Overview

About the property

Three House, 10 Bedrooms, 7 Baths, (Sleeps 4-20)

La Loubiere lies at the foothills of the Luberon Natural Park, surrounded by beautiful countryside, in the ten acre grounds of a 16th century chateau. An ideal location for hikers and mountain bikers with its proximity to the Durance River, it offers a contrast, with the beautiful city of Aix-en-Provence, just twenty minutes away.

The accommodation is spread over three houses which are separate and private. They can be let separately, sleeping four, six or ten respectively, or together, making an ideal location for a group/family of up to twenty.

Each of the three houses have been lovingly restored by the owners to provide modern accommodation, whilst retaining the character and original features of the old buidings, with stone walls, beams and tiled floors. The interiors are furnished to a high standard with beautiful fabrics and bed linens in a Provencal style. Satellite internet.

La Grange, once a stone barn, now offers accommodation for ten, in two double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and three twin bedded rooms with a large family bathroom. The open plan kitchen/dining/livig area is vast(1000 sq feet, with high ceilings, a huge fireplace and comfortable sofas - plenty of space for everyone. There is a laundry room with an additional toilet and basin. The raised terrace is south and west fcing and has views of the swimming pool, surrounding countryside and beautiful sunsets.

Les Platanes, a charming stone cottage, sleeping four, is steeped in character. The two bedrooms, one double and one twin are fresh and light with Provencal fabris and bedlinen. The open plan kitchen/dining/living room has exposed stone walls and beams and is comfortably furnished with two sofas. The bathroom is bright and airy. There is a private south-facing terrace, with views of the park and adjacent to a grass area, shaded by four large plane trees (Platanes)

Sebastian's House is built into the rocky hillside and sleeps up to six people. It has a cool, bright kitchen and sitting area and leading off this, a large stone built room with a dining table. This room can also be used as a third bedroom, with a queen sized bed. There is a large double bedroom, a twin bedded room and a bathroom on the first floor. Sebastian's House has its own drive way and exterior parking, adjacent to a private, west-facing terrace.

Guests at La Loubiere have their own fenced pool (39-feet by 20-feet) with comfortable loungers to relax on, surrounded by over two acres of grounds, with views of lavender and the thyme and rosemary covered hills. The hard tennis court, which is set in the grounds of the chateau, has been resurfaced in 2017. Guests have unlimited access to the court. The English owners inhabit the chateau, which is set to the east of the property, slightly apart from the houses. However, they are always happy to help or give advice.

The town of Pertuis is three miles from La Loubiere and offers a wide range of shops, from small family bakers to large supermarkets. The area is well served by restaurants and more markets than there are days of the week.

The motorway is only a ten-minute drive away which gives easy access to coastal resorts such as Cassis, Marseille and the Camargue. Also, the cities of Aix en Provence, Avignon and Arles, steeped in culture and history. In contrast there are the famous villages of the Luberon, including Lourmarin, Cucuron, Bonnieux, and La Tour d'Aigues, all easily reached by meandering country routes.

About Deb McDougall

We are originally from England, however, work took us to The Netherlands, when our family was young. Living in mainland Europe gave us plenty of opportunities to explore many different countries, but something always drew us back to southern France for family holidays. We often dreamed of buying an old place to restore when the children had grown up, but then when the situation actually presented itself, we found ourselves moving with three children still in education. Fortunately, none of us has ever regretted it for a second. We had restored old houses before, but taking on a property that was nearly 500 years old, was quite a challenge - often a nightmare, but more often than not full filling a dream. Everyone gets roped in from time to time to help with big projects, like excavating wells and discovering secret passages. The property is so old and has so much history and charater, we feel more like we are its caretakers, rather than the owners.

Deb McDougall purchased this barn in 2002

Why Deb McDougall chose Luberon Area

Actually I think the property chose us, parts of it were so run down, no one else would have been crazy enough to take it on.... but we quickly fell in love with it ... and we like a challenge! It has certainly been a labour of love - a lot of hard work but very rewarding, particularly as we can now see our guests enjoying it as much as we do. This is the most beautiful part of Provence, with the coast only a 45 minute drive away and the lush Luberon hills above us, and the wonderful villages and markets that make Provence unique. There is so much to see and experience, that when we do'remember' to take a day off, we are still discovering news places and 'gems'

What makes this barn unique

The three houses can be rented individually except during July and August, when they are let as a whole as they are very popular with groups of friends and large families who want to holiday together but don't necessarily want to be all under the same roof! There are secluded areas where guests can escape for some quiet time, but plenty of space to enjoy each others company dining al fresco or working off the effects on the tennis court or in the pool. Set in the countryside, 'La Loubiere' is only five minutes drive from a bustling town and a short drive from the numerous Luberon villages and their markets. In contrast Aix-en-Provence, one of the most beautiful cities in France is only twenty minutes drive away. Returning to 'La Loubiere' after a busy day exploring and being able to relax and watch the sun setting with a glass of wine - there is nothing to beat it!

Fantastic stay. HIGHLY recommend.

  • 5 of 5

This property was gorgeous. The location was great (easy to get to Avignon, Marseilles, Aix-en-Provence, and all of the amazing villages in the surrounds). Our family was incredibly comfortable (we took over 2 of the 3 rental spaces). The rentals were very well-equipped with the comforts of home to say the least – excellent kitchen facilities and modern bathrooms. It was great to "come home" and relax and eat local bread, cheese, etc and drink wine...we had fires every night. Deb and Alec were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome. The information they sent us before our trip was fabulous and spot on. Our only regret was not having more time to take advantage of all of their excellent recommendations. They also made a reservation on our behalf for a Michelin star restaurant in the area for Mother's Day brunch. I have eaten all of the world, but this little restaurant (maybe 8 tables) was in my top 3 EVER. In summary, this was everything I hoped for during our first taste of Provence. We will be back.

La Loubiere: topper.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed (my wife and I, children, grand children) with 16 persons in La Loubiere in the first week of may 2015 in the two largest houses. It was marvellous. The information we got in advantage was okay. Very complete houses, Deb and Alec were wonderful. Even the weather was very nice.

We hadden bovendien prima weer. En Deb en Alec zijn hartstikke aardige mensen!

Our second stay at La Loubierre

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay. As before everything was great. It is a perfect location, close to everything but very tranquil. Deb and Alec are very welcoming. We hope to stay again next year. I would recommend La Loubierre to everyone.

Wonderful stay !

  • 5 of 5

We rent the La Grange villa (for 10 adults) in May.

Alec and Deb are such kind and welcoming!

The villa is really spacious, clean and charming. There are 2 double bedrooms (very spacious) on the ground floor with their own bathroom. Upstairs, there 3 rooms with 2 single beds. There is a bathroom on the ground floor too and a laundry room with toilets. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped, so we would cook everything we wanted (cake, bread, pizza, etc.). There is also a TV in the living room and the wi-fi.

Outside there is a big table, so we could eat.

The pool is big enough and well exposed during the day. There is also a tennis court, a trampolline, a ping pong table. Everything is provided : bed linen, bath towel, pool towel, tennis racquet, ping pong racquet, etc.

There are also 2 other villa smaller (for 4 and 6 people). The area is wonderful.

La Loubiere is near Pertuis City, from 10 minutes of a Carrefour market. And it is 25 minutes from Aix-en-Provence and 1 hour from Cassis/Marseille. The region is very beautiful, calmed and rejuvenating.

Deb and Alec are very kind people and they respected our privacy during the stay.

We will return to La Loubiere with pleasure!

Perfect Week in Provence

  • 5 of 5

The houses were beautiful and the owners were accessible and accommodating. There were a lot of bees though and the toilets are sensitive but neither impacted our wonderful stay.

50th Wedding Anniversary Gathering

  • 5 of 5

The most important comment that we can make is that the chateau was everything we had hoped it would be, and more.

A year and a half ago, when we began the planning process with our four children and families, daughter Liz, who lives just a few kilometers from La Loubiere, put us in contact with Deb and Alec, and reservations were made for La Grange and Sebastian's.

The common area in La Grange is awesome. The kitchen is large and well equipped, and the dishwasher was in constant use. The 17 of us were comfortably seated at meal time, enhancing our sense of togetherness. The three large sofas accommodated watching the Olympics, or just visiting.

The bedrooms are very comfortable and well appointed; we chose the en suite that gave us access to a charming deck and view. Everyone was happy with their sleeping arrangements.

The pool was heavily used throughout the week for swimming, sunbathing, and general fun, as was the tennis court. Many of us enjoyed early morning walks in this picturesque setting.

Alec and Deb are gracious and accommodating hosts, and although no facility problems arose, we knew they were available just in case.
