they wrote a lovely note of how much they enjoyed our home & would return. Pam arrived to clean & was aghast. Tapawingo has been rented weekly, last check out 4 days before their arrival & Pam is meticulous about cleaning our home. The photos Pam took, were shocking. You would never let any guests who leaves a place in this condition into your home. Our home had been prepared for the storm with all the outdoor cushions, rugs brought in. Pam found the large rug hanging over the outside rail in the rain with stains & stank of pee. All the cushions for the screened porch sofa were left for the driving rain to soak. The living room rug was beyond description in mud & stains. All our furniture had mud & black dog hairs all over, including the guest bed linens. The table cloth was used to cover the couch in the living room. Still the couch was soiled with stains and smelling of pee. We found dog food on the kitchen floor & the bedspread in washing machine still covered in black hair & wet dog food. There was mud tracked into the house all over. Even the toilets were left filthy. I messaged them to tell them how filthy they had left our home & we would not be returning their $100 deposit due to breaking the no pet rules & the amount of work to clean up (costing way beyond the deposit). Staci turned nasty. She is deceitful, vindictive & disrespectful to ones property. We are on the 3rd day of cleaning up their mess. In her own review here she admits to spending 3 hrs in her car with her pets. Suppose they had no pets - then did they pee on the rugs, shed black dog hairs, track mud on furniture & eat dog food off the floor? Tapawingo has been restored to her original beauty, has been thoroughly cleaned, stains removed, smells good again & back up to our standards ready for guests.

The Perfect "Home Base" for our Eclipse 2017 Trip

  • 5 of 5

We decided we would be coming to the area to see the Great American Eclipse & I wanted a place that was private & intimate. I found "Tapawingo" on Home Away & fell in love with it as soon as I saw the pictures! What luck!!!

My husband, myself & our adult son stayed for four nights. We loved it; tranquil, rustic, filled with artsy charm & everything you need to make "a home away from home". You are surrounded by things that Neal & his wife have collected on their travels & have displayed throughout for their guests to enjoy, including a library of books.

We were very happy to be able to come back to relaxation "in the woods" and comfortable beds after our outings to Bulls Island (for the Eclipse), Georgetown, the cute little village of McClellanville & Charleston. We especially LOVED that screen porch. We gathered there every morning to have our coffee & every evening to talk about our day. I read some of Neal's book on that porch; a remarkable man with an amazing story. One morning we even heard a rooster crowing from a residence nearby! Having a washer & dryer was also a real plus.

I recommend a stop at "The Cottage Gift Shop" in McClellenville for authentic handmade gifts from area artisans & Moe's BBQ for ribs in Georgetown (YUMMM). If you're adventurous & like to hike & swim & want to see a truly "wild" beach, book a ride on the ferry at Garris landing & spend the day on Bulls Island. Swimming on the pristine beach there is something you'll never forget.

I know we will be back because we felt so at home here & we want to visit Bull's Island again.

Thank you, Neal, for making your charming home available to us. We made memories which we will never forget.

Owner's Response: Thank you Lisa. Lisa and her family were great guests. They left our home just like they found it, even better as they left behind an amazing gift for me that I will cherish. Easy to work with, great communication and totally respectful. Looking forward to having them back or at our Dominican Republic home.

About Neal Petersen

I am a published award winning author having won the National Outdoor Book Award for "Journey of a Hope Merchant" which I wrote at this home. Darlene and I travel globally, living part of the year in the mountains of the Dominican Republic and part time on our yacht. As a professional adventurer, I did two solo races around the globe plus many other trans-ocean events. Much of my time is spent flying around the globe opening or closing conferences as a keynote speaker. PBS featured me in a national documentary, "No Barriers, the Neal Petersen Story"

Neal Petersen purchased this house in 2000

Why Neal Petersen chose McClellanville

This was the first home Darlene and I bought six months after we got married. We both have roamed the world before meeting and wanted a place to call home and build a garden. I wanted a forest with a pond and oak trees. Darlene wanted a French country kitchen to prepare foods from our travels. We both got what we wanted. But then the adventure bug called us again and we headed south to the Caribbean. In the mountain of Jarabacoa in the Dominican Republic we have built another home which is also available for rent. Here we have extensive gardens, decks, views, waterfalls. Less time is now spent in the US, but I still return a few times a year to play in my original garden.

What makes this house unique

When we drove up the driveway in the spring of 2000, we knew we had found our home even before entering the structure. The oak trees and pond called out to me. I saw where I would put the big decks and fire pit, how I would build the wood fired pizza oven and where on the porch I would place the double swing, or just how we would sit on the screened in porch listening to the raindrops on the tin roofs as we dined around the huge outdoor dining table. This is what we have created and now share with you when you visit.
