2 bedroom relaxing, romantic, seclude cottage on 3 acres of forested tranquility
You have the whole house to yourselves. Tapawingo is an older, rustic two story cabin / cottage which we are continuously upgrade. Set on 3 acres of forest, gardens and a pond, the house is secluded and very private. Ideal for a romantic getaway, honeymoon or just to totally relax and disconnect. Great place to read from our personal library.
Downstairs is a French country kitchen set up for serious cooking, with fridge, stove, dishwasher and microwave, cozy living room, the bathroom with toilet, sink and double headed shower. A large screened in porch area with sofa and comfy chairs and outdoor dining table is most inviting.
Or you can dine on the three tear open decks surrounded by our forest. Here is the outdoor fire place for a bonfire. On the entrance deck on other side of the house is a charcoal BBQ.
Upstairs are the two bedrooms with queen beds, one with small deck, a TV den and the second bathroom with sink and claw-footed iron bath tub.
It was here that Neal Petersen and Billie Baldwin wrote the National Outdoor Book Award winner, Neal's autobiography "Journey of a Hope Merchant" and Neal's solo around the world racing yacht is on the property.
Ride the tandem to the village 5 min away and get locally caught, fresh shrimp at the local store on the dock. Dine in one of the four spots to eat, go for hikes in the forest or kayak in the rivers and intercoastal water way. So much to do, just relax at Tapawingo and read our books.

About Neal Petersen
I am a published award winning author having won the National Outdoor Book Award for "Journey of a Hope Merchant" which I wrote at this home. Darlene and I travel globally, living part of the year in the mountains of the Dominican Republic and part time on our yacht. As a professional adventurer, I did two solo races around the globe plus many other trans-ocean events. Much of my time is spent flying around the globe opening or closing conferences as a keynote speaker. PBS featured me in a national documentary, "No Barriers, the Neal Petersen Story"
Neal Petersen purchased this House in 2000
Why Neal Petersen chose McClellanville
This was the first home Darlene and I bought six months after we got married. We both have roamed the world before meeting and wanted a place to call home and build a garden. I wanted a forest with a pond and oak trees. Darlene wanted a French country kitchen to prepare foods from our travels. We both got what we wanted. But then the adventure bug called us again and we headed south to the Caribbean. In the mountain of Jarabacoa in the Dominican Republic we have built another home which is also available for rent. Here we have extensive gardens, decks, views, waterfalls. Less time is now spent in the US, but I still return a few times a year to play in my original garden.
What makes this House unique
When we drove up the driveway in the spring of 2000, we knew we had found our home even before entering the structure. The oak trees and pond called out to me. I saw where I would put the big decks and fire pit, how I would build the wood fired pizza oven and where on the porch I would place the double swing, or just how we would sit on the screened in porch listening to the raindrops on the tin roofs as we dined around the huge outdoor dining table. This is what we have created and now share with you when you visit.

A quiet, rustic haven for nature lovers
We very much enjoyed our stay at this hideaway surrounded by 3 acres of wild nature. The rustic flavor might not appeal to everyone, but it’s just the sort of place I enjoy. It feels homey instead of sterile and “plastic” like a modern hotel. We spent a good deal of time the first day just wandering around the property where the wild azalea, wisteria, and some wildflowers were in bloom, a turtle was sunning in the pond, and birdsongs serenaded our stroll in this quiet haven. Sadly, it was unseasonably too cold most of the time to enjoy meals on the huge screened porch, but the kitchen was well-equipped for preparing meals. Pam, our local host, was very helpful in providing tips on where to get groceries, walks we might like, etc. – and we followed her lead and enjoyed several excursions she suggested. The only thing missing was Neal Petersen himself, who sounds like a fascinating individual from what we read in his book, which is available in the house. There is an extensive library, which covers a broad variety of topics, including some of my favorite books as well. There are so many places we didn’t get to see, so if we return to this area, we wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
We had a great weekend at the cottage. Lovely place and very responsive owner and caretaker.
Such a special place!
Tapawingo is a special place in lovely McClellanville. My second trip was just as comfortable and enjoyable as the first one. I will keep going back to Tapawingo. Love it!
Thank you Cindy, so happy to hear you once again enjoyed our home, Tapawingo. We have created over the years a place of nurturing, comfort, tranquility, a great kitchen to cook and a place to just kick-back and just BE.......and if you enjoy reading - there are plenty of diverse books in the bookshelves. You are always welcome back and think about Spring some time when the azaleas and hydrangeas are in bloom everywhere!

Thanks Darren for taking such good care of our home. Glad to know you had a great weekend. Look forward to having you back in McClellanville and also consider our mountain HA rental property in the Dominican Republic. Great home and lots of outdoor activities!
What a peaceful retreat! Everything was just as described! Except the kitchen..... WOW! Words just can't describe how awesome it is! There was every tool and gadget you would ever need to cook any meal! If you plan to stay here, just know, you have everything you need! Then serving the meal on delightful platters and
The bed in the master bedroom was very conducive to rest!
Lots of time was spent on the awesome screened-in back porch. (No mosquitos!)
Pam, the owner's contact person, was very easy to communicate with. Answered questions promptly!
We didn't get a chance to eat in McClellanville, so we will be back to do that! We have family in Georgetown and Mount Plesant, so Tapawingo was located between the two.
Thank you for sharing your "House of Joy"!
Joyce, so glad that you found our home to be the perfect place for relaxation and connecting with family! Tapawingo is very nurturing to us too, it's the place for peace, quiet, cooking, reading and reflection! Agree, it's a lovely kitchen, thank you for appreciating it. I have made many amazing meals in that kitchen with the morning sun inspiring me to create and eat! Hope you had a chance to ride the tandem through town, or to stop by the seafood store by the docks to buy some great fresh shrimp to cook. Thank you for taking good care of our home and we hope one day, you will have a chance to return.

Step back to simpler, quieter times for a little while. And don’t forget to stargaze!
The house, grounds, town, and most of all the hosts (both local and from afar), are the best!
Linda was a dream guest, very communicative, respectful, the house was left, as if she were never there! But she was, as she sent us a msg when she arrived as to how much she loved our home. We would recommend Linda to any property owner and welcome her back to Tapawingo anytime.
Using our home as your you can stroll or ride bikes to the village. There is a restaurants on the main street or travel further to some of the historic homes. Head to the shrimp dock and buy a few pounds of fresh shrimp just off the boat. You can bring your boat and buy a launching permit from the town office and go play on the inter coastal water way, or head out into Bulls Bay. Or just bring your kayak, or rent from a local outfit to play on the water or in the rivers in the Francis Marion forest where there are hikes for just about every kind of adventurer. Visit the birds of prey sanctuary or go for a stroll at the old Gun Club property. So much within 5 miles to do, or venture further south to Charleston 40 min drive away, or Georgetown 25 min north. Golf, beaches, food - all in the area.
