We completed this guest house at the end of October, 2012. It is adjacent to a 1910 bungalow that I restored in the Mt. Baker neighborhood. You enter through a gated patio. There is one bedroom and bath on the ground floor that has radiant heat flooring and an exposed wood ceiling. Upstairs is a sitting area, leading out to a deck. A galley kitchen with vintage Spark stove and cozy breakfast nook is to the back.
I have built houseboats similar to the one in Sleepless in Seattle and wanted this structure to have the functionality and clean lines of a boat. I'm a woodworker so I also wanted to build in much of the furniture so that the space was uncluttered and had its own personality.
I've built houses for forty years and this is a jewel. Because of the radiant heat flooring, it is warm and comfortable. There are skylights that bring in light, and a great deal of attention has been paid to the lighting. Lake Washington is a short walk for a swim in the summer. It is extremely quiet neighborhood and yet it's only a twenty minute drive downtown or to the University.
If you ever wanted to stay in a house like you'd find in Dwell Magazine, this is it.
My husband and I recently spent two weeks in Jake's place. The guest house is very well equipped and attractive. It is actually nicer than the photos. Jake was very helpful in answering questions. There is a supermarket nearby and the wonderful neighborhood of Columbia City is less than a mile away, with a great natural supermarket, weekly farmer's market and all kinds of good restaurants.
The purpose of coming to Seattle was for Seafair. The location of this property was extremely convenient as we could walk to the Seafair grounds. The guest house was clean and comfortable to stay in. It was also nice to have a kitchen so we could prepare our own food, thus making it a home away from home. It was nice and quiet and very easy to find. If given the opportunity I would definitely stay here again!!
Located in a safe neighborhood a few blocks from eating, drinking and groceries in the South Rainier area.. Not far from a cool gentrified district and Seward park. Handy to Downtown. Spartan, modern, funky unit with everything you need. Very Quiet area. Priced right with no add ons. Worked well for us.
Jake Ehlers's vacation home is an interesting design, uncluttered and clean. The upper floor has numerous windows and a door to a small deck for good airflow. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. The location is in a nice, quiet neighborhood and convenient to major roads for sightseeing and driving to the airport. We enjoyed our stay.
This is a cute, quirky rental home, which I loved. The owner built it in a some-what boat style, and the charm is all over it in the details.
We stayed with our 6 year old granddaughter who loved the galley look for the table. She slept upstairs on the built in couch which doubled as a twin bed.
We slept downstairs in the bedroom, which included a round light to give you a port hole feel to the room.
This is not for everyone. If you have difficulty with stairs you may not like going upstairs for the main living floor; i.e. Living room, kitchen, dining area. The bathroom is located downstairs. The rental is located in the back of their main home, and there isn't a wide path to bring your bags up from the street parking. I only mention this because I know it could be difficult for people who have mobility issues.
The kitchen has a cool, old stove that was fun to cook on. The kitchen is well stocked with pans, knives, dishes and cooking utensils. There is a grocery store 3 minutes from there. The backyard is lovely to look at from the rental. They kept plenty of linens for use upstairs or if you did get cold. I found the bed to be quite comfy. They have TV with the channel listings, which is helpful when traveling. Loved having a portable fan to sleep with at night. The shower was nice and wide and the water pressure was wonderful. They do have a dog who was perfectly well behaved and there were no dog messes in the backyard to worry about.
It did not take us long to get downtown to visit Pike's Market or the Space Needle. I loved being out of the hustle and bustle of downtown, yet close enough that it really wasn't difficult to get to at all. Plenty of restaurants nearby if you don't want to cook. (On our first night in we stopped at the grocery store and bought ready-made food there.)
The owners are lovely and easy to work with.
